The Piedmont Fox Hounds Hunter Trials will be held on Sunday, September 28 at 8:00A.M. at the Salem Farm Show Grounds in Upperville, Va. Show off your field hunter,show hunter or eventer! Classes over fences will feature 10-12 obstacles on an outsidegrass course simulating natural hunting country. You needn't be a member of a foxhunt to compete, but if you are, your hunt could win the Hunt Challenge Trophy. Thefeature class of the day will be the Piedmont Fox Hounds Field Hunter Derby.Champion& Reserve will be awarded in the following divisions: Children's, Junior, Low, AdultAmateur, Open Hunters & Hilltoppers. Itis optimistic and cheerful.
Cheerful was one of many reasons Catie and Billy of Kesmont Farmselected the Color Yellow for their new paddock fences. The black fencesand barns looked old and sad. There was much TLC to be done. Thecolor Yellow will provide safer fences and a cooler barn when ProjectPaint is complete. The perfect shade came when the first trial was toodark, the second was too light and the third time…a charm and just right!
Catie and Billy made Keswick their new home moving from Nantucket; Sea Pony Farm, 21 Crooked Lane recently featured in theNew York Times “Great Homes” with a List Price just under $10 million. (You’ll want to take a look as it showcases Billy’s talentfor residential and barn design and construction.)
While at Sea Pony Farm, Catie ran a therapeuticriding program with 4 Icelandic Ponies and anArab for good measure. She also collected somealpacas and donkeys to round out the program.After many years, the Ponies had earned theirretirement and after looking up/down the EastCoast between Canada and Virginia, they foundthe beautiful Land and Mountain Views ofKeswick would be their new Home.
Although Keswick is rich in history and tradition,there can be no better place to nurture yourcreativity, think outside the box and try anunconventional color scheme!

Nancy Parsons is doing that. After a verysuccessful career in development and non-profit management, she is opening Nancy
Parsons Art and Antiques. Beginning with one boothspace at the Ruckersville Gallery, on 29 north next tothe Blue Ridge Cafe, she now has seven filled spacesand the promise of more to come. It has just clicked.She loves scouring estate sales and auctions for itemsthat “speak to her”. Her clients have been delightedwith the selection of items for purchase and she getstremendous satisfaction seeing them go to a new home.
So what has she has been doing for the last 25 years?She is a graduate of Mary Baldwin College and a nativeof Lynchburg, Virginia. In 1994 Nancy moved toKeswick. Even though her career has made it necessaryfor her to move to other places such as Middleburgand Richmond, she always kept property in Keswickand always felt that Keswick was home.
While her career has been in non-profit management anddevelopment, many of theinstitutions she represented havebeen related to the arts and historicpreservation, reflecting herunderlying interests. Nancy hasheld senior level positions at theUniversity of Virginia. Shecoordinated the University’sregional campaigns in Chicago andNew York and ran the major giftsoffice at the Darden School. Shemanaged the campaigns for the artsand preservation of the University’shistoric buildings and grounds.
How many of us heard a parent say “ You’ll never earna living doing that!” I began to think its funny how wesometimes don’t pay attention to the deeper longingwe have and that no matter how we ignore it nevergoes away. In fact it can sneak in through the back doorof our lives and we find ourselves doing somethingand wondering how did I get here?
In Steven Pressman’s book The War of Art , he addressesths incredible idea of “resistance” to doing our specificpassion in life. “ Resistance is a repelling force. It’snegative. Its aim is to shove us away, distract us,prevent us from doing our work”. He also says “ Achild has no trouble believing the unbelievable, nordoes the genius or the madman. It’s only you and I,with our big brains and our tiny hearts, who doubtand overthink and hesitate.”“The more important a callto action is to our soul’s evolution, the more resistancewe will feel toward pursuing it.”
Nancy said to me “I am taking risks but I have to dothis.” There it is I thought, resistance. Being scared.And she’s doing it anyway. There is the paradox in life(among many) but the one essential for realizing ourtrue potential. Each of us has a unique calling and eachof us is not special…both together!“You enter the forestat the darkest point, where there is no path. Where there is away or path, it is someone else’s path. You are not on yourown path. If you follow someone else’s way, you are not goingto realize your potential.” Joseph Campbell

Nancy also managed Monticello’s major gifts program.In 2005 she left Keswick to become President and CEO ofthe National Sporting Library in Middleburg, Virginia.Four years after that she was named Deputy Director forDevelopment at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Sheis currently Director of External Relations and SpecialAssistant to Governor Baliles at the Miller Center.
Last February, she opened her business selling art andantiques as a weekend hobby. She is leaving the MillerCenter at the end of August to focus full time on buildingher new business.

