Shildon features on Channel 4’s Bank of Dave
Mr Charles Acriviadis talks to Dave Fishwick from the Bank of Dave about the closure of Shildon’s banks.
The closure of Shildon’s banks became the focus of the nation last week, when the story was covered on Channel 4’s The Bank of Dave. The programme follows Dave Fishwick, a self-made
Burnley Businessman who became so disillusioned with the nation’s banking system that he opened his own ‘bank’, with the aim of borrowing money to ‘the little guys’ and donating the proceeds to
charity.Dave visited Shildon for the show after hearing about the closure of every bank in the town. He was greeted by a group of councillors and residents who talked to him about how the closures have affected them, including Mayor of Shildon Brian Stoker and Councillor Peter Quinn. Dave says of Shildon, “I’ve been all over the country on this campaign, I’ve met lots of people, but here in Shildon they actually need a community bank.“Everybody knows everybody, everybody talks to everybody. They would be able to know who they could lend the money to and who they couldn’t lend the money to.“This would work very similar to the way it works in Burnley.”If you missed the show, you can watch it until the end of March by searching for The Bank of Dave, series 2, episode 1, at www.channel4.com/programmes/4od or on the 4od app.

Shildon’s Town Council meeting on Monday 11th March will note that, last month, Durham County Council approved a plan to build 287 dwelling homes and associated landscap-ing, including 3.9 hectares of community wildlife area, on land at Dale Road in Shildon. The plan for the develop-ment was submitted by Story Homes. Meantime, the County Council’s planning committee has also approved an applica-tion to build a mixture of two, three, four and fi ve bedroom properties at Redworth Road. This scheme will see 38 new homes built and the project will also include six houses under the Affordable Homes Programme, which aims to increase the supply of new affordable homes across the country.A number of previous ap-
plications for housing had been refused on the 1.37 hectare site, which was originally earmarked for industrial and business development. However, the planning committee meeting was told that there was a proven over supply of employment land in the area, and that there was also a requirement for housing. Concerns were raised about the welfare of bats that populate a nearby hedgerow, but principal planning offi cer Andrew Inch assured the committee they would be protected. The plan, which was submitted by Kenworth Ltd, was therefore approved. The Town Council’s meeting, from 6.30pm in the Council Chamber, is expected to rubber stamp the Dale Road project when it meets.

With almost 3,000 people unemployed and long-term youth unemployment at almost double the national average in the Bishop Auckland constituency, Helen Goodman MP has joined with Bishop Auckland College, local employers and local employment and training organisations to launch Bishop Auckland Jobs Fair.Running from 10am-2pm on Friday 15th March, the free event will bring together a wide range of local and national employment experts and trainers to help local job seekers to apply for jobs or apprenticeships and to get ready for job interviews.Bishop Auckland College, The Prince’s Trust, Dale & Valley Homes and Premier Inn, 2D, Territorial Army and a range of local employers and volunteer recruitment experts will be on hand throughout the day to help job-seekers to identify local vacancies, apprenticeships and work

Offi cial statistics show that just under 3,000 people are out of work in the area at the moment but I know that there are many who are getting by on savings or have been forced to move into lower paying or lower skilled jobs as the recession has hit.“We’ve got lots of talented people in the Bishop Auckland area, many of whom are struggling to fi nd a job at the moment. They’ve got the skills to do the work, they just need a helping hand fi nding the
right jobs or presenting themselves well in their CVs or at job interviews.“I’ve been astounded by the support from local people and organisations who are coming together to help tackle this issue. This event will be a great chance for people to get a leg up, so if you’re looking for work, want to move jobs or know someone else that does, please come along.“I am also pleased that our fabulous local Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans have agreed to open the Jobs Fair with a short sketch.”Camilla Race, Employment Services Manager at Bishop Auckland College said, “We are delighted to host the Jobs Fair at Bishop Auckland College. We have supported over one hundred apprentices into jobs since August last year and as a College we are committed to helping more people into jobs and to provide education and training.”

