JUNE 2019
All Saints’ Church Preston on Tees
I think, if we’re honest, we can all relate to one or more of these, at least at times. Personally, I always find it easier to pray with others than on my own and the ten days of Thy Kingdom Come give us many opportunities to do that (see the Prayer section of the Dates page). Why not commit to come to at least one? Thy Kingdom Come is, of course, a line from the Lord’s Prayer. It begins with three things that God wants from us: reverence (hallowed be your name), allegiance (your kingdom come) and obedience (your will be done). And it goes on to ask for three things we need from God: food (give us today our daily bread), restoration (forgive us our sins) and protection (deliver us from evil). Pray it every day, and pray it from the heart.
John Lambert
It is said that Mary Queen of Scots once admitted to a confidante, “I fear John Knox’s prayers more than an army of ten thousand men.” Whether she actually ever did say that we shall never know, but if she did, she had reason to tremble. And yet, though we may nod approvingly when people speak of the power of prayer, I suspect most of us think we spend less time on our knees than we ought to. Having listened to dozens of people talk to me honestly about prayer in my time as a church leader I can list five reasons why this might be so. Putting it really bluntly, it boils down to this: 1) Because I struggle to focus, so I feel guilty and then I give up. 2) Because I don’t know how much I am loved by God so I tend to avoid others - including God. 3) Because I don’t know in my heart that Jesus accomplished everything at the
cross and I therefore have free access to the throne of grace where God is waiting to meet with me. 4) Because I am to all intents and purposes the lord of my life. What’s the point of prayer? I am awesome. I can manage just fine on my own. 5) Because the Great Commission is not all that important to me. Life, for me, is more about daily comforts than the evangelization of the nations.

All Saints’ PCC 2019-20 Praying always and serving together
to share Jesus’ love with our communities.
Your PCC members
The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is All Saints’ main decision-making
body. Anyone on the electoral roll can stand for election to the PCC
and the term of office is one year (renewable).
Chosen by church members every April at the annual meeting, the
PCC meets ten times a year, usually on the third Monday evening of
the month in the Meeting Room. These meetings are open and
transparent; anyone can attend.
The PCC has prayerful oversight over the church’s mission, ministry
and organisation, it is the employer of church staff and it carries the
responsibility for setting policy and monitoring church finances.
Minutes of each meeting, once appproved, are posted on a notice
board in the Centre and on the All Saints’ church website.

Soul Survivor Whenever you spend any time with our young people it’s not long before Soul Survivor comes up in the conversation – they are always either talking about something incredible that happened last Summer or looking forward to next Summer! Soul Survivor is a huge camp that brings thousands of young people together to meet with God. He really has used our time there to draw us all closer as a youth group and deeper in relationship with Him. It is hard to put into words just how special it is, but some of our young people have done a great job below. These are their thoughts:
I was praying for the Holy Spirit to come to
me and give me freedom. Then a few
minutes later I started to laugh and cry. It
was unusual but life-changing and since then
I have felt closer to God and have grown
deeper in my faith. Jessica Goodwin
I loved how Mike Pilavachi individually picked
out people that God told him needed prayer.
They were prayed for and healed.
Hannah Wiseman
It was very emotional and I felt extremely close
to God. The song Reckless Love really spoke to
me. Eliya Trevorrow
I love standing with
thousands of other
Christians when no one is
ashamed of their faith and
we all worship together
without caring about what
other people think of you.
At Soul Survivor last year, I had the best
experience of my life. Mike and his speeches
made me stronger in my faith. Before I went,
I was scared because I thought I would be
lonely, but I met some of my very best
friends who have helped me through my
faith. Kiera
The best thing about Soul Survivor is the
worship and communion. It has also
helped us to connect and get along with
our church family. Shemiya Trevorrow
My highlight was
worship in the main
meetings. Dan Taylor
I love playing games as a youth group
before the meetings in the main venue.
Also, before each main meeting they do
‘Bongo cam’, which is where a set of
bongo drums appear on the huge screen
and loud music comes on. They then film
people around the venue and if the
camera is on you, you have to dance and
pretend to play the bongos! I also loved
the worship. Esme Howard I enjoyed worshiping God
and growing deeper in my
faith. I enjoyed praying for
people and being prayed for,
and listening to what God
wanted to say to people.

Connect Lunch Club is for older people from our local area. Our aim is to combat loneliness by connecting people to one another. New friendships are made, experiences are shared, the bereaved are supported and the lonely feel less isolated.
Lunch Club happens every second Tuesday in the month with more than 70 people attending. We have been blessed with a team of dedicated people who deliver a two-course lunch, which is followed by entertainment. This has included music groups, quizzes, slide shows and local children to sing carols at Christmas. We organise a trip during the Summer and have visited Ormesby Hall, Kirkleatham Museum and Owl Centre and Raby Castle. This year, we are going to Kiplin Hall and Gardens. Everyone looks forward to these visits.
Prior to the lunch we have a short worship service in church for those who wish to attend. God has really blessed this service with numbers growing from six to 50 at present.
For some, this is their only visit to church and many, who perhaps would otherwise not attend a church, now regard All Saints’ as their church.
We also host a weekly seated exercise class run by an experienced tutor. This helps to keep joints (and also the laughter muscles) supple! At the end of the class there is a short Christian ‘thought for the day’ which is followed by tea and a chat.
Here are some comments from our guests: ‘Always a friendly atmosphere’, ‘Everyone makes you feel so welcome’, ‘Lunch Club is the highlight of my month.’
God continues to bless this ministry and also those of us on the team who serve. It is a real privilege to show God’s love through the Connect ministry.