The 8th Annual Heritage Harvest Festival, hosted by the Thomas JeffersonFoundation in partnership with Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, celebratesJefferson’s legacy in a fun, affordable, family-oriented, educational event
promoting gardening, sustainability, local food, and the preservation of heritageplants.
The 2014 Heritage Harvest Festival will be held on Saturday, September 13, atMonticello: on the West Lawn, in the vegetable garden, and in the LEED-certifiedVisitor Center. The venue provides a beautiful showcase for the restored gardensand features the wealth of Monticello’s programs in not just gardening, but also naturalhistory, foodways, and the roles of the entire plantation community. On Friday,September 12, there will be additional premium programming, including the FestivalKeynote Presentation & Chef’s Harvest Dinner.
Participants will enjoy traditional tastings,workshops, hands-on demonstrations,interpretive walks, and a variety of gardentours and exhibits. Experts, including MasterGardeners, come from around the countryto share knowledge and volunteer their timeto run the festival. Local food, sustainablefarming, and a heightened interest intraditional fruits and vegetables havecaptured the imagination of gardeners andconsumers throughout the United States.

At the heart of the Heritage Harvest Festivalare educational programs on seed-saving, botanical medicine, heirloom varieties,sustainable agriculture, organic gardening, edible landscaping, regional cookery, andother aspects of sustainable living. Interpretive tours of the restored Monticello garden,plus specialty tours on natural history and native plants, will take place every hour.Monticello’s restored kitchen will come alive with cooking programs highlightingthe little mountain’s cross-cultural legacy.
The exhibits in the Tasting Tent provide a focal point for festival participants to meetfarmers, educators, and non-profits at the center of the local food movement. I regret that Mr. Vanderwarker found my article in June’sKeswick Life [“Traffic Calming for the Rt. 22/231 Corridor]so upsetting. Facts do that to some people.It is clear from
his vituperative essay that he does not like Rt. 22/231 verymuch and would like to change it to suit his personal tastes.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I guess Mr.Vanderwarker doesn’t see much beauty on our country road.Too bad, because most of us do.
So the propane tanks along the railroad are ugly.... Hey, let’sborrow an idea from the Comp Plan and plant a tree clump infront of it. Presto! Job done, at almost zero cost.
Too crowded at the Keswick Post Office? Once again Mr.Vanderwarker is throwing the baby out with the bath water.Blocking the frontage of the parking lot with a grassy medianwill only exacerbate the current situation by causing a backupof traffic from both directions as vehicles try to squeeze intoan even smaller parking lot. It might look prettier, but it wouldendanger drivers along Rt. 22. Why not build a parking lot onthe empty lot beside it? This might be a better use for $40,000.. .
And please, roundabouts are designed to replace traffic lightsat busy intersections – not to interrupt the otherwise smoothflow of traffic on a country road. It does not seem to botherMr. Vanderwarker that most if not all Keswick residents willbe inconvenienced by six roundabouts and the inevitable trafficpile-ups – obviously what happens to other people does notfigure into his scheme of things . Case in point: This summerthree residents in the Cismont/Rt. 231 area of the SouthwestMountains were bitten by copperheads. Adding minutes –even seconds – to emergency room trips such as these couldcost a life or two – for other people. Commuters, delivery andfarm workers, school buses, and locals on grocery trips – allother people – do not figure into his calculus. Moreover, it isMr. Vanderwarker himself who is spouting “alarmistmisstatements.”
Once again — just the facts, ma’am: VDOT has no plans –repeat, no plans – to four-lane Rt. 22/231. Anyone who doubtsthis can call Joel Denunzio, Charlottesville’s VDOTrepresentative for the Culpeper District and he will confirmthis fact. Mr. Vanderwarker states – alarmingly – that “Almostevery day someone goes off the road.” While his informationsource for this curious statement is unknown, the fact is, carefulstudies by VDOT have shown that the accident rate on Rt. 22/232 is average for this type of country road, and that most aresingle-car accidents caused by animals, or drunk or inattentivedrivers. Mr. Denunzio will confirm this study as well. Whybelabor the issue, facts are facts.
What bothers Mr. Vanderwarker – and apparently thePiedmont Environmental Council – about our country roaddoesn’t appear to bother anyone else. Rt. 22/231 is bothbeautiful and functional as is. Why paste it with concrete –and why cripple it for other people?
Streetscape expected to begin in September
The Gordonsville Streetscape project encompasses MainStreet between West King Street and Cobb Street, and islocated within the Town of Gordonsville Historic District, which
is on the National Register of Historic Places. The $3 million projectaims to repair and replace sidewalks, curbs, and light posts.
New sidewalks, street lights, and landscaping are all a part of a facelift.The Town has developed a project scope, which includes the extensionof sidewalk to create a link between the historic downtown businessdistrict and the historic Exchange Hotel and Civil War Museum.Enhancements along the corridor include replacement of deterioratingsidewalks, curb and guttering; rehabilitation of drainage structures;crosswalk safety and aesthetic improvements; installation of pedestrian-scaled street lighting and trees; development of a corridor directionalsignage plan; and aesthetic improvements to the railroad overpass bridgeand retaining walls.
Streetscape project construction on Main Street is expected to begin inSeptember. Financing for the project has been secured. They will bemoving into the mobilization of the project with the contractor thisSeptember.and expected it to take 18 months to complete. When it is
done Gordonsville will have street trees and brick sidewalks, etc.
Some business owners in Gordonsville are concerned about streetscape improvements Please know thatthe Town is sensitive to the fact that the timing ofthis project is critical to the viability of our downtownmerchants. All effort will be made to timeconstruction in a way that, as much as is possible,has the least impact on patronage.The town saysconstruction will be done in phases to avoidcongestion outside storefronts during the holidayseasons. For now, business owners are hopeful theirsales won't suffer.
The Town looks forward to the implementation andultimate completion of this project, which will gohand-in-hand with the efforts of our downtownmerchants to make downtown Gordonsville awonderful place to shop, dine and visit!

