Competence focused on LEDsA new technology for dynamic light

Up-to-date technology and manufacturing

As a leading luminaire manufacturer, Zumtobel Staff

is investing heavily in the potential of innovative LED

technology. As well as carrying out intensive research

and development work, it has established a separate

ultra-modern high-performance production division for

manufacturing LED systems. Enthusiastic, highly pro-

fessional experts at workstations which are protected

against electrostatic discharge (ESD) use state-of-the-

art laboratory equipment to ensure the very highest

quality level.

Varied product range

As a result of this commitment, users can now benefit

from a perfected LED product line which is capable of

creating an extremely diverse range of lighting effects:

from static lighting points through to dynamically

changing colour scenes. The full potential of this tech-

nology still remains largely untapped. This explains why

Zumtobel Staff is determined to stay on the ball and to

turn the latest developments in LED technology into

innovative products which are opening up new horizons

for lighting design.

Fast delivery, flexibly preassembled units

Zumtobel Staff gives high priority to LED systems –

even as far as logistics are concerned. Deliveries are

correspondingly fast, and consignments are complete.

In addition, the well-thought-out modular design of

the LED luminaire components enables of delivery

customised, project-specific lighting solutions at short

notice.

Colour and dynamism

The functional strengths of LEDs include compactness, long service life, minimal maintenance, low energy consumption,

electronic controllability, low surface temperature, positional flexibility and variable angles of radiation. Zumtobel Staff

LED multicoloured luminaires add dynamic interplay of colours to these features.

RGB technology is the magic concept which makes these colour shows possible. RGB stands for the electronically

controlled interplay of red, green and blue LEDs which

is theoretically capable of generating 16.7 million

colour hues. This can be achieved not just statically

but also in an extremely wide range of dynamic sequences: suddenly like a moving wave of light, perceptibly changing

like a chameleon or almost imperceptibly changing, like changes in daylight. Intervals between changes can vary from

3 seconds to 3 hours. Different LED designs are used in the luminaires depending on the lighting system: wired radial

LEDs, SMD LEDs or LEDs which use chip-on-board technology.

5M U LT I C O L O U R E D L U M I N A I R E S LED multicoloured luminairesFascinating interplay of colours

Controlled colour sequences

Zumtobel Staff’s diverse multicoloured luminaire

product lines offer three levels of dynamic interplay

between light and colour:

LEDOS RGB

A preset programmed chip-controlled light-colour

sequence within 15 seconds.

PHAOS ANALOG

Lighting modules controlled via an analog BUS for a

coordinated light-colour show from various PHAOS

ANALOG systems.

PHAOS DIGITAL

The sophisticated solution – controlled over a digital

lighting management BUS, with plenty of scope for

designing complex, dynamic light-colour scenarios

using several PHAOS DIGITAL systems. The sequence

is programmed by using a lighting management input

unit, a touch-panel screen or a PC.

Note: Because of technical control incompatibilities,

products in the LEDOS RGB, PHAOS ANALOG and

PHAOS DIGITAL ranges cannot be used in combination

with each other. LEDOS RGB – synchronised by identical phase relation

The coloured light shows which can be produced using LED

multicoloured luminaires are truly eye-catching. It is not by chance

that their traditional applications include presentation and retail,

shops, showrooms and shop windows. Wherever there is a need

to attract the public’s attention, these luminaires are in their

element. Their effect is best exploited in restrained conventional

ambient lighting.

LED light showsThe magic of staging attractive settings

7L E D M U LT I C O L O U R E D L U M I N A I R E S

The real strengths of LED multicoloured luminaires come into play

in many application areas: as decorative architectural features, as

lighting accents and creating a sense of direction in museums and

art galleries, to set the mood in hotels, restaurants and bars, to

provide spiritual invigoration in health and therapy treatment areas,

or as a magnet to draw public attention to trade fair stands. This

comprehensive system portfolio offers a vast amount of creative

scope ranging from individual accent lighting through to large-scale

concepts.

The idea

The aim is to make a specific motor cycle model the centre of

attention in a dealer’s showroom.

The concept

Three XENO LED spotlights from the PHAOS ANALOG range are

spaced 1.20 m apart and directed towards the motor cycle. Each

luminaire produces light-colour sequences and sets the scene in

its own sector independently of the other two luminaires.

