Short History of Lafayette Utilities System• 1879 – Lafayette is established
• 1896 – Lafayette citizens support establishing their own electric and water system
• 1900 – University of Louisiana at Lafayette established
• 1949 – City successfully fought off attempted buy out of electric utility system
• 1998 – LUS built fiber for its utility system
• 2000 – Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development authority worked with LUS to establish a wholesale and governmental retail network
• 2004 – City proposed its 4th utility – Fiber to the Home and Business
Quick History of LUS Fiber Project• 2004: LUS suggested a Fiber-to-the-Home-and-Business initiative
throughout the City of Lafayette
• “Local Government Fair Competition Act” passed at the behest of private telecommunications and cable TV providers
• Private telecommunications providers successfully filed suit
• 2005: Public votes 62% to 38% for the project
• Private telecommunications providers successfully filed suit
• 2006: Two “unknown” citizens filed suit
• 2007: State Supreme Court rules in favor of LUS
• July - $110.4 million in bonds are issued for LUS Fiber project
New Municipally-Provided Services• On February 5, 2009, LUS Fiber will provide retail telecommunications
services to residential and smaller business customers
• On average, 20% less than standard competitor pricing for Cable TV, Phone and Internet
• Our vision is far beyond just providing basic TV and phone services
• This Lafayette initiative is already garnering considerable positive attention for Lafayette