The study, lead by a team of Harvard researchers,initially set out to find out why people still choose tolive in declining cities. The researchers used nationalsurvey data, from sources such as the Centers forDisease Control, to track how citizens rate their lifestylesatisfaction on a concrete scale. Then, they crunchedthe numbers to find which cities were the happiest —and the most miserable. Some good news: Year afteryear, the vast majority of people surveyed say they areeither “very satisfied” or “satisfied” no matter wherethey lived, whether it's a booming suburb or a down-on-its-luck city. Even still, the study found thathappiness levels often vary within geographic areas.Charlottesville, Virginia, is the happiest city in America,according to the study. The University of Virginiacollege town narrowly beat Rochester, Minnesota,Lafayette, Louisiana, and Naples, Florida.

The Virginia Historical Society is pleased to announce that Altria Group hasagreed to sponsor the VHS’s newest exhibit, “Dressing Downton: ChangingFashion for Changing Times.”
The nationally touring exhibit will run from October 2015 through January 2016 andwill be shown in the VHS’s newly created changing exhibition space, one of the projectgoals of its $38-million “Story of Virginia Campaign.”
The exhibition consists of 35 costumes and accessories from the popular PBSMASTERPIECE Classic program. Visitors will be able to explore the lives of Downton’saristocratic inhabitants and their servants during the World War I period.
“Altria has a long history of support for the arts,” said Jack Nelson, Executive VicePresident and Chief Technology Officer, Altria Group, and Board Vice Chairman,Virginia Historical Society. “And we are pleased to support the Virginia HistoricalSociety as it brings traveling exhibitions like ‘Dressing Downton’ to our hometown.This exhibition will be a great draw for residents and visitors alike.”

