NEW YORK (AP) – Jimmy Heath, aGrammy-nominated jazz saxophonistand composer who performed withsuch greats as Miles Davis and JohnColtrane before forming the popularfamily group the Heath Brothers inmiddle age, has died. He was 93.

Heath's grandson Fa Mtume told TheNew York Times that he died Sundayat his home in Loganville, Ga. Thecause of death was not immediatelygiven.

Heath, a native of Philadelphia, hadbeen playing jazz since the 1940s, inthe early days of bebop. He was men-tored by Dizzy Gillespie, idolizedCharlie Parker, whose nickname was“Bird,” and would become known as“Little Bird” for how well he emulatedParker's fluid style.

Heath overcame his battles withheroin addiction, which landed him inprison in the mid-1950s, and had a

long and productive career. He wrotemost of the material for the ChetBaker-Art Pepper album “Playboys,”recorded with everyone from Davisand Coltrane to Milt Jackson and GilEvans, worked on charts for RayCharles, and released several of hisown albums.

In the 1970s, he helped found theHeath Brothers, which also featuredbrothers Percy Heath on bass and Al-bert “Tootie” Heath on drums. Theiralbums included “Marchin’ On” andthe Grammy-nominated “Live at thePublic Theater.” In 1993, he receiveda Grammy nomination for his own“Little Man, Big Band” album (Heathstood just 5 feet, 3 inches) and playedin a jazz concert at the White House,when President Bill Clinton himselfborrowed his saxophone for one num-ber.

In 2003, he was named a Jazz Master

by the National Endowment for theArts, which noted that “By combininghis versatile style of performing andhis outstanding writing and arrangingabilities, he has set a high standard ofaccomplishment in the jazz field.”

Survivors include Tootie Heath; hissecond wife, Mona; and a child from

each of his marriages. His son from hisfirst marriage, James Mtume, becamea Grammy-winning musician andsongwriter who helped write theStephanie Mills hit “Never KnewLove Like This Before.” Another son,Jeffrey, died in 2010. Percy Heath diedin 2005.
