July 7th from9:30 a.m. to 2:30
p.m.You are invited to participate in a retreat on the
Spirituality of Wine to be held from at the Chateau
Tebeau Winery, 525 State Route 635, Helena Ohio. The
winery is easy to find. Route 635 is off of Route 6. It's
one mile east of Helena and 5 miles west of Route 53 in
Fremont).
We will gather, and begin the day with a meditation on
the Biblical passages involving wine. Bob Butcher and
the members of the Spiritual Formation Team will be
leading. There will be time to wander the outdoor spaces
and stroll through the vineyard and koi pond. For thosewho desire, there will be a wine tasting prior to lunch.
The wine tasting itself costs $5.00 per person. Those
who do not wish to do not have to pay the $5.00 but will
be invited to listen and observe.
Lunch is available for your purchase. We will need pre-
reservations. Please indicate your choice of meal from
the menu on flyer on the Kiosk when you register.
Registrations may be made by emailing bking@
maumeevp.org before July 6th. You will pay for your
lunch on the day of the retreat.
We will have a spacious room to ourselves, plus verynice outside spaces where we could have small groups
or private reflection. We can stroll through the vineyard
and around the koi pond. A big heavy door will separate
the retreat participants from the restaurant.

Christmas in July for FirelandsPreschool!
One of our closest and dearest Mission ministries is our
own Firelands Preschool. As they celebrate Christmas in
July we would like to gift them with some new play
and craft items as well as new toys for their playground.
Preschool Director, Rachel Johnson, and the kids have
come up with a wish list of preschool age items which
can be purchased and brought into the gathering area
during the month of July. Look for a box in Fellowship
Hall to place your gifts.
The Mission Committee will also be using Mission monies
to purchase an outdoor climber, wading pool, and a
preschool mini-trampoline with bar for the Firelands
Preschool.
Their Wish List includes:
any Paw Patrol toys
a toy vacuum
new dress-up clothes
sand toys and trucks
playground balls
some new craft materials, such as crazy
scissors, fun markers, and stamps for crafts
Preschool NewsJune has been a very
exciting month in
Preschool, Not only
have we been busy
playing outside and
reviewing skills we
learned all school
year, we learned
about Camping, Outer
space, Our Dads,
Summer, and TheUSA!
During camping week,
we set up a tent,
roasted pretend
smores' over a "fire",
and talked about all
the things we would
need to go camping. The kids enjoyed playing and
relaxing in the tent throughout the day!
Outer space week was out of this world!! We read
books, sang songs and leaned about the sun, moon,
stars, and planets. The kids had so much fun creating
different parts of the solar system during craft time. Wemade shooting stars, marble painting planets, 3D
aluminum foil moons, rocket ships, and UFOs with aliens
in them.
We also spent a week talking about our Dads and
creating wonderful art work and poems for them. We
celebrated Father's Day with our Dads by having a
doughnut party complete with doughnuts, fruit, milk,
juice and coffee. The kids loved having their dads and
grandpas in their classroom with them. Thank you to all
who were able to attend!
Summer officially arrived on June 20th! We dedicated awhole week to "summery" activities! Our favorite was
playing outside in the water and eating popsicles! We
had a special visitor, Ms. Amanda from Ottawa
Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste Management, come talk
to us about taking care of our planet and the importance
of recycling. She brought along some recycled materials
to make projects with us. We really liked the story she
read to us, Michael Recycles!
We ended the month leaning about America and why we
celebrate the 4th of July. The kids loved celebrating
America's birthday with a red white and blue picnic! We
ate hot dogs, watermelon, and potato chips...all ofAmericasfavorite things!

A Very Special Vespers Indeed! On June 5th, at 5:00 in the Pavilion, Pastor Emeritus,
Rev. Bob Butcher celebrated the 50 thAnniversary of his
Ordination as a Presbyterian Minister. Friends, Firelands
Folks, and distinguished guests gathered for a light mealin the fellowship hall. Several well-wishers traveled a
long time to come help celebrate. Following the cutting
of the cake, all went out to our pavilion for a vespers
service honoring Bob. Mayor Hugh Wheeler made June 5
Bobs honorary day and gave him a key to the city. Rev.
Susan Meier, Presbyter for Common Life of the Maumee
Valley Presbytery spoke of her appreciation of Bobs
continued ministry in the Presbytery.

Pastors Page
I have heard it said that a pastors newsletter article is the most widely read or heard of all the things the minister
does. More people will read that article than will sit in on any class or hear any sermon or read anything else the
minister writes. Having said that, I will now write a word that just might drive away some of those reading this article
Stewardship!
Some people will read that article and cry, Foul! Its only July and you arent allowed to say stewardship
until October! Yes, thats the way weve learned to handle stewardship. The congregation agrees to tolerate talk
about stewardship during the fall campaign as long as the pastor, the stewardship and finance committee, and the
session agree not to talk about it the rest of the year. So for a few weeks we plead with people to pledge so that we
can keep the lights on a little while longer, and then (believe it or not) we do our best to keep quiet about it until the
next fall.
That is a horrible way of teaching about stewardship. For one thing, while it seems to work at raising a church
budget it probably works about as poorly as any way we could possibly devise. Typically such a process allows a
church to barely keep operating and nothing more. I doubt that people expect any other organizations they are
members of to raise funds in such a way. Secondly, this process has precious little to do with real stewardship. Real
stewardship is not about paying the light bill. It is vital for us to pay our light bill, and well probably keep talk ing
about the light bill, but thats not what stewardship is all about. Stewardship, - which involves how we use all of what
God has entrusted to us, not just money - is a vital spiritual issue. It does not apply only during a few weeks in the
fall. (What if we had a fall Faith Campaign and that was the only time of the year we were allowed to talk about
faith?)
Your stewardship and finance committee works very hard, asking how stewardship can be more meaningful
to FPC and to all its members. Your session has been talking about stewardship, and some of your members recently
attended a day-long stewardship seminar. All this might mean some refreshing changes on how we do things aroundhere regarding stewardship in general and financial contributions inparticular. There is no news yet, but keep
watching and waiting. You might be hearing something before too long.
This is important stuff, and not just in terms of how the church raises funds. Thats actually the least
important part of this. What is most important is how it affects and enhances our own personal walks of faith.
Fondly,
Mark