“The Story of Virginia Campaign” is designed to help the VHS better utilize portionsof its existing facility. This will allow for the display of even more of the Society’scollections as well as hosting more and larger events and exhibitions.
Future changing exhibitions will include “The Art of Seating: 200 years of AmericanDesign,” which will feature works by John Henry Belter, George Hunzinger, HerterBrothers, Stickley Brothers, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles & Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi,and Frank Gehry and many more.
“Pro Football Hall of Fame: Gridiron Glory,” another upcoming VHS changingexhibition, will highlight such storied objects as the Super Bowl trophy, a 1917 gameball used by Jim Thorpe and the Canton Bulldogs, Tom Dempsey’s famous kickingshoe created for his half foot, Mean Joe Greene’s jersey, and more than 200 other itemsfrom the sport’s rich history, normally housed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Admission to each of these special exhibitions is free for Virginia Historical Societymembers.
The Altria Group sponsorship of “Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times”is part of a $250,000 total commitment that also includes support for the installation of a new“Story of Virginia” exhibition, which is slated to open in late summer 2015. Going into the fall months, the Albemarle Boardof Supervisors will continue its chapter bychapter review of proposed revisions to the
county’s Comprehensive Plan. Their goal is to completethat review by December, with a public hearing and afinal adoption expected sometime in early 2015. TheComp Plan is a critical public document. It is thecounty’s planning guide for issues including land use,development, rural preservation, natural and historicresource protection, economic development, andtransportation; it is Albemarle County’s CommunityVision Statement.
On August 14, staff from The Piedmont EnvironmentalCouncil met with members of the Keswick communityat Grace Episcopal for an update on the county’s CompPlan review and to summarize several issues that willbe discussed in the coming months.
In early August, the BoS completed its review of theRural Area chapter, and PEC is pleased to report thatAlbemarle’s long-held commitment to ruralpreservation remains the cornerstone of the plan. Theboard rejected, recommendation to the board removedfrom the draft recommendations to allow in the by-right in the Rural Area more intensive commercialactivities by-right.
This change would have been a significant shift fromthe current county policy of requiring a spthatcurrently require a special use permit for such uses.
For example, Small-scale lodging (up to five guestrooms in a single-family home) is currently allowedby-right, but restaurants and larger guest facilities suchas inns or hotels are only allowed by special use permit.While such requests are not common in Albemarle,retaining the special use permit process for suchproposals allows the community to weigh in on suchproposals, and it gives the BoS the discretion to requiremitigation of any impacts from the use or to deny therequest altogether.
In September,The board will review Community Facilities andHousing, followed, tentatively, by the Growth Areachapter on October 7 and the Transportation chapteron November 11.
In October and NovemberDiscussions should be of particular interest to theKeswick community. While the proposed changes donot recommend any expansion of the Growth Area,during discussion of the Growth Area chapter weexpect continued debate over allowing more intensivecommercial activity on properties along the north sideof Route 250 between the Shadwell/I-64 exit and Route22/231.
The November sessionOn Transportation will include whether to retain orremove specific reference to suggested options fortraffic calming on Route 22/231 from the Comp Plan.In the spring of 2010, in response to ongoingcommunity concerns about traffic safety and the threatof VDOT widening segments of this corridor, PEC hiredtransportation expert Ian Lockwood to help developsome solutions. Mr. Lockwood spent a week here,during which he held multiple meetings with over 100local residents and local officials, reviewed traffic data,and made first-hand observations. As a result, a seriesof possible steps for the community to consider weredeveloped, with the next step being to work throughthe county to coordinate a formal planning process todetermine which, if any, of Mr. Lockwood’s suggestionsor other possibilities should be implemented.
While almost all of the attention has focused on theinclusion of roundabouts as one of the suggested toolsin the toolbox, it is important to re-emphasize thefollowing information that’s in the county plan: “Thereare many ways to implement [traffic calming on 22/231]. However, it is recommended that it beaccomplished through a series of projects from leastintrusive to most intrusive, understanding thatresidents have indicated a preference to prioritize thesimple changes over dramatic ones.”
Albemarle County continues review of changes
to Comprehensive Plan
The options available to the county in November are to:a) remove from the Comp Plan any reference to the 22/231 plan; b) retain reference to the concepts, but only asgeneric options for the entire county; or c) keep thedocument with its specific reference to 22/231.
PEC understands that the traffic calming plan, ascurrently presented, can be amended to removeextraneous information. It should also be revised toemphasize that the options were proposed for furtherdiscussion, not as a final plan to be immediately—andfully—implemented. Additionally, PEC welcomes thepossibility for these recommendations to be consideredfor any rural road in the county.
However, at the heart of this plan is thespecific and unique input from the Keswickcommunity. Residents have the opportunityto embrace ownership of the plan and urgethe county to not only retain it in the CompPlan, but to initiate the process by which thecommunity takes the necessary steps towardsa final plan and its implementation.
The PEC’s August 14 meeting was just the first in, whatwe hope will be, a series of ongoing and regular meetingswith the Keswick community.

