CHANNEL 9 will be thrilledafter the Kylie Minogue fac-tor boosted the ratings for theBritish version of The Voice.

Kylie Minogue’s addition tothe line-up is being cited asthe reason the BBC show ad-ded more than two million vi-ewers from this weekend’sseason three premiere.

Saturday’s show peakedat more than 10 million vi-ewers, two million more thanlast year.

The crowd regularly chant-ed ‘‘Kylie! Kylie! Kylie’’ whencontestants were trying tochoose a mentor.

Minogue’s performance asa judge has been hailed byBritish commentators.

The Telegraph stated in areview yesterday: ‘‘From theoutset of episode one it’s clearthat Kylie’s the likeable andarticulate heart of the showsomething the pouting JessieJ never was.’’

Minogue replaced singerJessie J, who quit to concen-trate on her music career.

The other new addition isRicky Wilson from UK rockband Kaiser Chiefs. He rep-laces Danny O’Donoghuefrom The Script.

The British program alsofeatures Tom Jones andwill.i.am, with the latterset to join Minogue in theAustralian Voice.

‘‘Wilson and Kylie reallymake you feel like they werealways part of the show,’’ TheTelegraph said. ‘‘They gelvery well with will.i.am andJones and have formed some-thing of a dream panel.’’

Commentators believedJessie J and O’Donoghue lac-ked the experience to act asqualified mentors.

In their piece, headed ‘‘WhyThe Voice is now better thanThe X Factor’’, The Telegraphstated ‘‘Jessie J and DannyO’Donoghue just didn’t work.O’Donoghue lacked pizzazz(and indeed a media profile)while Jessie J failed toconnect with any viewerswho weren’t 13 years oldand ‘WhatsApping’ intheir bedrooms.’’

Minogue’s first addition to

her team was insurance man-ager Lee Glasson, who sang amoody version of her hitCan’t Get You Out ofMy Head.

Up-and-coming Hollywood leading man Christopher Pine learned some lessons from veteran Kevin Costner

LOS ANGELES: There’s ascene in Jack Ryan: ShadowRecruit where Chris Pine andKevin Costner are sitting ona park bench in the middleof Moscow.

Pine, playing the youngCIA analyst Jack Ryan, hasjust survived a surprise ex-ecution attempt in his hotelroom and has retreated to thepark to talk to his boss at theCIA, William Harper, por-trayed by Costner.

It is a quiet scene in themiddle of the action film.

It involves the worldly,been-there, done-that Harperoffering words of advice to thewet-behind-the-ears Ryan,who has been forced out fromhis behind-the-desk gig to be-come the prey of a billionaireRussian businessman, who isco-ordinating a terrorist at-tack in New York timed withanother plot to destroy theUS economy.

When the cameras weren’trolling in that scene, Costnerand Pine remained on thepark bench.

It was the final scene theyshot on the movie.

Just like the charactersthey were playing, Costner,the 58-year-old, two-timeAcademy Award winner, wasoffering words of advice toPine, the 33-year-old who hasbecome one of Hollywood’stop young leading men.

‘‘Moments like that arepriceless, Pine said.’’

Pine has had plenty ofpriceless moments since be-ing the surprise choice in2009 to star as Captain JamesT. Kirk in JJ Abrams’ rebirthof the Star Trek film fran-chise, and then named by asthe latest actor to play JackRyan, based on the spy novelsby author Tom Clancy.

Costner said he could seePine’s potential.
