SITE FROM SIGNS
My site analysis started rom the understanding o the signs surrounding our sites. Te signs in-dicated different traffic flows around the area and connect the site into urban context. Very interestingis that there are waterwat or bo ates, highway or cars, bike route and store signs that indicate the pe-destrian to the community. Te bike route on Gano St. is a part o national bike route which goes romFlorida all the way to Canada.
Te variety o the traffic system also split our site into pieces. Te relation o the Gano St. to See-konk River was split by the existing o the highway ramp; Te connection o Gano Park and India PointPark were split by the highway. Also the site was dominated by the pond and plants, which blockedthe relationship o the community residents and the water. Tese are the issues I intended to solve andlooked at in the ollowing design process.

STITCHING
From the site analysis conducted, I introduced the idea o “Stitching” intothe site. o stitch the site means to repair the relationship o land to the water.Te overlapping characteristic o the stitching and the idea o interconnectingtwo different site o the obstacle lead me to the idea o bringing the water into thestreet and also bringing the street out to the water.

THROUGH THE BARRIER
Te first proposal ollowed the idea o stitching, that I create twotunnels that pass underneath the highway ramp. Te hill under theramp was taken out in order to open the view to the water at GanoStreet. Also the extention o the building rom the street to the wateralso corresponded to the idea o brining the land out to the water.

PROGRAM THROUGH SPACE
Te second proposal o the boat house is to identiy the axis o the proj-ect, that is the extention o Wickenden Street in to the river. Te programswere entered via this new “Main Street” so to provided a single entry and aconnection or the pedestrian and the bikes between India Point Park andGano Park.

CIRCULATION AND ANGLE
In the third Proposal the bike lane and pedestrian lanewere separated in to different height due to different speed othe traffic. Now the traffic on three levels are orming 45 de-ree angle to each other. Te programs were attached to thesethree traffic flows so to provide different view angle to the vis-itor within the program. Te vertical connection between the
levels lied in the intersection o the floors.

SYSTEM OF STRUCTURE
In the ourth and final proposal a unified system was established bythe direction o each traffic flow. Te walls ollowed the direction othe traffic system, which was 45 degree different rom the one above.Te community center in this proposal was cast in the heart o thebuilding, so that all the other programs were connected throught thecommunity center..

ENVIRONMENT
Te site afer I carved out the hill was again recreated ollowedthe idea rom the stitching. Te direction o the land ollowed thedirection o the base stucture and to create the linear and variousramp into the water. Te programs were gather tightly at the centero all the circulations so t he views at Gano St. remained open to thepublic. Te connection o two parks was reached by the setting othe bike lane., and te connection o the Street and the water is reachby the extention o Wickenden Street to the deck.

CHOREOGRAPHY
he changing o the geometry o a single sheet o paper yields multiple
choreography when dropping rom a certain height. he relationship between
the geometry and choreography are deined and established through a series o
experiments.
In this project I developed sets based on the geometry o a double paper
rings structure, especially ocused on the relation between the joint angle and
the spinning choreography. As the angle started to increase, the rings started the
twisting lying instead o spinning. his relationship was urther deined in the
next stage.

depicted in dierent number o lines: 1 line, 10 lines, and 1000 lines.
he representations in dierent number o lines show dierent critical
moment o the shuttle dropping. In the case o the ininite shuttle. We
can see a clear spine and the knots where the shuttle spins and rotate.

DIGITAL FABRICATION
he materialization o the digital drawing helps bring the orm o
the shuttle choreography into the real world, also to urther connect
the concept o ininite shuttle with the real construction world. he
next step is to bring the material abrication onto the real architectural
site.

SITE
he site or the realization o the ininite tower locates at Roger
William Park, Providence. he natural topography o the site is a steep
slope and the isolation o the urban construction and plantations. he
irst maniesto o interacting with this site is to build a tower based on the
natural geography which could provide the best view to the shuttle, and
also the best view to the city.
PERSPECTIVE
In order to create the interaction between the shuttle and the original
landscape o the park (Hill, City, Roger William Statue). he dropping
point was set at a highest point. hen the dropping direction is heading
toward the statue o Roger William. he viewer's circulation was set to
provide dierent view o the shuttle, rom top, bottom, and aside. he
tower is also shited rom the axis o the park in order not to destroy the
original view and ceremony atmosphere o the memorial park. he back
side o the tower also aced the city o Providence.

