Robotics Engineering I is designed to engage middle school
students in learning that is specific to STEM Standards (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math) and its technologic relevance
including general skills such as problem solving. This program is
intended for the first-time Robotics Engineering student.
Students will work in teams of two (2) to build a Lego EV3
Robot and use LabView software to program their robot. Students
will learn how to program robot behavior using motor rotations,
sound, light and ultrasonic sensors. Our curriculum module is
designed to teach core computer programming, logic, and
reasoning skills using a robotic engineering content. All this
creativity and learning will take place while the students are
enjoying themselves and having fun doing it!

Targeted to students in grades 3-6 and grades 6-8 with several class offerings
the World of Minecraft class presents an opportunity for students to use one of the world’s
most popular creative tools to build and explore a new universe. The creative and building
aspects of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D
procedurally generated world.
Students will utilize these aspects of the popular game to learn how to use basic
controls, explore new worlds and plan, create, and build their own buildings and landmarks
as well as using the open world to make their own visions come to life.
This course will give students the skills to use Minecraft as a learning tool and show
them the benefits of teamwork, planning, trial and error, and the freedom of imagination.

Targeted to students in grades 3-6 and grades 6-8 with several class
offerings Lego Mindstorms merges the popularity of Lego with the cutting edge
technology of Robotics. Students will create their own robot using Lego building blocks
and gradually add motion sensors and attachments to it.
Working in teams of two (2) students will utilize their robots to problem solve
and complete specific tasks. The team will use the Lego Mindstorms software to create a
program that is then transferred to their robot.
Learning about robotics and engineering enables students to develop skills that
will prepare these young learners for future education. These skills include problem-
solving, collaborating with their peers, and strengthening science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) skills as well as skills to create innovative ideas.
We expect our students to have fun while learning some extremely valuable
skills.

The Lego Construction Challenge program is intended for students
who have some experience building with Lego bricks and who enjoy the
challenge to make what they see on the box or use their imagination and
create something new.
Builders will work in teams of two (2) or three (3) to take on the
challenges of building unique vehicles, experimental structures and
awesome Lego models. They will also be building valuable skills such as
teamwork, problem-solving skills, and dexterity.
A foundation of STEAM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art
and Math) can help kids succeed in a world that moves faster every day.
To succeed tomorrow, kids need the tools to help them get there
today. Lego Construction Challenge will provide the opportunity for these
skill sets to develop and grow.

Created at the Museum of Science—Boston through its
National Center for Technological Literacy Institute, this program is
one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
programs newly offered in this year’s Kids Summer Learning Center.
EiE Units are associated with particular science topics, not
specific grade levels. Targeted towards students in Grades 3—6,
each unit will focus on one particular field of engineering and one
science topic.
Offered over a four week period, each week will present a different
science topic and field of engineering.
Courses are as follows:
JUNE 27th –JULY 1st MARVELOUS MACHINES
JULY 18th—JULY 22nd A SLEEK SOLUTION: CLEANING AN OIL SPILL
JULY 25th-JULY 29th CATCHING THE WIND: DESIGNING WINDMILLS
AUGUST 1st - AUGUST 5th TAKING THE PLUNGE
12
Offered to students in Grade 3-6, Marvelous Machines will
guide students to think like industrial engineers as they explore the
surprising variety of simple machines people use every day.

new.
Offered in two (2) one-week segments:
The first class, which is the week of July 11, 2016 to July 15, 2016, will be sculpturing
with clay to design and create Minecraft landscapes. Students will utilize aspects of the popular
game to create buildings and landmarks to make their own version come to life.
The second class, which is the week of July 18, 2016 to July 22, 2016, will have students
designing and creating a dinosaur. Students may imitate models of a real-life dinosaur or they
may create their own version of a dinosaur.
Ceramics is a multi-staged process which requires instruction and attention to detail
at each stage of its development. Students will form their own clay sculpture using different
tools and techniques. Upon completion, the sculpture will be ceramic—kiln fired to make them
permanent. Color will be applied after the sculpture returns to room temperature using a
variety of materials to add detail. Students will then be proud owners of their own creation.
