Sheese. One little note to the Congregational Council about a
mouse and now I get to write about a work day. That will teach
me.
OK, here is the deal: John says the Property Committee will hold
a Congregational Work Day on Wednesday October 23, starting
at 9:30 AM. Coffee, orange juice and donuts will be provided.
Gotta love those Krispy Kremes. I think John is addicted.
Projects will include, but are not limited to the following:
Flower Bed and shrub winter prep and trimming
Filling of a hole in the yard from a water leak
Painting the flag pole in the cemetery
Replacing light fixture lenses in the Portico.
Cleaning of the Mechanical Room (Finally! This place is a
mess. )
Cleaning of the Pavilion Shed. (It’s a mess too!)
General Cleaning of other areas that you think need a general
cleaning.
One more item I forgot
So please come out, help John and the Property Committee get
the church and grounds ready for Fall, get some exercise and
fresh air and enjoy some fellowship. But don’t bother me – I will
be hiding in the nice clean attic!
The Mechanical Room Ghost
In the church we often hear the word “Liturgy”. What does this word mean to us as
Christians and as a worshipping community? The word “Liturgy” comes from the Greek
word “leitourgia” which means “the work of the people”. So, the liturgy isn’t only a type
of worship service that may involve chanting.
Liturgy is the work of the people in worship, it involves everyone that attends worship.
You may ask what kind work is accomplished within the service? We offer to God our
praise, thanksgiving, supplication and/or repentance through our act of worship which
also involves a communal response.
According to the Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms “Liturgical spirituality
emerges from corporate actions of worship using liturgical forms, including those of the
sacraments and ordinances of the church”.
So, what is liturgical worship? Liturgical Worship is a formal structure of worship which
includes the worshipping community. Worship in the Lutheran church involves all the
senses. We hear, taste, smell, sing, praise, pray and see the Word throughout the
whole service. We follow a pattern of worship that was instituted by the early church.
According to the ELCA’s Use and Means of Grace our pattern of worship is as follows:
Gathering: “The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God” (ELW p. 92) The
gathering does just that: it gathers us in preparation for hearing God’s word and
receiving God’s presence in Holy Communion. Elements of the gathering may include
song, prayer, confession/baptismal remembrance. It may be very brief or extended
depending on local practice, season of the church year or other factors.
Word: “God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song” (ELW p. 92). The
corporate hearing of God’s word has its roots in Jewish tradition. From the earliest
times, reading -- singing -- reading -- singing created a natural rhythm of proclamation
and response. The rhythm provides quiet time for worshipers to listen attentively and
active time to respond, reflect, and prepare for what is coming -- preaching on the
proclaimed texts. In a world of short attention spans, it is a pattern worth keeping.
Within the liturgy of the Word, the traditional order has been Old Testament reading,
psalm, New Testament reading, gospel acclamation, Holy Gospel, and sermon. The
experience of hearing God’s word is followed by a series of responses from the
assembly. While many Christians share this general pattern of worship, Lutherans in
particular treasure an element of this pattern called the Hymn of the Day. More than a
hymn based on the sermon, this hymn or song brings together the themes expressed in
the biblical texts and the season of the church year. By singing together, the assembly
adds its voice to the proclamation of God’s word. The service of the word concludes
(sometimes) with the reciting of the creed and most always with the prayers of the
people. The exchange of peace bridges the word portion of this pattern with the meal
portion.
Meal: “God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ” (ELW p. 93) The pattern
surrounding the meal finds its prototype in the scriptural accounts of the institution of
Christ’s supper: Jesus "took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it." The table
setting, great thanksgiving, breaking of bread, and communion is how Christ’s
command to "do this in remembrance of me" is lived out today, as it has been for
centuries.
The Evangelism Committee is responsible for developing programs of evangelical
outreach to the congregation and the community by bringing awareness of LLC through
the publicity of church activities. We encourage church members to reach out to those
in need and provide help in our community.
The committee publicizes church activities through the Lake Gaston Chamber of
Commerce Newsletter, area newspapers, the church website, Facebook, flyers and no-
tices in area businesses, radio announcements, and the digital sign on our front lawn by
taking pictures and writing articles that are then posted.
The committee is responsible for ordering advertising materials such a writing
pens, printed cups and church brochures. Banners publicizing activities such as the
Easter Egg Hunt or Vacation Bible School are designed and erected by our committee.
Flyers advertising activities are delivered to area businesses to make the community
aware of upcoming events.
Greeters for the Sunday services are assigned and scheduled by our committee.
We are also responsible for filling the bags that are given out to visitors each Sunday.
Chair back literature is kept stocked by our members. The bulletin board in the hallway
outside of the kitchen is kept up to date by our committee.
God’s Work, Our Hands is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - one church, freed in Christ to serve and love
our neighbor.
We are responsible for planning GWOH activities, such as organizing tutoring at
Vaughan Elementary School, providing lunch for Vaughan employees twice a year, and
supplying school uniforms for needy Vaughan students. We organize roadside trash
pickup, pass out cool water to the public at area events, assist area business in any way
we can to help our community.
These are just a few of the duties that we are responsible for doing. We would
love to have more help on our committee, New ideas are always welcome. We would
love to have you join us.
The Evangelism Committee
Sending: “God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world” (ELW p. 93) The
objective of the sending is to empower the assembly to take God’s message into the
world. This is typically the briefest portion of the service, often consisting of a blessing,
sending, song and communion. Sending communion to the absent may also be included
(see also, “How can we provide for communion of the ill, homebound, and
imprisoned?”). Once strengthened by the meal, it is time for God’s people to be sent into
the mission field: "Go in peace. Serve the Lord.””
Our worship is our gift to God !
Pastor Sherrie Hofmann
October 1st is the seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost, out of twenty-four Sundays. We continue with the liturgical color of green, signifying personal growth in faith.
As we concluded our first seasonal celebration using Of the Land and Seasons, the assembly, or congregation, had parts to sing as well as the choir as leaders and a cantor. What is the role of a cantor?
The cantor…the historical term among Lutherans, is the leader of the people’s song. The cantor is responsible for leading the musical expression of the people…the assembly, the choral groups, the solo singers and instrumentalists, and organists have been especially important for Lutherans. The cantor uses whatever musical resources that are available, using them in a manner appropriate to the talents of those people serving and the needs of the people being served. He/She also leads the earthly assembly in a foretaste of John’s vision of the heavenly assembly in which all creatures give praise, honor, glory and power to the Lamb. Our role of cantor is shared between Janice Thompson and Diane Colin, primarily, along with the choir in leading the musical expression of Lakeside Lutheran Church.
When Christ’s people, the baptized, gather for worship, they receive God’s love in word and sacrament, and through the gift of music, pray, praise, proclaim and recount the story of God’s grace in song. Our ELW and other hymn supplements such as Worship and Praise and With One Voice, are resources that contain our body of hymns adopted by the ELCA. As one professor of music shared at Lutheridge Music Week, “these hymns have withstood the test of time in their relevance to modern day faith.” They are like the Bible in that they are timeless in their words that support our faith and the gospel. It is a gift to sing the same songs as our forefathers, and to share these hymns with our children and grandchildren alike.
Dear Lord, hear us as we lift our voices in praise to you.
Diane Colin
Music Matters As we continue our move through the seasons of the church year, we
find ourselves in the latter part of Pentecost. This month you will hear
stories of faith and encouragement. The patience, tenacity, and
endurance required for the life of faith are the blessings received in
water and the word (holy baptism), bread and wine (holy
communion), and the word read and proclaimed in this assembly. We
will hear a letter from Paul to Timothy, a personal message of
encouragement. In the face of hardship and persecution, Timothy is
reminded that his faith is a gift of God. He is encouraged to exercise
that faith with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Dear Pastor Hofmann and church family:
The town of Littleton would like to thank you and your outreach ministry team that
came to the Town Hall and installed chair rails for our office and Board Room. We
appreciate so much their willingness to help. Mr. Phillips and Mr. Colin did an
exceptional job.
It is so nice there is an organization in the area that is always willing to lend a helping
hand to others. Even though both gentlemen are not town of Littleton citizens, their
willingness to help the town has not gone unnoticed.
May God continue to bless your church and your outreach ministry.
Sincerely,
K. Owen Scott

