MANY VALLEY PATIENTS SEEK JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY
AT VALLEY BAPTIST IN HARLINGEN
From The DocTor’s NoTebook
HARLINGEN -- Few hospitals in Texas have amassed the experience at performing joint replacement surgeries that Val-ley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen has, as one of the state’s leaders in orthopedic surgery. Last year, orthopedic surgeons at Valley Baptist-Harlingen performed 573 total knee replacements and 101 total hip replacements.
Joint replacement surgery may be performed for patients who have pain, discomfort, or loss of function because of arthritis, accidents, or other causes. Arthritis can eventually cause a joint to deteriorate or wear out to the point that partial or total replace-ment is necessary. The replacement procedure is designed to relieve pain and restore mobility to the patient. In addition to knees, examples of joints which can be replaced by a prosthesis include hips, shoulders, wrists, fingers, and toes.
Valley Baptist’s orthopedics department has also received recognition for its efforts to reduce the length of stay for patients hospitalized after orthopedic surgery. Valley Baptist’s orthopedic surgery rooms are equipped with Laminar Flow, a positive sterile air flow system which reduces infections.
Following joint replacement surgery, Valley Baptist helps pa-tients recover through care on a specially-equipped orthopedics floor staffed by nurses experienced at caring for patients after joint replacement surgery. The 39 private orthopedic rooms are equipped with Continuous Passive Motion machines, which en-able patients to keep their knees moving, even while in bed. This helps prevent the patient’s leg from stiffening up after surgery, and helps patients to start walking again sooner. Overhead tra-pezes and bars above the patient beds help recovering patients by providing leverage when they are trying to move in their bed or get in or out of the bed. Once the patient is out of bed, they begin to walk again with assistance from physical therapists and side rails located along the hallways in the unit.
Valley Baptist also offers comprehensive rehabilitation pro-grams which range from an intensive inpatient rehabilitation program to outpatient services after discharge from the hospital. Physical therapy plays a major role in the recovery of orthopedic patients.
For more information on joint replacement procedures, please consult your physician and visit www.valleybaptist.net.
ORTHOPEDICS NURSES - Orthopedics nurses at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen include, from the left, Rolando Ramos, RN, Nurse Manager for the Orthopedics Unit; Cathy Richmond, RN; Sharisse Garibay, RN; Tony Manuel, RN; Elizabeth Farinas, RN; Cristina Almanza, RN, Clinical Supervisor for the Orthopedics Unit; and Achamma Phillip.

Thunder 1983-2011
Your black dapples and points may have faded to grey through the years, but your steady and willing way never waivered. Your were a roper, a teampenner, and trail pony extraordinaire, but your greatest gift was your caring way with a young boy who grew to manhood as you both raced through the years.
A kind gentle soul, you would stretch out low for your young rider even when he grew much taller than you. You ran through the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, at warp speed after a calf and to the top of the Bandera hills as you spread joy in the hearts of all those who had the chance to sit on your back.
“In the end, we’re not certain if God entrusts us to our horses or our
horses to us.” –author unknown
Thunder, you will never be forgotten for your hon-est way of going; putting up with inexperienced riders and the many miles ponying the new colts. Many a new pony learned their lessons at your knee. Always a gentleman, it only took a glance to let the herd know you were head honcho in the pasture.
We have all shed many tears today as we said our good byes and shared the many blessings that you have brought to our lives in the past 17 years. As you were beginning your 28th year, your chronic hoof issues continued to mount and finally you whis-pered…it’s time.
So lay down my friend and close your sweet eyes…be free from the pain and run in the pastures of heav-en with God as your caregiver. Thanks for the love and memories