The effect

The dynamic colour changes in the way the three sectors are lit

alternately emphasise individual details of the motor cycle, and

the different material properties of its different components ensure

additional effects.

This catches the observer’s attention; colour and dynamism set

the stage for an exciting visual experience.

Even LEDOS RGB compact recessed lumi-

naires provide plenty of dynamism. They

contain a chip which delivers a fixed pro-

grammable colour sequence to run the de-

sired range of colours within 15 seconds with

gradual transitions between colours. These

luminaires are available in a square or a

round design, and are suitable for providing

accent lighting as well as guidance. Electrical

installation is straightforward and fast – the

luminaire is directly connected to the mains

supply. All luminaires connected to a par-

ticular line are clocked and synchronised via

the power-line frequency; the programmed

sequence is preset.

LEDOS RGB is suitable for a wide range

of uses. Its high degree of protection

(IP 67), high load-bearing capacity of up to

1,000 kg and suitability for installation in

concrete, brickwork or cavity walls means

that LEDOS RGB can be used outdoors as

well as indoors. Whether used as a single

luminaire or as a synchronised group of

luminaires – LEDOS RGB provides impressive

lighting and is therefore at home wherever

light is used to set the stage for rooms or

interior decor: in shops, hotels, restaurants,

bars, cinemas, theatres, etc.

Guide

Along access routes, in

prestigious circulation areas or

corridors, dynamic light-colour

shows produced by LEDOS

RGB lead people along the right

path and create a secure sense

of direction in areas which are

dark. This is all possible without

high energy consumption, with

little maintenance effort, and

provides plenty of scope for

attractively designed floors and

walls.

Embellish

With its lively colour changes,

LEDOS RGB brings vitality and

character to any room. Lighting

points become eye-catching

interior design features. Not just

in hotel suite bathrooms but

wherever there is a need to

create a sense of well being,

invite guests to linger or attract

attention.

mounting dimensions for maximum crea-

tive scope

Depending on requirements, the PHAOS

lighting tile LED ANALOG can, as a presen-

tation surface or illuminated wall with dy-

namically changing colours, set the stage

for itself or for a specific object. Its brightly

and evenly lit square surface spreads light;

the colours of the light can be changed over

the entire surface or be accentuated at the

press of a button. There are practically no

limits on the choice of colours, and the pace

and transition speed of colour changes are

always variable.

Technical details

• PHAOS lighting tiles LED ANALOG

measure 228 x 228 mm and can be used

as stand-alone units or, alternatively,

can be driven and programmed using an

analog BUS

Plenty of creative scopeLight as the link between stressand stress relief

The lighting tile is versatile, has a wide

range of possible applications and opens

up vast scope for creative design. The

PHAOS lighting tile LED ANALOG, like the

digital version, is mounted on beams, walls

or other surfaces or simply placed in a room

– on its own or with several others in a

group formation. Depending on the colour

program, it provides light which has a calm-

ing or stimulating effect. It can also be used

as an eye-catching feature in shops and

restaurant and catering areas.

Its design and technical options always

seem to inspire creative use. Individually

devised arrangements and colour shows

produce exhibits which, in counter and

reception halls, exude spectacular flair.

The user interface ensures programs are

easy to handle in any application.

Just like their digital counterparts, PHAOS

lighting tiles LED ANALOG are highly effec-

tive tools for setting the stage for objects in

a pleasing manner. In both sales spaces

and museums, glass objects produce an

impressive succession of colours and cap-

ture the spellbound observer’s attention.

Lighting tiles can act as a “presentation

platform” or serve as decorative items in

their own right. The option to determine

the best colour mix and appropriate pace

for a sequence as required ensures a high

level of flexibility.

17P H A O S A N A L O G W E L L N E S S

Just like the digital model, PHAOS lighting tiles LED ANALOG encourage interesting

design in areas such as wellness centres and medical treatment rooms. The effect of the

light they produce can be defined so that the lighting scene obtained encourages stress

relief and relaxation. They can be used to produce a simple, changing image which distracts

and calms patients in a waiting room, they can be an integral part of colour therapy, or an

interior design feature in a fitness gym – they have a large number of possible uses.

The X-joint lends the

spotlight its distinctive,

unmistakeable character.

