Water temperatures inKentucky rivers hoveringin the high 30s to low 40sdo not inspire confidencethat it is a great time togo fishing.

However, for Kentuckysauger anglers, right nowis glory time.

"I fished below Lockand Dam 6 on the Ken-tucky River last Satur-day and I caught 12sauger," said Ryan Oster,federal aid coordinatorfor the Kentucky Depart-ment of Fish and WildlifeResources. "The fish arethere. The better fish Icaught farther down-stream from the dam."

A five year stockingprogram commenced in2006 placed hundreds ofthousands of fingerlingsauger in the KentuckyRiver from Lock andDam 4 upstream to theheadwaters. Excellentsauger fishing is nowfound throughout theriver.

The next few weeksbring sauger below locksand dams not only on theKentucky River, but theOhio River, the Cumber-land River below LakeCumberland, the Ten-nessee River below Ken-tucky Lake and the Cum-berland River below LakeBarkley. These areasoffer anglers bank fishingopportunity as well asfishing from a boat.

Sauger hit orange,chartreuse, lime-green,white or pink curly-tailedgrubs and soft plasticminnow imitators fishedon the bottom just belowthese dams. Dependingon current, you'll needanywhere from a 1/4-ounce leadhead up to anounce or more. If yourlure isn't regularly con-tacting bottom, then youlikely aren't catchingsauger.

In addition to soft plas-tic lures rigged on lead-heads, walleye fishingtactics using a spinnerrig work for late wintersauger in the deep holesbelow dams.

The combination ofbright plastic beads, arotating blade, and alively minnow is hard forsauger to resist. In turbidwaters fish orange, yel-low, white, chartreuse,pink or other bright-col-ored bead and blade com-binations for added visi-bility.

Spinner rigs are easy totie and inexpensive tomake.

Start with a three-to-four-foot piece of 10-pound test monofilamentor fluorocarbon line.

Tie on a single #4 wall-eye hook to the end of theleader with a clinchknot.   

Thread two or three5mm beads on the leaderand slide them down tothe hook. Sometimesanglers thread a smallfoam float (5/16 wide by11/16 inches long) on theleader to make the rigmore buoyant, so thehook is less likely to snagon the bottom.

Next, slip a stain-less steel clevisthrough the eye of ablade and thread theleader through thesmall openings onboth ends of the cle-vis. Slide the spinnerblade assembly downthe line so that itcomes to rest againstthe beads or float.

The final step is tocut the leader to thedesired length andtie a loop knot on thefree end of theleader. Experimentwith color, blade sizeand style, either Col-orado or Indiana, tofind out which rig ismost effective on agiven day.

Attach the rig tothe snap at the top ofthe bottom bouncer.When fishing inrivers in the springabout 1 1/2 to 2 1/2ounces of lead isheavy enough tokeep your rig on thebottom in moderatecurrent.

Fishing success isall about presenta-tion. Motorupstream to thedam, then let theboat drift throughthe area you want tofish. By keeping theweight in contactwith the bottom, thebaited rig will driftjust a few inches offthe bottom, thedepth needed toentice a bite frombottom-huggingsauger.

Over the next fewyears, Kentuckiansmay catch sauger inthe Green Riverdownstream ofGreen River Lake, inthe Salt River belowTaylorsville Lakeand in the middlestretch of the BarrenRiver. The fisheriesdivision of KentuckyFish and Wildlifestocked 188,000 fin-gerling sauger in theGreen River, 32,000in the Salt River and50,000 in the BarrenRiver over the pasttwo years.

"We hope to estab-lish a viable repro-ducing population ofsauger in theserivers," said GerryBuynak, assistantdirector of fisheries

for Kentucky Fish andWildlife. "We hope tohave sauger fishing rightin downtown BowlingGreen."