Graeme Thomas Richardson, of Laurel Court, Shildon, reported to the court at Newton Aycliffe shortly after 9.30am on Wednesday 27th February but when his case was called, he was no longer on the premises. Information was brought from outside the courtroom that security staff had
ejected him from the waiting area due to his in-appropriate language and that there had been some suggestion that he had been drinking. The 19 year-old faces charges relating to an incident in Shildon on 16th February, when it is alleged that he damaged two doors, of value unknown, and that
he had in his possession a kitchen knife in Mill Street. Magistrates gave Richardson the benefi t of the doubt and did not issue a warrant for his arrest but instead adjourned matters in his absence, extending his conditional bail until 13th March, when he will return before the court.

Shildon's sprints and jumps group ended their indoor season in fi ne style at Glasgow's state-of-the-art Emirates Arena, whilst contesting the Scottish National Indoor Champi-onships. A record number of athletes from Scotland, Ireland and England gathered to contest the event leading to a very high standard across all the events.Saturday's efforts were led by Rachel McHugh in the u20w jumps. Rachel's season opening efforts earned her a bronze medal in the long jump, which she upgraded to a silver in the triple jump. With the promise of even greater rewards to follow this summer, Rachel left the event in a content mood.Georgia Hirst came down in distance to test her speed for the outdoor season and fi nished third in the heats of the u18w 400m in 62.5s.Sunday saw an outstanding effort from Ciara Hughes in the u14 girls 60m. Ciara successfully negotiated the heats and semi fi nal to contest a
competitive 60m fi nal.Ciara stormed through in the last 30m of the fi nal to record a personal best performance and narrowly miss out on a medal in a very tight fi nish, ending the race in 4th position. Also in this age group, Jade Hepple put in some fi ne battling performances to record pb's in both the long jump and 60m events. Not to be outdone, Emily Gledhill contested the u16g events from the lower end of the age scale to come through the 60m heats and semi fi nal to take her place in what was to turn out to be a super fast fi nal.Emily went on to fi nish in a creditable 7th place and lowered her pb to 8.18s in the event.Far from fi nished Emily followed this up by making the semi fi nals of the 200m and recording another personal best performance in what was her debut, on a diffi cult to negotiate tight banked track.Shildon’s other competing athlete in this age group, Courtnie Mills, also recorded two fi ne personal best performances in the long jump and 200m.

Owens keeps Railwaymen’s Wembley dream alive
Shildon’s Wembley dreams were kept alive by a last gasp equaliser at Dean Street, where the Railwaymen faced stout resistance from Ascot United in the FA Vase Quarter-Final.The roar that celebrated Jamie Owens’s 92nd minute goal must have been heard across the entire town. This was a hard fought match on a heavy surface and Shildon quickly realised that Ascot would not be as easy a side to overcome as Brantham were in the previous round. But the home side didn’t help themselves when they conceded a sloppy goal on 34 minutes. A long ball forward by the towering centre back, Justin Clayton, was won in the air by Lee Boon, who continued his run into the space behind the back four before crossing to Rob Saunders, whose mistimed left foot shot from ten
yards was disastrously fumbled into his own net by Shildon keeper, Keith Finch. The lead allowed the visitors to close ranks and the second half was almost entirely played in the Ascot half, with the side from the uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division content to hit Shildon on the break.Twice the visitors could have ended Shildon’s dream but for last-ditch tackles by Robbie Briggs and Chris Hunter. But, in the end, and with time fast running out, the team’s never-say-die attitude was rewarded when Jamie Owens stretched to fl ick home Sam Garvie’s cross in the last seconds of normal time. The best chance of the extra-time period fell to Ascot with their last kick of the game. A free kick launched into the Shildon box caused confusion and up popped
the big defender, Clayton to blast the ball goalwards from four yards. It looked for all the world like the Railwaymen’s dream was about to be derailed but midfi elder, Robbie Briggs threw himself in front of the drive to save the tie. The sides will now replay on Saturday (9th March) at the Racecourse Ground in Ascot.Meanwhile, Shildon’s dreams of local silverware were ended on Monday night when Spennnymoor Town easily dispatched the severely depleted squad in the Durham Challenge Cup Semi-Final. Shildon, who could only name 13 fi t players, had to play the fi nal 35 minutes with ten men as more injuries affected the squad. In other club news, the winner of the £100 draw for February was ticket number 5, belonging to Les Chappell.
Jamie Owens wheels away in celebration as his 92nd minute goal rescues Shildon’s FA Vase quarter-fi nal tie at Dean Street. The sides will now replay this Saturday (9th March) in Ascot.
