CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Come to class EVERY DAY with all of your required materials
Homework completed Papers signed by parent or guardian Pencil or pen Science Binder filled with paper and 4
dividers Scissors, glue sticks and markers or

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Talk ONLY at appropriate times
Always RAISE your hand and WAIT to be acknowledged by the teacher.
Do not blurt out comments at any time.
Only one individual speaks at a time. Only students who raise their hands
and wait to be acknowledged will be recognized.
DISCIPLINE ISSUES
Students will receive only 1 (ONE)warning if they disrespect the classroom expectations.
Students who DO NOT respect the classroom expectations will begin a “Pink sheet.”
After three “pink sheet events” the student will be referred to the office.
TEN/TEN RESTROOM RULE
This class observes the ten/ten rule. Only one student out of the class at
a time. Students will NOT be excused to the
restroom during direct instruction. This includes power point presentations Video or Smart Board presentations Lectures/note taking activities
PENCIL SHARPENING
Please come to class with 2 (two) sharp pencils or mechanical pencils and extra lead.
If one pencil lead breaks, use the spare.
If both pencils break, you may sharpen your pencil during seat work time.
DO NOT SHARPEN YOUR PENCIL DURING DIRECT INSTRUCTION.
CHEWING GUM
Students are NOT permitted to chew gum according to the Newport News Public Schools Handbook.
Some teachers do not notice gum chewers.
In THIS CLASSROOM, if I see the gum, you will be asked to dispose of it.
THE WINDOW
Students are not permitted to open the window.
Generally this classroom is “cooler” than other rooms.
If you believe the classroom is too warm or too cold, the teacher will contact Mr. Pickett requesting a change.
(The heat and air conditioning levels are controlled downtown—not at this school.)
THE TEACHER’S TELEPHONE
The telephone on the corner of the teacher’s desk is
NOT for student use.
ABSENCES
If you are absent from school, you are still RESPONSIBLE for the lesson information. You must contact the teacher to ask for missing work.
The work must be returned to the teacher within 2 (TWO) days after receiving the Missing Work packet.
Absences of 3 or more days require an individual contract between the teacher and student.
EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES
Available at the discretion of the teacher.
Coupons may be awarded to students for EXEMPLARY or IMPROVED participation in class. Homework pass 4 additional points on a quiz 2 additional points on a test
YOUR DAILY HOMEWORK
Review your notes for the unit Study vocabulary IF you have access to a computer
check my website to revisit power points, video presentations, and occasional project assignments.
You will receive other homework assignments occasionally.
DO NOW ASSIGNMENT
Students will enter the classroom and begin the DO NOW assignment.
Students will write their first and last name, core number and date on their paper.
Students will WRITE THE PROMPT on their paper.
Students will respond to the prompt. The DO NOW is often used as a
grade.
NO NAME PAPERS
Always put your first and last name and Core number on the papers you turn in.
If an assignment does not have a name on it, the paper is not graded.
Students who are present in class but do not turn in an assignment, the grade is zero.
Students will have the opportunity to make up missing work, but there are time limits involved.
MORNING PROCEDURES
AFTER students have gone to their lockers, students will enter the classroom.
Students will NOT leave the classroom once they enter.
Students will speak quietly to one another until the bell rings.
After the bell rings students will stand for the pledge and moment of silence and listen to the announcements.
END OF CLASS PROCEDURES
Students will put the text books in the center of the table. (if they were used that class.)
Students will pick up any stray paper, pencils or personal belongings and put them in the appropriate place.
Students will push their chairs under the table and stand beside the table until they are dismissed.
END OF DAY PROCEDURES
Students will return to the homeroom class with their backpacks and belongings.
Students will be dismissed to Related Arts.
Students will return from Related Arts and enter the classroom QUIETLY.
Students will listen to the announcements and wait quietly for dismissal.
Students will stack their chairs before lining up to dismiss.
CLASSROOM JOBS
Students will have the opportunity to apply for a job in the Life Science Classroom.
Students will receive stock for performing their assigned job.
To hold a job in Life Science, the student must be in good standing. Passing Science No pink sheet warnings No referrals

ASK QUESTIONS
The teacher is NOT a mind reader.
If you do not understand a concept, ask a question or two or three.
Sometimes it take a few times to get your mind wrapped around
something new.
