LakeForest-LakeBluffHistoricalSocietyhashadanotherbanneryearcelebratingthebestofourcommunity.

WeBsiteOneofourbiggestachievementswasaredesignofour website. We transformed our website intoa dynamic and vibrant arm of the museum. Allof the areas of focus in our mission (exhibits,publications, programs, collections, and research)are enhanced with a website component tosupplementouron-sitepresence.Forexample,ourpopular 2009 Hole In One golf exhibit is viewableagain on our Online Exhibits page. Every monthanewartifact ishighlighted inourCollections Cameoblog.Researcherscanfindoutabout the community from numerous databases on the site including the City ofLake Forest Officials Databasewhich listsalderman,mayorsandcitymanagersgoingbackto1861.

A design was chosen that combines clean, contemporary lines and straightforwardnavigationwithacolorschemeinspiredbypaintchipsfromthe1920s,aneraintrinsictoourcommunity’sidentity.Thewebsiteintegratesmanyofthetoolsofourcurrentwebera,likeblogs,photogalleries,onlineeventregistrationandmembershiprenewal,andane-newsletter.ThesiteisdistinctiveinitsdepthandbreadthamonghistoryinstitutionsofoursizeandwonanawardfromtheIllinoisAssociationofMuseums.

The newwebsite has revolutionized our ability to engagewith audiences who lookto thedigital, rather than thepaper-based, for communications, entertainment, andresearch.Withitsnewdesignandfeatures,ourwebsitehasbecomeavehicletokeepourcommunity’spastrelevant,toconnectwithourpatrons,andtoextendourmuseum’smissionoflearningandpreservationbeyondourwalls.

LocaL LegendsOur success over the last year extended wellbeyondthenewwebsite.ThesecondyearoftheLocal Legends event confirmed that this eventis a winner. The interview of honoree architect

Mission stateMentThe Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society inspires an awareness of the community’s history and an appreciation of its relevance through: • Delivering engaging exhibitions, publications and public programs • Collecting and preserving local heritage and culture; and • Supporting historical research

the excitement around the program. This past year, we added a children’scomponent to round out the program to appeal to all ages. One hundredchildrenbuilttheLEGO®kitoftheBurjKhalifaandparticipatedintheirownLEGO®towerdesigncompetition.Asanaddedbonus,AdrianSmithandLEGO®MasterBuilderAdamReedTuckerwereonhandtosignthemodelsandjudgethecompetition.

PrograMs and researchOthereventswereofferedtocapacitycrowdsaswell.SpiritsofthePast,ourlivinghistorytourofLakeForestCemetery,kickedoffthefallseasonwithvisitsfrombeyondthegrave.Ourlecturesspannedavarietyoftopicsfromthe100thanniversaryofGreatLakesNavalStationtomemoriesofthegone,butnotforgotten,MarshallField’s,totheMagnificentMedills.Wefinishedtheyearwithanothersold-outtour,thistimeofCrabTreeFarminLakeBluff.

We honored three additional families with the Centennial Family Award.Our Timeline of Lake Forest History, prepared during the Lake ForestSesquicentennial, won an Award of Merit from the Illinois Association ofMuseumsandhasfoundapermanenthomeonournewwebsite.

TheseareexcitingtimesfortheLakeForest-LakeBluffHistoricalSociety.Weareclearlywellpoisedforcontinuedsuccessandgladtohavesomanymembers,volunteersandsupportersenjoyingthejourneywithus.

Over 150 hardy souls braved the rain to hear the stories ofSylvester Lind and other local figures at our Spirits of the Pastliving history cemetery tour on September 18.
