The Jamshedpur Engineering and machine Manufacturing company (A
division of Indian steel and Wire Products Ltd., a subsidiary of TATA
Steel). Is a pioneer rolls manufactures in Indian subcontinent in Cast
Iron and Cast steel quality. JEMCO is also making rolls for non-

JEMCO origin dates back to 1936 when the company entered the field
of Heavy Engineering casting under the stewarding of late Sardar
Bahadur Sir Inder Singh.
As the outbreak of world war II, 1939, the company diversified into
manufacture of rolls for the first time in India. With technical
collaboration from Belgium, JEMCO turned out its first finished roll in
1940.
JEMCO’s pioneering roll manufacture played a pivotal role in supporting
and sitting up numerous steel based industries and rolling mills, there
by, helping to spearhead India’s growing technological self- reliance.
In the year 1990 JEMCO got merged with IS & WP ltd and became its
division. In December 2003, IS & WP was taken over by TATA STEEL
having control over approx 92% of the share holding, JEMCO alo
became a subsidiary of TATA STEEL and continued to upgrade and
perform in its manufacturing domain, sustain with its agility and
innovative capabilities accepting the global challenges. After take over
by TATA STEEL, JEMCO reentered the business of Engineering casting.
The company’s plant, located at Jamshedpur, is nearly 5 km from Tata
nagar railway station and is spread over on an area of 97 acres, it is
equipped with suitable melting furnaces, modern foundry,
sophisticated machine shop and a well equipped laboratory having all
up to date testing facilities. The plant at present has an installed
capacity of 4500 Mt for rolls and 1000 Mt for Engineering Casting.
Accredited with “ISO 9001 ; 2000 certification”, JEMCO is continuously

Machine Manufacturing Co. Ltd started operations in the year 1921 as

The two Are furnaces of 10 MT and 5 MT are used to manufacture high
strength alloy iron, high quality. SG Iron and alloy steel rolls.
The 8 Mt main frequency coreless induction furnace is used for small
and medium size cast iron, steel and SG rolls. It also used for
manufacture various grades of engineering casting.
The dual track induction furnace of 0.750 Mt and 1.5 Mt is for high
alloyed steel metal static as well as spun cast rolls.
The wide variety of furnace offer full flexibility in production of rolls and
engineering casting of different sizes and weights.
Melting is carried out using segregated scrap, pig iron and Ferro alloy
and Analytical laboratory equipped with computerized emission
spectrometer backs the important element of the melt to achieve the
desired composition.
Research and development
A well equipped research and development laboratory provides the
facility for continuous research on development work is basically
conducted at the laboratory, with high resolution microscope with
image analyzer, Mechanical testing machine and different types of
hardness testing Equipments and Spectrometer, a chemical laboratory,
along with Ultrasonic and DP testing facilities. In addition, JEMCO has
access to outside research laboratory for special investigation,
wherever required.
Heat treatment :
The final properties of a roll and casting depend on the heat treatment.
Which in turn, provide the appropriate strength to it, to perform in the
application area. The rolls treatment furnaces, uniformity of the
furnance is ensured by special temperature controllers and the rate of
heating can be controlled to as well as 2.9c to 100 er hour depending
on product characterstics, leading to enhancement of internal
properties of the rolls and engineering casting. Heat treatment
programe depending on product quality as well as high temperature
cycle for tempering and stress relieving aswell as high temperature
cycle for soft annealing and air quenching, special quenching facility
helps in manufacturing of had field steel casting.
Foundry :-
JEMCO has well equipped modern foundry with facilities to enter needs
of rolls and engineering casting.
Casting :
There are modern facilities for preparation of moulds and cores to
product rolls and engineering casting with maximum yield. All rolls and
engimneering casting are either bottom, middle or top poured with
specified ingates/ runners/ copes to achieve desired quality
requirement.
All modular irons rolls and casting are poured with special ladle
inoculation after Mg. treatment to ensure high strength requirements.
Special process is used for all steel and steel based rolls and casting to
ensure internal soundness, appropriate grain size and structure for
making the products absolutely.
Depicted, developed, specified process and methods have been
institutionalized for achieving the quality requirements of products of
various grades. Synchronization between all activities and sub process
are maintained to build desired properties in products.
Quality Assurance :
The entire operations from selection of raw materials to dispatch of
finished products go through a series of quality control checks
conducted by a team of metallurgists. The computer controlled
emission spectrometer analysis the bath samples of the hot metal to
ensure current chemistry of both the final products. The products are
tested for surface hardness by the conventional hardness testing
equipment along with sample checks; in the laboratory to confirm to
specification defined by the customers. The metallographic and
mechanical tests are carried out to ensure the over all internal
soundness, in particular, the quality of bound between the shell and
core. JEMCO is also equipped with instrument to measure C, SI, C
Nodulisation instantly on shop floor.

functioning at all level is striving for continual improvement for
ensuring customer delight.
Machining :
JEMCO’s machine shop is equipeed with a versatile asset of machine
tools from Japan, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Italy andIndia.
These are capable of machining rolls ranging from 20 kgs.. to 20 tones
in weight and fom 280 mm. to 1400 mm in diameter the stringent
demands of accuracies and designs are met by CNC lathes.
Special purpose machines carry out the milling operations. Specially
designed duplex milling machines are used for cutting clove leaf
wobblers, flats and done through suitably designed fixture.
Specified tolerance and desired surfaces finish are obtained through
sophisticated grinding machine.
CAD/CAM technology is available for translating the customer drawing
to internal standards as well as direct programming of the CNC laths
for finish machining.

It is structurally characteristics by nodular graphite as against flake
graphite in the normal cast iron roll. The matrix is pear litic in nature.

Charatcterstics :
The graphite steel rolls are special high Carbon steel and single poured
subject to special heat treatment and inculation. The structure consists
of carbides in a pearlitic matrix with free graphite. These roll do not
have hardness drop. They have better strength and greater resistance
to thermal cracking steel base rolls.
Application :
It is suitable for medium and heavy section mills , intermediate and
finishing stands, rail finishing mills, merchant mills intermediate stand
of bar mills.
