Introduction
Listen, Little Man! Is a human and not a scientific document. It was written in the
summer of 1945 for the Archives of the Orgone Institute without the intention ofulishing it. It was the result of the inner storms and conflicts of a natural scientist
and h"sician who watched, over decade first naivel", then with ama#ement and
finall" with horror, what the Little Man in the street does to himself$ how he suffers
and reels, how he esteems his enemies and murders his friends$ how, wherever he
gains ower as a %reresentative of the & eole' he misuses this ower and ma(es it
into something more cruel than the ower which reviousl" he had to suffer at the
hands of individual sadists of the uer classes.
)his *)al(+ to the Little Man was the uiet answer to gossi and defamation. -or
decades, the emotional lague has tried again and again to (ill orgone research note
well/ not to rove it incorrect, ut to (ill it " defamation0. Orgone research carries a
ver" heav" resonsiilit" for human life and health. )he fact ustifies the ulication
of this %)al(' or a historical document. It seemed necessar" for the %man in the street'
to learn what goes on in a scientific wor(sho and also to learn what he loo(s li(e to
an e2erienced s"chiatrist. 3e must learn to (now realit", which alone can
counteract his disastrous craving for authorit". 3e must e told clearl" what
resonsiilit" he carries, whether he wor(s, loves, hates or gossis. 3e must learn
how he ecomes a -ascist, e it the lac( or red variet". 3e who fights for the
safeguarding of the living and the rotection of our children must needs e against the
red as well as the lac( -ascist. ot ecause toda" the red -ascist, li(e the lac(
-ascist efore him, has a murderous ideolog", ut ecause he turns livel" and health"children into criles, roots and moral idiots$ ecause with him, the state comes
efore right, the lie efore truth, war efore life$ ecause the child, and the
safeguarding of the living in the child, remains our onl" hoe. )here is onl" one
lo"alt" for the educator and h"sician/ that to the living in the child and the atient. If
this lo"alt" is strictl" adhered to, the great uestions of %foreign olitics' also find
their simle solution.
)his %)al(' does not iml" that one should ma(e it the attern of one's e2istence. It
descries storms in the emotional life of a roductive, ha" individual. It does not
want a, convince or win an"od". It ictures e2erience as a ainting ictures a
thunderstorm. )he reader is not as(ed to li(e it. 3e ma" read it or not. It does notcontain an" intentions or rogrammes. All it wants to do is to win for the researcher
and thin(er the right to ersonal reaction, which one has never denied, to the oet or
hilosoher. It is a rotest against the secret and unrecogni#ed intention of the
emotional lague to shoot its oison arrows at the hardwor(ing researcher, from a
safe amush. It shows what the emotional lague is, how it functions and retards
rogress. It also attests to the confidence in the tremendous unmined treasures, which
lie in the deth of human nature/ read" to e ut in the service of fulfilling human
hoes.
)he living, in its social and human interrelationshi, is naivel" (indl" and thus, under
revailing conditions, endangered. It assumes that the fellow human also follows thelaws of the living and is (indl", helful and giving. As long a. then is the emotional

lague, this natural asic attitude that of the health" child or the rimitive, ecomes
the greatest danger in the struggle for a rational order of life. -or the lague individual
also ascries to his fellow eings the characteristics of his own thin(ing and acting.
)he (indl" individual elieves that all eole are (indl" and act accordingl". )he
lague individual elieves that all eole lie, swindle, steal and crave ower. 6learl",
then, the living is at a disadvantage and in danger. 7here it gives to the lagueindividual it is suc(ed dr" and then derided or etra"ed$ and where it trusts it is
cheated.
)hat's the wa" it has alwa"s een. It is time for the living a, ecome hard when
hardness is needed in the struggle for its safeguarding and develoment$ in doing so,
it will not lose its (indness if it stic(s to the truth courageousl". )here is hoe in the
fact that, among millions of industrious, decent individuals then an alwa"s onl" ust a
few estilential individuals who cause murderous mischief " aealing to the dar(
nod dangerous imulses in the structure of the armored mass individual and lend them
to organi#ed olitical murder. )here is onl" one antidote to the germs of the emotional
lague in the mass individual/ his own feeling of living life. )he living dots not as(for ower ut for its roer role in human life. It is ased on the three illars of love,
wor( and (nowledge 3e who has to rotect the living against the emotional lague
has to lean to use the right to free seech as we eno" it in America at least as well for
the good as the emotional lague misuses it for the ad. 8ranted eual right in the
deression of oinion, the rational finall" must win out. )his is an imortant hoe.