The PHAOS XENO LED ANALOG spotlight

is easily programmed at the rear of the

unit or can be programmed via a separate

control unit (art. no. 60 810 440).

Technical details

• This striking design in titanium grey and black is the

work of internationally famous French designer Jean-

Michel Wilmotte

• Rugged design using aluminium and die-cast metal

as well as a durable controller made of high impact

resistant polycarbonate

• Luminaires can be rotated through 365º and pivoted

through 90º; this enables them to be positioned as

flexibly as possible

• The built-in SELV safety transformer ensures safe

operation

• Light-colour sequences can be programmed on the

actual luminaire when used as a stand-alone unit or

can be programmed via an analog BUS

• Wall- and ceiling-mounting are made easy by a

wall-mounting bracket

The possibility of dynamically spotlighting millions of colour shades with pre-programmed sequences and dissolve speeds makes

the XENO LED spotlight (created by designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte) the specialist in setting dramatic lighting stages. If the

stage setting changes, often a single key press is enough to change the colour sequence. The light produced has no IR or UV

components and exhibits can therefore be lit in a manner which meets the need for careful conservation.

PHAOS XENO LEDANALOG Putting the spotlighton colour changes

Please also refer to page 38 for further product details,

installation and mounting tips and specification text.

The XENO LED spotlight’s capabilities mean that it is inevitably

used for highly effective presentations in shops, museums, art

galleries and exhibition areas. It also creates exciting, richly

varied lighting scenes in foyers, bars, restaurants and many other

prestigious areas where it achieves maximum effect when used

in restrained ambient lighting.

Showing off products and brands in shops, and exhibits in art

galleries and museums highly effectively with dynamic light in

variable colours – like its digital “brother”, PHAOS XENO LED

ANALOG showcases objects in the right light in an innovative,

non-damaging manner.

PHAOS lighting tube LED ANALOGVaried colours all the way along the line

Guiding, accompanying or creating a background – the PHAOS

lighting tube LED ANALOG is designed for indirect light distribution

and can handle many tasks and accomplish them creatively

thanks to a selectively variable, wide variety of colours. Sometimes

concealed in coves, sometimes deliberately installed in a prominent

position, the emphasis is always clearly on the lighting tube’s effect.

Colours bring a room to life, regardless whether they change

randomly or colour changes are coordinated along the line of

lighting tubes. Shops, bars, restaurants and wellness areas are

transformed into visually rich landscapes. The lighting tube can

be rotated through 355º to ensure maximum flexibility in terms of

distribution position. Continuous lines of light over virtually un-

limited distances can be implemented straightforwardly without

significant installation effort.

Spectacular effects can be achieved by deploying linear waves

of colours controlled by lighting management systems.

The PHAOS ANALOG control unit is needed

in order to program the PHAOS lighting tube

LED ANALOG and PHAOS LINE, and is also

the perfect device for conveniently controlling

the PHAOS lighting tile LED ANALOG and

PHAOS XENO LED ANALOG.

23

sive effects and public attention

are guaranteed in shops, shop-

ping malls, hotels, cinemas,

museums and restaurants.

Two different lengths are availa-

ble to build continuous rows of

almost unlimited length which

can be configured as required.

Colour changes are possible

with an extremely wide variety of

compositions and sequences –

even waves of coloured light

running along the entire length

of the row – a wealth of possibi-

lities is waiting to be exploited.

Because of the materials used,

PHAOS LINE is a high-quality,

durable product: V4A special

steel, die-cast or extruded alu-

minium sections, and frosted

safety glass.

Because it can be flexibly sur-

face-mounted, PHAOS LINE can

be used to illuminate facades in

an uplight or downlight position.

It is equally suitable for use as

a continuous row system in out-

door areas or in damp locations.

The adjustable wall support

enables unevenness to be com-

pensated.

It can also be used to alter the

distribution of light. A straight-

line design and compact size

also ensure that it blends unob-

trusively into the overall archi-

tectural scheme.

PHAOS LINE LED ANALOG recessed luminaires

Ideal application areas for PHAOS LINE recessed luminaires

include prestigious circulation areas where they do an impressive

job of directing and guiding when embedded in the floor. By

producing uniformly illuminated surfaces, they make an equally

strong impression as decorative effective lighting in counters,

furniture or shop interiors. When used to light staircase steps,

they even make a valuable contribution towards safety.
