I would like to thank Ann for the invitation to speak and congratulate her and her team on pulling together this event. When Ann ask me to speak at this event event I immediately agreed but must admit I did ask her for some notes on what she wanted to speak about. Amongst other things these notes contained three questions
How possible is it to be flexible in a teaching and learning environment in a HEI?What is stopping us moving forward? What will encourage the changes needed for UDL?
By the end of this talk hopefully I will have answered these questions for you or at least helped you answer them yourselves

Universal Design for Learning is an approach to diversity that builds on best practices already in place. All learners are different, they learn differently and the diversity that exists in your class is the new normal, the natural variability that actually reflects the wider population. UDL addresses the variations between the learners and focuses on the learning process by providing:-Multiple means of engagement -Multiple means of representation -Multiple means of action and expression
Presenting information and ideas in multiple ways is an essential part of good teaching. This principle of UDL addresses diverse learning styles and provides multiple opportunities for students to grasp key concepts. Apply this principle by breaking up long lectures and reading assignments into activities that engage students in listening, watching, reflecting, and doing. Offer documents in multiple electronic formats (HTML, RTF, PDF, etc.), and check materials for compliance with accessibility standards and guidelines6
