eek Kilkenny 2009. Intro
National Heritage Week
Heritage Week is a nationwide programme of events that celebrates our natural, built and cultural heritage. The theme of this years national Heritage Week is “Be part of it; it’s part of you”.
Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council, in conjunction with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and is part of European Heritage Days, which is celebrated in 40 countries across Europe.
Kilkenny Celebrates Heritage Week
This brochure, prepared by the Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council, provides details of all events which are taking place around the city and county of Kilkenny to celebrate Heritage Week 2009.
In Kilkenny we are very fortunate to have a rich heritage, including our mediaeval buildings and streetscapes, the wildlife of our rivers and woodlands, heritage parks and gardens, folklore and our rich archaeological heritage. Heritage contributes to so many aspects of life in Kilkenny: it supports our quality of life; contributes to our local pride and sense of place, and provides significant direct and in-direct employment throughout the county.
Heritage Week is a great opportunity for people to take part in, learn about and enjoy our heritage. Over the last few years the number of events organised by community groups, historical societies, and statutory organisations throughout the county has grown significantly. A special thanks to all of those who have organised events, without them Heritage Week wouldn’t happen.
The years’ activities celebrate all aspects of Kilkenny’s heritage and include guided walks, photographic and archive exhibitions, talks, a play, readings, music recitals, a camogie and hurling blitz, a family fun day, and much more. There’s something for everyone. It’s an opportunity to take part and find out more about the heritage in the county. An added bonus is that most events are free!
I hope you all enjoy this years Heritage Week.
