CHEMISTRY
MAFLON® scientific research is based on the chemistry of fluorotelomers and perfluoroalkyliodides obtained by the
controlled polymerisation of tetrafluoroethylene. Fluorinated materials and compounds of type F(CF2)n(CH2)mX1 are used in
the laboratories to prepare fluorinated materials. These new chemical compounds are then used as raw materials for the
production of more sophisticated fluorinated products used in a wide range of application such as:
Fluorine-modified polymersApplied as a surface treatment in order to give oleo-hydro repellency and anti-stain properties
(e.g. poly(meth)acrylates, polyurethanes, polysiloxanes).
FluorosurfactantsMostly used as wetting and leveling agents in the formulation of floor polishes, detergents, waxes, paints, varnishes and
coatings.
Solid lubricants / Fluorinated solventsPerfluoroalkanes CF3(CF2)nCF3 and semifluorinated alkanes used as solid lubricants or fluorinated solvents with a high
solubility for oxygen and carbon dioxide.
All the products are characterised and tested in MAFLON® laboratories thanks to the following analytical and characterisation
techniques:
• Infrared spectroscopy (IR)
• Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
• Gel permeation chromatography (GPC)
• Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
• QUV weathering tests
• Tribological tests
• Tensiometer for surface and interfacial tension measurements.

HIGH PERFORMANCE IN FLUOROCHEMICAL PRODUCTS
Fluorine and Carbon form one of the strongest bonds known in organic chemistry and MAFLON® takes advantage of C-F
bonds to create chemicals for the development of a wide range of materials with attractive properties. MAFLON® products
can meet a wide range of applications and have been divided into different specific business lines, always offering tailor-made
solutions to the customers and remaining one step ahead of the competition. Maflon business lines include Lineplus
Fluoropolymers, Hexafor Fluoropolymers and Hexafor Surfactants.
Lineplus Fluoropolymers are offered as solvent or aqueous systems of specially designed (polymeric) compounds for the
surface treatment of stone, marble, tile, concrete, leather, textile, carpet, and all other substrates where high repellency is
required. They offer a highly durable and repellent protection against water, oil, coffee, red wine, etc. without modifying the
natural appearance of the treated substrates.
Lineplus include also low molecular weight PTFE additives designed to grant some of the fluoropolymer properties to the host
material. Specifically they can be used to reduce the friction coefficient, to enhance the wear resistance, the lubricity and the
non-stick properties of a variety of host materials such as printing inks, paints, coatings, thermoplastics, greases, lubricants,
plastics and elastomers.
Hexafor Fluoropolymers are a new family of oil and water repellents developed as an effective alternative to long-chain
perfluorinated chemicals (ex. Lineplus Fluoropolymers). They are based on short perfluorinated chain molecules containing
only 6 fluorinated carbon atoms avoiding the formation of hazardous chemicals (eg. PFOA) in the environment. Similar to the
Lineplus Fluoropolymers serie, Hexafor fluoropolymers provide a durable and transparent treatment for stone, marble, tile,
concrete, textile, leather, etc.
Hexafor Surfactants are highly effective and efficient fluorinated surface active agents based on short fluorinated chain.
They are especially designed to provide rapid spreading, wetting and leveling performance to various water-based coating
systems, such as paints, inks, floors, vanishes, polishes. Their low surface tension permits the wetting of substrates that are
difficult to wet with the common hydrocarbon surfactants. The Hexafor surfactants line includes anionic and nonionic surface
active agents.

