The John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) offers
students three hands-on programs: Entrepreneurial
Management Institute (EMI), Iowa Innovation Associates
(IIA), and Institute for International Business (IIB). These
experiential opportunities allow students to apply what
they have learned in the classroom. Students in these

Entrepreneurial Management Institute (EMI) is a partnership between the Tippie College of Business and the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC). Students serve as consultants to Iowa business organizations and entrepreneurs. They collaborate as a team with company leaders to develop unique strategic market research, competitive analysis, and financial assessments. Students earn three semester hours of credit and gain real-world experience. The participating businesses develop mentoring relationships and identify potential new hires.
How It WorksConsulting services are provided by teams of 3-5 University of Iowa students and are guided by a faculty advisor with extensive business experience. Teams are selected based on their areas of study and personal interests. In the first weeks of the semester, teams meet with the client to determine the scope of the project.
The EMI curriculum is designed for maximum performance for the client. Regularly scheduled meetings update clients with progress reports and appraisals. The final report is presented by each team, complete with findings and recommendations.
Professionalism and confidentiality are part of the consulting process and are graded components of the class.
“We had an excellent experience with our student teams. The students have been outstanding and their market analysis report was terrific. We are still using it when analyzing our competitors.” Kamath/Cardiostrong
iowa innovation associatEs (iia)
Iowa Innovation Associates (IIA) offers UI student entrepreneurs internships with business, industrial and non-profit organizations across the state. This program is available to entrepreneurial undergraduate, graduate and MBA students attending the University of Iowa. IIA interns work in Iowa City for 10 to 20 hours per week and may participate virtually if the internship is outside Johnson County.
“Our intern has been an absolute asset to Launch Services. He is quick on his feet, hard-working, and shows great initiative. We couldn’t have asked for a better intern.” Gerald Redlinger, Launch Services
How It WorksIIA allows students to match their career interest with real-world projects. Examples of IIA assignments are: technology commercialization, product design, social media marketing, software development, project development and market research. All IIA clients must present a job description for approval. Candidate resumes are generated by the Business Liaison, who will also serve to mentor students engaged in the IIA program.