PROTOTYLE AND FORM
Starting rom two ininite shape on top and bottom, the inal orm
o this shuttle tower is urther being iterated based on the site and the
program o the building. From the shuttle dropping tower, the unction
o the building is expanded to a museum and actory o the shuttle maker,
along with shuttle maker's private dwelling and studio.

READING OF AN ARCHITECUTRE
he reading o an architecture starts rom the drawing o the details. hrough
the line weight and study o the detail the essence o the structure, space, atmosphere
jump out rom the paper.
oyo Ito's Sendai Mediatheque were characterized by its giant columns that
connect the loors. he conventional "Column" were expanded to the size that could
contain programs. 13 columns that go rom the second basement to the rootop create
this vertical spaces or the circulation and air to run through the building. hese
columns are my ocus o the project.
24
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
27/56
SILHOUETTE
he silhouette o the building clariy the signiicance attitude the analyzer takes
towards the building. In this set o silhouette the columns were mainly ocused.
he columns were treated as a space, a solid, a structural set along with dierent
representation method approach on the silhouette.
25
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
28/56
COMPLEXITY
Starting rom the columns, the inormation o the wall, the loor, the acade......
were gathered in the new drawing. Clearly we can see this complex and well-designed
building growing out rom these 13 shited and twisted columns.
26
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
29/56
ELEMENTS
he explosion o the digital drawing shows every little detail o the building,
and new interesting discovery o the building starts to emerge. Upon separating
the structure and the skin, we can see that the honeycomb structure o the loors is
actually related to the column structure, and this is the element I'm going to take on to
the next stage. (o be continued, the project is expected to be ini shed at May 2016)
27
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
30/56
STRUCTURE
Te making o the columns and honeycomb floor struc-ture by using the same material deepened this idea o treatingthe whole structure as one system. We can say the columnsare growing out rom the honeycomb structures, as well ashoneycomb structures growing out rom the columns. Techange o either one element could lead to the change o theother.
28
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
31/56
HONEYCOMB
Te pupose o the honeycomb structure is to transorm the circleo the column structure into the grid floor structure. Te circle wasfirst offset and then by the triangulated connection to the closestgrids. Te operations were all conducted in grasshopper scripts.
29

HONEYCOMB-COLUMN
Second element I introduced in the analy-sis was the columns. Te rotating and the size othe column will lead to the change on the hon-eycomb structure., as well as the number o the vertical connections.
30
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
33/56
HONEYCOMB-COLUMN-STAIRS
Te third and the final element o the analysis was the stairs, which was the program with in the columns. Te change o either inhoneycomb structures or the column structure would lead to the ac-commodation o the stairs within. Te constancy o the stairs was theratio between height and distance, which provided a b ase or makingthe turn. Te final presentation was an animation that combined allo the 3 elements that related to each other.

ISSUE: 30 M2 FOR A LOWER CLASS FAMILY IN TAIWAN
he rising number o the lower class amily by the unair wealth distribution has become a problem
in the city o aiwan. hey struggle to survive in the low pay rate but hight housing price, yet live in
the terrible condition. his small-size public housing o 30 square-meter is dedicated to these amilies,
so the housing price could be aordable. Also the living quiality and uctions could be kept at a
high standard. My target type o amily is consist o with 3 people, which corresponds to the normal
aiwanese core amily with only child or single-parent with one to two children.

THE RISING OASIS
One o my personal proposal to this project
he modern type o living has cause the human to stay urther rom the
nature, and by the higher density o housing arrangement we are urther
away rom the ground. In this proposal I am seeking a way to keep a little
place o nature in each living unit, an oasis. By the rotating o every single
loor, we provide each unit an outdoor space with the direct exposure to
the sunlight, a perect space or a high loor gardening or small arming.
38
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
41/56
he high-rise housing is developed or the high-desity poplation in the urban
area. he spaces are compiling vertically or the highest eiciency o land
usage. However this leads to the sacriicing o the living quality and the close
interpersonal relations. In this case we are seeking the the high quality o living
including amily, community, urban space, and environment in the interaction
with high-rise housing.
hrough this competition in base YH o Fu-Du Building Co., LD, we hope to
propose the "Villa-Mansion" or a better development pattern or the urban area.
We believe the communication and sharing
are built on the base o the sense o saety. So
we built separate the building into two. he
courtyards on the same level are acing each
other to yield visual communication, but
remain the privacy o each individual group o
residency.
he apartments are comprised by the shapeo L. Each unit has two loors (2/3 + 1/3), so
to provide individual entrance or the elevator
space, private stairs, and high-rise ceiling.
We are thinking to create more public-beneicial space, however to remain the saety
o the residents. We suggested to rise the
resident entrance rom the ground level, to
yield the original space or the public activities,
or example, City Gallery. he releasing o the
public space can also be a good grounding or a
better loor area ratio preerence, which its the
proit o the developer.
In this base in ainan, aiwan, the high-rise housing ace direct wind and sunshine due
to the lower-rise housing in surrounding area.
By the installing o the ilter skin these weather
condition are avoided. Also the urther material
properties could enhance the interaction with
the environment and the decoration o the
building.

