• The Outgate Labourer completes majority of work duties on one of three lanes at the outgate
and occasionally at the overpass.
• As the work is completed primarily out of doors, the worker is exposed to natural light, outdoor
lighting, and the elements (e.g., rain, wind, direct sunlight, and occasionally snow). Work
temperature is affected by the weather.
• The worker encounters even terrain, slippery surfaces, stairs, mobile stairs, and overpass.
• Worker works within proximity of moving vehicle traffic (e.g., trucks).
• When infrequent incoming traffic is encountered, the Outgate Labourer has access to a
sheltered sitting station.
Environmental/ Psychosocial Factors:
Description of Essential Job Duties:
1. Completing check-in procedures for all incoming traffic through the terminal outgate.
Frequency:
• The Outgate Labourer completes check-in procedures continuously over the course of a work
shift.
• The check-in procedure takes approximately 6 minutes per truck.
• There is one Outgate Labourer per shift.
Equipment:
• The Outgate Labourer uses the following equipment and supplies:
• Scraper weighing 0.25 kg and with a length of 45 cm
• Chalk
• Radio
• Pipe wrench weighing 2 kg
• Mobile stairs
• Shovel weighing 1.5 kg
• Long handle shovel/broom weighing 3 to 4 kg and with a length of 262 cm
• Personal Protective Equipment, which includes:
• Steel toe boots
• High visibility vest
• Gloves for protection from various weather conditions.

Description:
Essential Job Demands:
The Outgate Labourer is responsible for check-in procedures for incoming traffic at the outgate. There
are three lanes at the outgate (e.g., lane 1 for full and sealed containers and lane 2 and 3 for empty
containers). Sealed containers are not inspected. Empty containers are opened and visually inspected
for holes or damages. If a container is damaged, a short note is written on the container with chalk and
the checker is contacted via radio transmission. The truck driver is then asked to drive to the “trouble
gate” for further inspection. For undamaged empty containers, the Outgate Labourer removes placards
from the exterior using a scraper and/or mobile stairs as required. The Outgate Labourer is restricted
from climbing on the truck during inspection or placard removal. The top of the containers are
inspected at an overpass accessed by a stairway. As required, a long handle broom or shovel is used to
clean the top of containers. Each inspection takes approximately 6 minutes. In times of snow, the
worker would maintain clear access to the outgate lanes through shoveling or use of ice salt. When
there is infrequent incoming traffic, the Outgate Labourer has access to a sheltered sitting station.
Physical and Postural Demands:
Description:
• Lifting up to 4 kgbetween floor and shoulder level on a frequent basis.
• Lifting to above shoulder level is occasionally encountered.
• Lifting is interspersed with carrying.
• Repetitive lifting is rarely encountered when shovelling ice salt and weight of such load is
controlled by the worker.
• Unilateral carrying on a frequent basis.
• Carrying concurrently with stair climbing is encountered.
• Carrying while ambulating on even terrains with occasional slippery section is encountered.

• Frequent stairs climbing over the course of a work shift.
• Force application concurrently with intermittent dynamic spinal movement is encountered when
removing select placards on the side of containers while weight bearing on stairs.
• Working in proximity to moving vehicle traffic.
• Throughout a work shift, it is recommended that the Outgate Labourer periodically completes
stretches, especially when shoveling is required during the work shift.
• Avoid ambulation or climbing at an increased pace in order to maintain equilibrium.

Considerations for return to work programming:
• Worker needs to demonstrate the ability to ascend and descend stairs prior to return to the full
scope of this work position.
• Initial return to work attempts as an extra worker to allow for extra breaks and to work at the
worker’s pace concurrently with a graduated return to work should be considered.
