Partnering toward a more autism accessible experience, MOSI and BCOTB announce groundbreaking collaboration
Tampa Bay’s leading experts in Autism Spectrum Disorder will guide MOSI in shaping its current campus and learning programs
o make fun and learning even more open to all
families in Tampa Bay, the area’s leader in hands-on science learning is teaming up with the community’s largest provider of Autism Spectrum Disorder analysis and care. The partnership between the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) and Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay (BCOTB) is the first of its kind for either organization. Working under the motto “partnering toward a more autism accessible experience,” the collaboration will lead to
more vital science and math education for a wider range of students in Tampa Bay, richer and more fulfilling time together for families that include children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and guidelines for other museums and businesses that are looking to create a more inclusive experience. “At MOSI, our core goal is to make science real for people of all ages and backgrounds. By partnering with BCOTB, we are taking that pledge further than ever before,” said MOSI President & CEO Molly
Demeulenaere. “Creating a more autism accessible experience means a fresh look at everything on our current campus – from the layout of our hands-on exhibits all the way back to how we let our guests know what to expect before they arrive.” BCOTB and MOSI have already performed a thorough assessment of the science center’s current 300,000 square foot facility on E. Fowler Ave. in Tampa. Some potential changes identified in the study include revising maps and signs to clearly show families what
T kinds of sensory information (lights, sounds, etc.) to expect in certain areas and rearranging some exhibits to allow families to bypass sections they may find overwhelming. MOSI’s new website, set to launch in September, will incorporate new features to improve autism accessibility. “This is a fantastic way to take the expertise BCOTB has developed and bring it out into the Tampa Bay community,” BCOTB President and Founder Kelley Prince said. We’re excited to help MOSI take that to the next level.”•

otarian Joyce Gunter, the fourth District 6890
Governor from the Rotary Club of New Tampa (RCNT) in only 20 years, made her official visit to her home club recently. Dr. Thomas Wade, Douglas Andrews, and Joyce’s husband, Gary Gunter, all preceded her as district
governors. Joyce and Gary are only the second DG couple ever to serve in District 6890.
District Governor Gunter told the club about some of her favorite experiences as a Rotarian and why she’s so passionate about Rotary. In
addition, she informed the club members about her goals for District 6890 for 2016 – 2017. “I am very excited about the Rotary Foundation celebrating its 100th birthday this Rotary year and am looking forward to attending the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, GA in June 2017 with all of my fellow Rotarians,” said Gunter. During her visit, she presented several awards to members of the RCNT. Derek Usman, who has been a member for less than a year, and Jim Dietz, a new member, each were given a “Rising Star” for their exemplary work in enhancing the club’s Greeter Program. “Shining Star” awards were given to:
1) Matt Palmer, for his superb work producing the weekly Club Bulletin; 2) Brad Page, for his continued dedication to the success of the Fisher House project. 3) Craig Miller, for being
an “idea man” and continually volunteering to assist with various club projects; and 4) Ann Wade, for her excellent work as the Rotary Club of New Tampa’s historian.•

We Are Purposeful Moms
With Summer ending and children heading back to school, August seemed like the perfect time to share the launch of PurposefulMoms.com. As sisters who were raised by a purposeful mom, and as women who want to be a blessing to our children and our families, the name “PurposefulMoms.com” came from a desire in each of our hearts to live with more intention and purpose in our daily lives. To be completely honest, the title we chose was a bit daunting at first. Would writing this blog give readers the impression that we were putting ourselves out there as “perfect” moms? Better moms? Moms who never made mistakes? Whoa, Buddy… Not at all. In fact, if that were the case, we would have shut it all down before ever launching into cyberspace. After all, motherhood is a journey not a destination. We’re continuously growing as moms, and something we’re encouraged by (and which we hope to convey) is the fact that 21st Century cellphone toting mamas, like you and I, can find simple and practical ways to break out beyond the mundane (or even “survival mode”), learning new ways to be purposeful and focused in the love and attention we give to our children. PurposefulMoms.com is all about sharing our journey as mothers, as we strive, with God’s help, to live in these more focused and intentional ways, and in the process use our stories, the lessons we’re learning, and the ideas we find helpful to encourage others along in their journey as well. Blog posts such as “Confessions of a Self-Diagnosed ADD Mom”, “Going Outside..On Purpose”, and “When in Barnes & Noble, Play with the Trains” are just a few of the posts you’ll read where you’ll truly begin to see the sincerity of our hearts as moms, realizing PurposefulMoms.com is all about us finding ways to be more intentional and focused in our everyday lives.
About the Purposeful Mom Bloggers Suzette, the oldest of the two sisters, prior to becoming a mom taught for 11 years at private Christian schools. She married her sweetheart in July 2004 and now has two children, a daughter (8 years old) and a son (4 years old). In addition to blogging, Suzette’s hobbies include reading, photography, and memory keeping. Faye, the younger of the two sisters, and a Wesley Chapel mom also had a career in education prior to beginning her journey into motherhood. She taught for a total of 10 years, teaching both at a Christian school and at a high performing charter school. In addition to blogging, she is also working as an online teacher of ESL students. In 2010, she married the love of her life, and together they have a precious little boy (who is 2 years old). In addition to blogging, Faye’s hobbies include photography and designing educational resources and clip art to sell via her two TeachersPayTeachers online shops: TheyCanLearnIt and ClipArtChuckleBerry.•

PETS
Scarlett (F) and Slade (M) are soft and sweet 5.5-month-old kittens who need a furrever home. Scarlett and Slade have tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). but they can still live very normal lives. Please see more information below about FIV. They were slowly introduced into a foster home with resident FIV+ and FIV- kitties living together. In typical kitten fashion, they love to play and even entice the resident adults into playing with them. Scarlett loves wet food and becomes extra affectionate in the morning before her morning treat! Scarlett is a black domestic medium hair kitty, and Slade has a unique brown and black tiger markings. When
Scarlett was spayed the fur grew back in gray where she was shaved. It is very adorable. Scarlett and Slade are bonded and need to
be adopted together.
Batali is an orange girl who loves her foster calico sister Shayla. They are both four months old. Batali happens to have tested FIV+ but Shayla has tested FIV-. Both are purr-machines! They are both in the process of being introduced to the general population of the foster home. Shayla is a high energy kitten while Batali is a bit more laid back, until something moves of course (like a foot). While these kittens know each other and get along well, it is not required
that they are adopted together. If you would like more information or would like to adopt either of these sweet pairs of kittens, please email us at adopt@
