WOUND WISDOM
Sept 2016- Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Awareness Month
PAD develops when the arteries that supply oxygen rich blood to the internal organs, arms and legs
become completely or partially blocked as a result of plaque buildup
Symptoms can include: weak or absent pulses in the legs or feet, sores or wound on the toes, feet or
legs that heal slowly or not at all and a pale or bluish skin color
8-12 Million people are affected with PAD in the US
One in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 has PAD
The risk of limb loss due to PAD increases with age. People 65+ are 2-3 times more likely to un-
dergo amputation
Please call the UnityPoint Health Methodist (309-672-4582) or Proctor (309-689-6074) wound
centers if you have a wound that you suspect is a result of Peripheral Arterial Disease.