The LLC Mutual Ministry is a sub-committee of the Executive Committee. This committee will meet as necessary (at a minimum, quarterly) to provide a forum for open discussions between the pastor and the congregation. It’s also designed to act as an interface among the congregation, the staff, and the Congregational Committee concerning issues or ideas that may need to be addressed. Meetings of the committee may be open or closed depending on the sensitivity of the subject. Every effort will be made to provide an opportunity for the pastor and each member of the congregation desiring to do so to raise questions, problems or concerns which need to be brought into the open for discussion. New ideas are always welcome. It is expected that most of the concerns for consideration can be resolved by the committee; however, should it require a change in policy or procedures, the committee will present their findings to the Congregational Council for resolution. This committee is comprised of five members: Joe Armstrong, Dick Clayton, Peggy Kimble, Margaret Best, and Clay Huntington. Email addresses for each member are posted on the bulletin board for easy access.
Recently people have moved that helped as
tellers. This leaves not enough people to cover
each month, especially if there are 5 weeks.
Please consider helping, even if it’s as a sub. If
you are not sure of the duties involved, please
contact Joan Layton. Her email

Raising up to God those we know to be in need of his touch for healing and wholeness. The fol-
lowing list includes long term concerns. There is also a list in our weekly bulletin that has more current and
acute needs. Daily prayers for all these folks are important. Please help us to keep these lists cur-
rent. If you have names to add please call the church office. Likewise, if any of these names
can be removed please let us know that as well. Regularly remember these in your prayers...
We also invite regular prayers for:
• Our companion in Papua, New Guinea, Warangoi Lutheran Church
• Our Virginia Synod, Rev. Robert F. Humphrey and his Staff,
• And the ELCA, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton and her Staff.
• All who engage in missions around the world proclaiming the Gospel globally,
often in places of danger and hostility.
• In our prayers for world peace, we are also remembering to ask for God’s
care and keeping for those who have been deployed to places of potential
danger around the world. Many of these are in military service, but there are
also civilian agencies represented, support staff and humanitarian workers.
There are several such persons directly related to our church family for whom
we invite your prayers by name: Jason Watson, Terry Rutan, Amanda
Chavez, Andy Gerbing, Mollie Medearis, Parker McCall, KC Jones, & Mark
Pollak, Remington Foor, & Kendall Gillespy.

Care to Share will be October 13, 2019
Please mark your calendar to remember to bring non-perishable food items to be distributed to needy
families, this time through John 3:16. Monetary gifts may be given as well. If included in your
regular offering, please designate the amount under “other” with the notation “ Care to Share.” If
making a separate donation, please use an envelope from the back of a chair in the sanctuary and
clearly mark it “ Care to Share.” All monetary gifts should be placed in the offering plate....not the
baskets on the floor. This is especially important for “cash” donations.
Thank you for your continuing generosity.
