The letter C can stand for the /k/ sound as in the word cat. C usually stands for the /k/ sound when it comes before a, o, or u. When letter C makes the /k/ sound it is sometimes called “the hard sound of C”.
Another sound of letter C is the /s/ sound as in city. C usually stands for the /s/ sound when it comes before the vowels e, i, or y. When letter C makes the /s/ sound it is sometimes called “the soft sound of C”.
