Located in southern Minnesota, Le Sueur County is about an hour south of the Twin Cities and known for its rolling hills, acres and acres of fertile farmland and 100 lakes. The largest, Lake Washington, is more than 1,500 acres.
Every summer, visitors from across the region fl ock to Le Sueur County to enjoy camping, boating, fi shing and a variety of water sports. In the winter, many of the ice-covered lakes boast clusters of fi sh houses where avid anglers happily await their catch.
The county seat, in Le Center (popula-tion 2,504), is home to the Richardsonian Romanesque revival courthouse, built in
1896 of brick and local Kasota stone. Atop its tower is the fi gure of Justice. The court-house is where the fi ve-member Board of Commissioners meet. Visit co.le-sueur.mn.us.
It’s the 38th largest of Minnesota’s 87 counties, with a population of 27,703, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The county’s 10 cities have distinct personali-ties and feature a number of celebrations, festivals and events throughout the year.
New Prague is the largest city, with a population of 7,439, though only about 3,081 live in the Le Sueur County portion. The remainder reside in the northern part of the city which lies in Scott County.
The city of Le Sueur is known as the home to the Minnesota Valley Canning Co, a precursor to Green Giant Co. where the famous Jolly Green Giant made his home. The company no longer has facilities in the city of 4,040, but residents continue to honor its ties to the company during its annual Giant Celebration.
The city of Montgomery is the third largest in the county, at 2,957.
While it’s among the state’s fastest-growing counties, Le Sueur County main-tains a strong agricultural base. In 2012 it

had 1,051 farms totaling almost 250,000 acres. Major crops and livestock include corn, soybeans, hogs, turkey, and beef and dairy cattle. According to the state 2012 Census of Agriculture, Le Sueur County farms provided more than $224 million in the market value of agricultural products sold. Of that amount, 63 percent was in crop sales. The remaining 37 percent was in livestock.
In 2013, the county’s 48 manufactur-ers accounted for the largest percentage of county jobs, 28.4 percent. That’s followed by the retail, education and public adminis-tration sectors.
Unemployment in February 2016 was at 6.4 percent, a little more than a percentage point higher than the national average of 5.2 percent for the same period.

Le Sueur County
10 Le Sueur County Community & Visitors Guide Le Sueur County Community & Visitors Guide 11
Le Sueur County is named after French explorer, Pierre Charles Le Sueur, who in 1700 was the fi rst white man known to have ventured up what is now called the Minnesota River.
Le Sueur’s group was impressed with the high hills, prairies fi lled with buffalo herds, thick virgin forests, rippling waters, and bluffs of limestone and sandstone. It would be another 150 years before pio-neers came to settle and build up their farms, homes and businesses in the “Big Woods.”
In 1853, the territorial legislature of Minnesota passed an act establishing a number of counties along the Minne-sota River. Le Sueur County was among them. The earliest settlements in Le Sueur County took place along the river, which, as a navigable stream, provided a highway into this part of the Minnesota Territory.
The fi rst permanent settlers had already arrived by steamboat in 1851 and established a site that would become the county’s fi rst town, Kasota.
Settlements at Le Sueur and Ottawa soon followed. Word spread about the splendor and opportunity to be found in the Minnesota River valley, attracting more
immigrants who moved further inland until each township had established settlements.
Le Sueur was the fi rst to grow into a town of any size and it was designated by the legislature as the county seat. Due to the condition of early roads, it was diffi cult for county residents to get to the county seat to conduct business. The community of Cleveland attempted to acquire it and held it for a short time in 1875 until Le Sueur was again designated.
Then a number of businessmen, led by L.Z. Rogers of Waterville, who wanted the county seat near the center of the county, acquired a tract of 160 acres at what is now Le Center and platted it. They offered the use of a newly constructed two-story brick building to the county board for a courthouse if a referendum of the county residents to move the county seat to this new location, which they called Le Sueur Center. The referendum passed. The county offi ces were moved to the new loca-tion in 1876. The county seat has remained there ever since.
The relocation had the effect of dividing the journey to the county seat as equally as possible between the residents of the vari-ous portions of the county.
History
10 Le Sueur County Community & Visitors Guide Le Sueur County Community & Visitors Guide 11
The name Le Sueur Center was changed to Le Center in 1930. The Le Sueur County Courthouse was built in 1896-97 with ex-tensive remodeling taking place in 1974-75 and again in 1994-95. Le Sueur County began with four set-tlers in a board house on the site of Kasota. Today 27,000 residents in 10 towns and 14 townships call Le Sueur County home.

Clear Lake County Park35194 Clear Lake Lane, Le Center Well-known for its sandy beaches and clear waters, the county park does not serve as a swimming beach, as the water gets deep immediately offshore. It has pic-nic grounds and an area where it’s easy to fi sh from shore along with four campsites offered on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis.
Lake Washington County Park47102 Lake Washington Park Road, Kasota507-995-1161 Lake Washington is the county’s most developed and popular lake. The property includes the outlet of the lake through Shankaska Creek, which leaves through a deep, narrow, winding gorge. The creek valley serves as a runway for wild game and is one of the outstanding terrain fea-tures of the park.
The park’s campground has 27 electric sites, one group camping electric site, a picnic shelter and trails, as well as show-ers and restroom facilities. Call ahead for reservations and fees.
Ney Nature Center28003 Nature Center Road, Henderson507-248-3474 • [email protected] Ney Nature Center is a 446-acre envi-ronmental learning center located on the bluffs of the Minnesota River near Hender-son that features public access to the river. It is open to the public for hiking, bird watching and cross-country skiing. It also serves as a regional teaching station for school children, and Community Educa-tion and Ney Foundation programming, and has facilities available for rent.
The park’s open prairies, thick woods and pond provide a habitat for a variety of bird species. The eastern bluffs of the river valley create breezy updrafts that attract soaring raptors. From the Pond Loop Trail, migrating waterfowl can be observed on stopovers on their long journey. From the meadows into the deep ravine trail, birders report many species of warblers. A feeding station, maintained by volunteers, can be viewed from the comfort of the interpretive center.
