Dos and Don'ts of Kitchen Exhaust Fan Selection:
Kitchen Exhaust is a special application and utmost care should be exercised in selecting the right fan, to ensure long trouble free operation.
KPB KPD
lFor kitchen exhaust applications, a forward curved (FC) fan is not recommended.
1. Kitchen exhaust consists of hot gases laden with oil, fats, dust and particulate matter. This forms an ideal combination for deposits on the concave side of a forward curved blade because of its high curvature. These deposits, unless cleaned at short intervals, first reduce fan performance by the narrowing of the blade passage and eventually to excessive vibration and ultimate damage of the FC impeller and the fan. 2. The forward curved impeller has a Power Overloading characteristics. This means that at a given RPM, the shaft power of a FC fan increases with the CFM. If the design static for a given application was incorrectly estimated and the actual static was less than design, the motor of the FC fan could overheat or even burn.
3. The FC fans are less efficient than their BI/BC counterparts.
lDon't use a fan with the motor/drive train in the path of the contaminated exhaust air.

l2007 ASHRAE Handbook HVAC Applications, Chapter 31, Kitchen Ventilation, Pages 31.12 & 31.13 : Recommends the use of a C e n t r i f u g a l F a n w i t h Backward Inclined/Curved Impeller for kitchen exhaust applications.
1. Blowtech's KPD and KPB Series fans have BI/BC impellers which have self cleaning properties. This considerably reduces maintenance frequency. Because of very few number of blades (6 to 8), it is much easier to clean BI/BC blades.
2. Blowtech's KPD and KPB Series fans exhibit Limit Load characteristics i.e the shaft power has a maximum value and the motor rating generally corresponds to this maximum value. Thus for the given speed, no matter what the static, the shaft power will always be less than motor power.
3. Blowtech's innovative plug fan design uses high efficiency BI/BC Impellers. Higher efficiency means less power for a given duty point.
lIn Blowtech's KPD and KPB fans, the motor/drive train is kept outside the air stream.
lThe casing of the Blowtech BI Plug Fan is made of Aluminum Extrusions with puff insulated double skin panels. This adds to the aesthetics of the system, considerably reduces casing sound and leads to an overall quite operation of the fan.
lFor a given duty, the BI/BC Impeller's speed is closer to the RPM of commercially available standard motors. This feature makes the BI plug fan more amenable to Direct Drive configuration. Our direct driven KPD series fans are available in 8 sizes.

KPD Series - Direct Driven
The KPB series belt driven fans are available in 13 sizes in capacity upto 33000 CFM. These fans can be used for any specific duty as the fan speed can be set to any desired value by adjusting the fan/motor pulley ratio.
Blowtech's Direct Driven Fans are an economic alternative to the belt driven KPB Fans since the BI Impeller is mounted directly on the motor shaft. You save on the cost of bearings, shaft, pulleys & belts. KPD fans are available in 8 sizes in capacity upto about 16000 cfm. Because the fan speed is fixed, choice of duty points is limited.

The innovative plug fan design incorporating a high efficiency Backward Inclined (BI) SISW Impeller does away with the need for a conventional scroll housing, thus permitting a fan with universal orientation. Depending on site conditions, the outlet flange can be mounted at any one of the three orientations - Left, Right or Vertical Discharge, because the outlet flange and the two side panels are of equal size and inter-changeable. So you do not have to know the site condition before ordering the fan.
