Furmanite Produces£Multi-million Savingsfor Esso
Here’s the scenario faced by Furmanite technicians. Esso’s Unit 1 boiler at Fawleywas shut down for repair. The Unit 2 boilerhad developed a superheater tube leak.The challenge was to carry out a repair;
the alternative was a shutdown of themajor processing units.
Full Steam Ahead
There was more bad news for SteveFenwick and his team. The primarysuperheater tube leak was directed in theworst possible place - in dead space 102ftabove ground level. Plus it was directing1690psi of steam onto an adjoining tube.
The Perfect Result
The solution was an erosion shieldinstalled by Furmanite’s Clive Peat whocrawled into this lethal confined space in
an air-cooled suit. After three days ofplanning and just two hours the processwas complete. The result?
The world’s first repair of this type to anon-line boiler. And a multi-million poundsaving for Esso.

Furmanite Innovation Adds Strength at ICI Billingham.
A routine de-lagging of the ICI MM8 plantat Billingham created yet another newchallenge for Furmanite. Severe internalerosion caused by sulphuric acid hadholed the outer shell and thinned thesurrounding area. The solution? Theinjection of a compound of PotassiumSilicate that solidified on contact withsulphuric acid.
Off line. On target.
The Furmanite team, working closely withICI, drilled, filled and tapped a series ofholes before seam welding a patch onto
the damaged area. Finally morecompound was injected into the voidbetween the shell and the patch to createa successful seal