MAFLON® Environmental Policy
The need for really sustainable solutions for 21st century life is one of the most
critical and important challenges facing the global community.
At MAFLON®, sustainable development does not just mean being an
environmentally friendly company, but also taking care of human beings safety.
Over the past decade (since 2000), there has been increasing concern about
products that contain long-chain perfluorinated chemicals (LCPFs) and various
actions have been undertaken to minimize the potential impact of these chemicals
on human health and on the environment, especially related to PFOA and PFOS.
Both these chemicals are thought to be persistent in the environment, bioaccumu-
lative and potentially toxic.
MAFLON® uses neither Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) nor PFOS intentionally
during its manufacturing processes. Moreover all MAFLON® repellents and
surfactants are telomere-based (refer to MAFLON® Scientific Approach) and
cannot therefore contain or produce PFOS, however trace levels of PFOA may
result as minor impurities in the raw materials or as a byproduct of the LCPF -
based products (C8 Lineplus series).
In 2006, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the USA and the eight
major companies active in the fluorochemicals market launched the 2010/15
PFOA Stewardship Program. According to this agreement, the companies com-
mitted to work towards eliminating the emissions and use of PFOA and related
substances (LCPFCs) by 2015. As well as EPA also the European Chemical
Agency (ECHA) considered in its analysis 2015 as the ultimate phase out deadline
for direct use of PFOA and related compounds.
MAFLON® is fully involved in the LCPFCs (PFOA) substitution/elimination process.
At the end of 2010 MAFLON® R&D team concluded the development of a new
line of products based on shorter chain perfluorinated chemicals (C4-C6 HEXAFOR
series). They show similar or even better performance in comparison to those of
LCPFCs (C8 Lineplus series) avoiding any possibility of PFOA release in the
environment.
At present, although all the new R&D projects are focused on the new C6 HEXA-
FOR series, MAFLON® guarantees the delivery of its C8 Lineplus series onto the
market until 2015.

HEXAFOR surfactants are highly effective and efficient fluorinated surface active agents based on short perfluorinated chains. They are especially designed to provide rapid spreading, wetting and leveling performances to a broad range of water and solvent borne systems such as detergents, paints and varnishes, inks, waxes and floor polishes. The use of HEXAFOR surfactants allows to develop formulations to improve several properties such as:
Thanks to the their extremely low surface tension, HEXAFOR surfactants are more effecient than hydrocarbon and silicone surfactants and they can be used for wetting surfaces which are “impossible” to wet out. Moreover, thanks to the presence of the fluorinated chain, HEXAFOR surfactants are more stable (thermally and chemically) and fit for harsh and extreme conditions than hydrocarbon surfactants. The introduction of fluorinated chain in surfactants offer excellent thermal stability permitting their use in extreme conditions.

Over the past decade (since 2000), there has been increasing concern about products that contain long-chain perfluorinated chemicals (LCPFs) and various actions have been undertaken to minimize the potential impact of these chemicals on human health and on the environment, especially related to PFOA and PFOS.
Both these chemicals are thought to be persistent in the environment, bioaccumulative and potentially toxic.
MAFLON®uses neither Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) nor PFOS intentionally during its manufacturing processes.
Moreover all MAFLON® repellents and surfactants are telomere-based (refer to MAFLON® Scientific Approach) and cannot therefore contain or produce PFOS, however trace levels of PFOA may result as minor impurities in the raw materials or as a byproduct of the LCPF - based products (C8 Lineplus series).
In 2006, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the USA and the eight major companies active in the fluorochemicals market launched the 2010/15 PFOA Stewardship Program.
According to this agreement, the companies committed to work towards eliminating the emissions and use of PFOA and related substances (LCPFCs) by 2015. As well as EPA also the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) considered in its analysis 2015 as the ultimate phase out deadline for direct use of PFOA and related compounds.
MAFLON® is fully involved in the LCPFCs (PFOA) substitution/elimination process. At the end of 2010 MAFLON® R&D team concluded the development of a new line of products based on shorter chain perfluorinated chemicals (C4-C6 HEXAFOR series).
They show similar or even better performance in comparison to those of LCPFCs (C8 Lineplus series) avoiding any possibility of PFOA release in the environment.
At present, although all the new R&D projects are focused on the new C6 HEXAFOR series, MAFLON® guarantees the delivery of its C8 Lineplus series onto the market until 2015.
