ApprenticeshipsWhat is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is ideal if you know which careerpath you want to follow, but you don’t want tostudy in full time education and you would like toearn a salary whilst learning.
All Apprenticeships are developed by the industrysector in which they will be used and give learnersthe skills they need to become a craftsperson,technician or manager in that area.
Depending on the course, you will either attendCollege once a week or on a block basis where youwill attend between 2-4 weeks depending on thecourse chosen. The remaining time will be spent inthe workplace. You will be working towardsachieving an Apprenticeship Framework.
What is an Apprenticeship Framework?
An Apprenticeship is a set of qualifications thatmake up a framework.
As an apprentice you are required to complete thefollowing qualifications, which make up theApprenticeship Framework:
• Work based learning qualification such as aLevel 2 NVQ
• Functional Skills
• Knowledge based qualification such as aBTEC Diploma (Technical Certificate)
Additionally apprentices will complete EmploymentRights and Responsibilities and any occupationallyspecific training such as Abrasive Wheels orFirst Aid.
There is potential once learners have completedtheir Apprenticeship to then continue onto theAdvanced Apprenticeship.
What is an Advanced Apprenticeship
Advanced Apprenticeships are similar toApprenticeships but at a higher level,normally Level 3 NVQ and a higher levelknowledge based qualification.
Some apprentices will be registered on anAdvanced Apprenticeship from day one,these include building services engineering,civil engineering, electrical, facilities management,gas installation and maintenance and surveying.

Business Training CoursesWe have a number of courses available forbusinesses and those who are self employed that canhelp provide you and your business with the skills itneeds to stand out and be competitive.
This could include refreshing existing skills, newskills for your employees or retraining.
We have a number of options from On SiteAssessment, Apprenticeships, Industry SpecificShort Courses and Higher Education andProfessional Qualifications.

On Site Assessment and Training (OSAT)
OSAT helps experienced workers get thequalifications to prove they can do the job.
It turns their existing skills and experience intoa nationally recognised qualification such as anNVQ or SVQ.
Having these qualifications also helps qualify themfor a Construction Skills Certification Scheme(CSCS) card. Assessment can be carried out on site,so attendance at College is not required.
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are a great way for you to growyour business without the large costs usuallyassociated with recruitment. The current Nationalminimum wage for apprentices is £2.65 per hour,and for 16-18 year olds it is free to send them toCollege. The current costs for over 19’s are £495 ifyour business employs less than 1,000 and £995 ifyou employ over 1,000.
We work with hundreds of employers who haveopted to take on an apprentice and they all say it isa very positive and rewarding way of recruiting newstaff. They allow businesses to develop apprenticesinto the ethos of the business, developing thespecific skills needed for a specialist workforce.
Apprenticeships are available in over 24 constructiontrades, including brickwork, carpentry & joinery,civil engineering, plastering and quantity surveying.For more information about Apprenticeshipssee page 22.

This will be your point of contact and is open dailyfrom 8.30 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Thursday and8.30 am to 4.30 pm on Fridays. Specially trainedstaff can offer you advice, information and help on allaspects of student life.
The College can provide course or other informationin a variety of different formats, including large printpaper copies and computer word-processed textson CD or email. An individual guidance interview witha Careers Adviser can also be arranged.

Admissions Policy
The College will aim to ensure that all enquiries andapplications for admission are handled fairly andefficiently by applying the following procedure:
• Student Services deal with all course enquiries(with the exception of short course applicationswhich are handled by the relevant short courseadministrator).
• The Student Services Manager is responsible forensuring that the appropriate action is taken inresponse to course enquiries. Initial enquirieswill receive a response within two working daysof receipt. Detailed enquiries, which may havebeen passed to a Faculty Director for action,will receive a response within five working daysof receipt.
• Applicants for full-time programmes will beinvited to sit an initial entry assessment relevantto their chosen course. Successful applicants willthen be invited to attend an interview.
• Applicants can also attend the College OpenEvents. Refer to page 4 for details, or check ourwebsite www.lcb.ac.uk for up to dateinformation.

General InformationTransport & Car Parking
Parking is not available to students at the NorthStreet or Millwright Street sites during the day,however limited parking is available to students onevening courses. There are reserved places fordisabled drivers. Limited student parking is availableat the Parkside Lane, Lockwood Way, Stourtonand RISE sites.
Bus links to the College are good and the NorthStreet and Millwright Street sites are approximately a15 minute walk from Leeds Train Station and a 5minute walk from the central bus station.Parkside Lane, Lockwood Way, Stourton and RISEsites have good bus links from the station and thecentre of Leeds.
Refectory Services
The North Street Refectory is open from 8 am until5.15 pm Monday to Thursday and 8 am until 2.45pm on Fridays during term time. Food vendingmachines are available in the refectory for studentson evening courses. There are additional vendingmachines near the workshop areas.
The Stourton Refectory is open to staff and studentsfrom 8 am until 3 pm Monday to Thursday and 8.45am until 2.45 pm on Fridays during term time. Foodvending machines are also available.
The Millwright Street refectory is open 8.15 am until1.00 pm Monday to Friday during term time. Foodvending machines are also available.
Food vending machines are available for students atParkside Lane, Lockwood Way and RISE sites.