MATERIAL DISCOVERY
It was ater one hot pot party and I let some soaked noodles
until the next day. he noodles were totally dried and reorming
as the shape o the bowl. Such a discovery that the soaking process
o noodle could be reversed and shaped dierently. I took use o
the hairdryer to speed up the drying process. However the random
curve and the ragility o dry noodle is a problem.
EXPERIMENT I : THE STRUCTURE o solve the potential ragility o the noodle, it is necessary to bind
noodles together to orm a s trong structure. Entwining is a good way
to deal with the disordered direction o dry noodles, like to braid a
pigtail. he twist o each noodle on the other helps strengthen the
structure.
he noodles are braided around the wooden box to test the
stability and the orm. he repeating circle orm did not deorm
signiicantly ater drying, also the downsize o the drying noodle
has allow the noodle to cling on the box tightly. Also the attempt to
build a higher structure above the box has raised interest in another
experiment o this material.
STABLE STRUCTURE
From the circle orm developed into the orm o the arches,
which required less materials but provide the same holding
strength, which is vital on the noodle building.
EXPERIMENT II : THE HEIGHT CHALLENGE
he height is an unknown target. A 50 centimeters tall tower
by the arches is an initial setting and to see i there's possibility
to build beyond this expectation. In addition, two out stretchingantenna on top to test the holding ability.
41
8/15/2019 Johnny YH Lin Portfolio
44/56
PROPERTIES
he antennas actual ly bent down ater arid; whereas the main
tower itsel stood still, with bending in some parts. his work
proves this seemly ragile noodle could somehow be able to be a
independent and sel-supportable structure material.
DEVELOPING THE MATERIAL
o urther develop the noodle material into a bigger work requires the solution to the bending problems. An inside support by other strong
material as iron or plastic might help. Also to reveal the transparency o the ingredient, plates that made rom noodle ingredient, green been- and
potato- starch, could bear more light. I believe the overlapping and natural curve o the material will make special shadow through the light. It has t
potential to become a good coating and structuring material.

WEAVING: SURFACE TO LINE TO BODY
his is a new way o creating a body rom surace. From a
piece o paper, the spiral line has cut the surace into line-. By
weaving the end point back in and out the layers, we can build
up a new three-dimensional unit. his process switch our general
idea o shaping rom point, line, and surace to body.
he spiral line could be seen as passage, and layers when
we open it rom the outer round to the inner round. hrough
weaving we connect the passage with layers.
Combine Units
44
o add the variation to the unit, we can add branches on the
spiral to make multi-ends, or the reverse o the spiral makes an
additional attached space to the unit. It is also possible to combine
many spirals together.

47/56
45
DEPICT THE SPACE
When we cut the line on the paper, we actually separate one
point into two points, and one line into two lines. So when we
draw out these invisible lines, as to sew it, the spatial shape is
depicted clearly. he twisting o the layers can also be shown
through coloration.
o urther observe the inner space o the unit, I cut the
space to see the cross-section, the original neat layer on layer
is now divided into several. However the passage has kept
connected, as it was in the irst place, so is the space inside theunit.
FUTURE IMAGINATION
his space o the inal weaving body seem not useul
right now, because the body and direction might not it the
custom o a traditional space: plain loors, vertical walls
and the people's movement in the space.
Nevertheless, i this space into the environment that has

workable. We can imagine now the human are lying or
swimming inside the weaving space. With the advantages
o the connecting passage we can easily go to dierent
layers o the body. his gives us a imagination o our