While many of us look forward to Labor Day as our final goodbye to the sunny season, do you know thereal reason why we celebrate that special day?
Here’s a hint: It all started on Chicago’s South Side in a small industrial town called Pullman. Today, we needyour help to bring this amazing place greater recognition.
Founded in 1880, this 300-acre community was the utopian vision of railroad tycoon George Pullman. It wasthere in America’s first planned company town that rail travel changed forever with the advent of the luxuriousPullman Palace Car.
For years, factory workers living in modest row houses assembled the iconic sleepers, while thousands ofuniformed African American porters staffed cars that operated across the country. Slowly, though, the cracksbegan to show.
As the financial depression of the 1890s slowed production, George Pullman laid off hundreds of workers,reducing wages without reducing rent in company-owned housing. Across America, workers refused to servicePullman cars, disobeying a federal order and bringing rail traffic to a grinding halt. Violence erupted, and12,000 Federal troops were deployed to restore order. Days later, President Grover Cleveland signed a newholiday into law to appease angry workers on the heels of the failed strike — Labor Day.
Today, efforts are underway to designate the Pullman Historic District as a National Park so that future generationswill know the uniquely American stories it tells about the role of railroads in our industrial past, the formationof the first African American labor union, and the development of our country’s first model industrial town. Todo this, we need your help.

Born on February 16, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York,she was the daughter of Edith Ross Albinson Mullerand William Frederick Muller. She was also precededin death by her brother, William Ross Muller. Edith issurvived by her husband of 68 years, Paul MarlynGrinde. She is also survived by her children, BarbaraG. McMurry of Charlottesville, Joan Louise Grinde ofPalmyra, Thomas Ross Grinde and his wife, Tonya, ofVirginia Beach, Virginia, and Paige Grinde Lauster andher husband, Steffen, of Hunting Valley, Ohio. Othersurvivors include her grandchildren, John MorlandMcMurry, Matthew Kent Rumfelt, Paige ElizabethRumfelt, Emily Virginia Lauster, Paul Ross Grinde,Hannah Natalie Lauster, Vista Alexandra Grinde, andMaximilian Johannes Lauster; and in addition, threegreat grandchildren.
Edith first received her high school diploma fromRoslyn High School in Long Island, New York, afterwhich she attended Rutger's University, where shemajored in mathematics. Edee proudly served in theNavy during World War II. Grace Episcopal Churchin Cismont benefitted greatly from her many servicecommitments; Edee sang in the church choir and alsobecame Grace Episcopal Church's first female memberof the vestry, its first female treasurer, and its firstfemale senior warden. In addition to her role asbeloved wife and devoted mother, earlier in her lifeEdee worked for 15 years at Montague, Miller &Company Realtors, as a Sales Associate. Edee and Paulboth loved to golf; they often enjoyed time in Floridain the winter, always returning in the spring to tell thetale of Edee's latest hole-in-one. In all, she posted 4 ofthese, including one in a tournament round. Anaturally curious person and a bibliophile, Edeealways kept her current book close at hand. Her ownmodel of remaining a life long student impressedmany, most especially her four children. She felt thather children, and the families they subsequentlyformed, stood as the proudest of all her lifeachievements..
