ROSH HASHANA The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah actually means “Head of the Year.” Just like the head controls the body, our actions on Rosh Hashanah have a tremendous impact on the rest of the year. As we read in the Rosh Hashanah prayers, each year on this day “all inhabitants of the world pass before G-d like a flock of sheep,” and it is decreed in the heavenly court “who shall live, and who shall die ... who shall be impoverished and who shall be enriched; who shall fall and who shall rise.” It is a day of prayer, a time to ask the Almighty to grant us a year of peace, prosperity and blessing. But it is also a joyous day when we proclaim G-d King of the Universe. The Kabbalists teach that the continued existence of the universe depends on G-d’s desire for a world, a desire that is renewed when we accept His kingship anew each year on Rosh Hashanah.

SIMCHAT TORAH Following the seven joyous days of Sukkot, we come to the happy holiday of Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah. In the diaspora, the first day is known by its biblical name, Shemini Atzeret. We still dwell in the sukkah, but without a blessing. Yizkor, the memorial for the departed, is also said on this day. The second day is known as Simchat Torah, during which we complete and immediately begin the annual Torah reading cycle. This joyous milestone is marked with dancing, traditionally following seven circuits known as hakafot, as the Torah scrolls are held aloft. Both days are celebrated by nightly candle lighting, festive meals at both night and day, and desisting from work. In Israel, the entire holiday is compacted into one heady 24-hour period.

Rethink everything you know about our universe. Explore the nature of our world and the meaning of the human condition as you contemplate existential questions about consciousness, the physical, and the metaphysical, to unveil the hidden unity and pervading truth of our existence.
Six of the biggest debates that rocked the Jewish world, including: sectarians and their opposition to rabbinic Judaism; whether Judaism can survive without a land; how to balance faith and reason; the Chassidic movement and its opponents; and whether Judaism is better served as a private enterprise, or through proud, public display.
In the era of social media, the value of healthy communication among family, members, and associates is widely appreciated, even as its form now undergoes a drastic shift. How do we find suitable paths for effective communication? This course explores Jewish insights into forging positive, effective, and fruitful interactions.

CHANUKAH The kindling of the Menorah is the focal point of the Chanukah holiday, symbolizing religious freedom and the strength of the Jewish spirit. The menorah is kindled on each of the eight nights of Chanukah, this year beginning at the conclusion of Shabbat on Tuesday, December 12th. The Menorah is placed at the left side of a central doorway of the home, or at the front window. The candles should be lit immediately following sunset, and should be prepared so that they will remain lit for at least a half hour after dusk. In keeping with Shabbat observance, the Menorah is lit before the Shabbat candles on Friday evening and after the Havdalah ceremony at the end of Shabbat. Gather all family members and light the Shamash, the service candle. Recite the properblessings and then light the candles beginning from the left. Then place the Shamash at itsdesignated place, separated from the other candles.

AARON & CHERIE SILBERMANTell us a little about yourself?Aaron was born in Charlotte, but grew up in Tampa and Cherie was born and raised in Inverness, Florida. Cherie and Aaron both attended the University of Florida and met at the University of Miami School of Law. Cherie and Aaron have two beautiful daughters, Ella and Hannah. Aaron owns his own law firm and he focuses his practice on the representation of condominiums and homeowner’s association. Cherie practices employment law representing employers in all areas of labor and employment law.
How were you first introduced to Chabad?I was introduced to Rabbi Mendy through mutual friends and participated in an all night Shavuot study session with Rabbi Mendy. During this marathon study session, I realized that Rabbi Mendy and Dina were quite special and had so much to offer our community.
What do you like most about Chabad?Over the years, I have had many interesting intellectual conversations with Rabbi Mendy which have sparked contemplative thought and enhanced my Jewish identity. I feel lucky to have developed a close friendship with Rabbi Mendy through these experiences. Our community as a whole is so very fortunate to have Rabbi Mendy and Dina. They work hard so to inspire others and enhance Jewish life.
What’s your favorite item from Dina’s Kitchen?Everything she makes is amazing, but we love Dina’s Challah and it is truly a treat whenever we are able to enjoy one on Shabbat.
Tell us about your most meaningful experience with Rabbi Mendy & Dina?Last year, we attended Chai Family Academy with our daughters. It was clear that Rabbi Mendy and Dina put so much thought and passion into each monthly session. Chai Family Academy sparked our daughters’ love for Jewish learning and we look forward to attending Chai Family Academy as a family for years to come.

MARK & RONIT ELKINTell us a little about your background….Mark - I was born in New York and Ronit in New Jersey but we both grew up in Ft Lauderdale. We both moved to Tampa to go to USF, although we didn't meet until after college since I was 6 years ahead of her. We are a J-Date success story! We fell in love, married, and now have 2 fun and loving children together Jacob (5) and Kylie (2 1/2). What was your first experience with Chabad?Ronit - My first experience with Chabad at Wiregrass was the Chanukah Street Festival at the Shops at Wire-grass. Subsequently Rabbi & Chanie invited us to their home for a Shabbat dinner where Mark met them and their family for the first time.
What do you like the most about Chabad?Mark & Ronit - We love that Chabad is "come as you are," and there is no judgment or ideal that we have to live up to. We want our temple to feel welcoming and supportive, and we've found that here.
What’s you favorite Chabad event? Why?Mark & Ronit - Simchat Torah is our favorite holiday event. It's a big celebration and complete fun with every-one dancing and singing together.
What’s your favorite Jewish food?Mark & Ronit - Chulent is always tasty ... even our kids love & enjoy it at kiddush after Shabbat services each week.
Can you share with us an important Jewish story/moment in your life?Mark - For me, it would be our most recent Passover Seder which we celebrated at our home along with Ronit's parents, and I led the Seder for the first time. The Seder has always been a time for my family to be together & each year as we said prayers, sang songs, and retold the story of Passover I always felt a strong connection to our history and tradition, so it was really special to have family at our home and lead the Seder. Ronit - Rosh Hashanah each year is very important to me, the traditions and family get together just make it so special!

HERZL ZOOCKTell us a little about yourself?I am one of three boys... One older and one younger. We grew up in Cherry Hill NJ.While I have not always been observant.. I have taken to heart the "wandering Jew". I lived in NJ, Fl back to NJ over to CA back to NJ and now in Tampa. I think this is where my tent will stay... At least for a while. I was married for 9 years and am now divorced. Working on changing that. (If you have any ideas - talk to Sulha! ) By trade I am an electrical engineer automating machinery. If you eat cheerios.. most likely they were made from one of our machines. My interests vary from being a Volun-teer Fireman, Volunteer EMT to private plane pilot to scuba diving and my most current ... Shooting. I am working on getting my NRA instructor LIcense. I believe all Jews should know how to shoot and am working on accomplishing this.
How were you first introduced to Chabad?I showed up ! Actually I showed up for a torah class and somehow showed up on the wrong day. (ok, so we know it wasn't "somehow"). Sulha was actually doing work on one of the school classrooms and I asked if I could lend a hand. (as long as i was there. why not do something!). She said yes. I also showed up the next day and helped more. Somehow I ended up talking with Mendy and the journey began.
What do you like most about Chabad? What do I like most..... I don't know if it is a matter of what I like as much as how has it affected me. I was a secular jew, non observant, strong in belief of Israel that day I met Sulha. From there, there has been a transformation in how I look at life, how I live mine. I think now I believe in this greater entity and an ultimate purpose in life. I can take that down to the daily ups and downs of my day and find a strength to endure the challenges and a joy to celebrate life. No, not always easy - but at least I know I am not alone. I lost both of my parents early to cancer - I had the usual "why do bad things happen to good people.... really good people". By learning Torah, Chassidus and being mentored by the Rabbis of Chabad - I have my answer.... At least for my parents. This has brought me great comfort. What do I like about Chabad.... If you show up... They are there for you in so many ways!
What’s your favorite food at Rabbis house ?Brisket baby !!!! Brisket !!!
Tell us about your most meaningful experience with Rabbi Yossie and Sulha !My most meaningful.... ok.. it is when they said Hello. I didn't know at the time what a simple Hello could do. This simple Hello opened a door to a journey - one that I wasn't even looking for. Now I can look back and say - "this was that Fork in the Road moment" - and I took it. Simply because they said Hello! Those of you that have been around for the last 7 years, you have seen the transformation externally for sure, and hopefully my personality and interaction have transformed as well. I have a long way to go, much to learn. They said Hello...
