Preamble
Vidya Prasarak Mandal (VPM), Thane has started an engineering college in
deeply rural area with state of art infrastructure sprawling over thirty seven acres of
land. I t i s o n the ve rge o f b ecomin g one of the best colleges in India. The
college is located at Velneshwar near Guhagar, Ratnagiri in the Konkan region. This
region is chosen in particular because of its high literacy rate of 75%-80% which is
highest as compared to Indian literacy rate of 65.4%. Contrarily, gross enrollment
ratio of this region is only 8% to 10% which is well below national average of 12.4%.
As a part of VPM we are proudly announce hosting of “SRUJAN” (creativity)
on 20th
& 21st 2013 for 11
th & 12
th level Science Students to motivate them for higher
studies in the field of Science & Technology and develop the research culture in
students of rural area. The main goal behind organizing this competition is to change
the view of our education society from the examination oriented education to
application oriented education. In achieving this SRUJAN will definitively provide a
platform to innovative and creative students from urban as well as rural area. The
competition will mainly emphasize on science and technology and its applications in
our day to day life. With publication of this manual we VPM‟s MPCOE cordially
invite you to participate in SRUJAN.

2. List of Organized Events
The goal behind inclusion of following event in this competition is to provide
innovation and creativity platform for science students:
This competition is divided in three different section. Students of junior college can
participate in any event or all
Section-I
Scientific Model Making
In model making student are requested to work on small projects in
group/team of 3 to 4 students. Student can select any topics from Physics, Chemistry,
and Computer Science. As an example we suggest you following topics. The projects
based on innovative ideas are more than welcome.
Physics:
Project 1: Title: Electricity from Lemons (Lemon battery)
Details: It is a very interesting and easy project to perform. Take one or more lemons
and pierce the electrodes and connect them in series along with ammeter. Press
thoroughly lemons for making juice presence inside as the electrodes will be coming
in contact with the electrolyte. You can see the deflection in the ammeter.
Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemon_battery
Project 2: Title: Surface Tension Experiments
Details: Surface tension is one of water's most important properties. It is the reason
that water collects in drops, but it is also why water can travel up a plant stem, or get
to your cells through the smallest blood vessels. You can experiment with surface
tension using just a few household items.

project/a/1272/
Project3: Title: Calcium Chloride As A Natural Dehumidifier
Details: For this project you can explain how the Calcium Chloride absorbs water.
What is the physical process taking place? And how well do other salts (such as table
salt) absorb water from the air?

Mathematics
1. Investigate the history of pi and the many ways in which it can be approximated.
- They are many methods by which we can approximate value of pi. You can
discuss any one form it.
2. The Parabolic Reflector Microphone is used at sporting events when you want to
be able to hear one person in a noisy area. Investigate this; explaining the
mathematics behind what is happening.
- A parabola has a focal point. The Parabolic Reflector gathers sound waves (lots
and lots) and directs them toward the focal point where the microphone
collects/converts the sounds waves into electrical signals. You can explain
Mathematics behind it
3. Develop a model based on Linear Programming Problem, for Ration shop. So as
to minimize wastage / loss / corruption
- Collect a data of a village. Form a objective function and constraint to give an
optimal solution.
4. Ecological survey „DEVARAI‟
- You can collect data on different parameters. Apply Mathematical / Statistical
techniques to analyses it. Explain the applicability of mathematical / statistical
techniques.
Chemistry
1. Bio Diesel:
Principle: Based on one of the principle of green chemistry, “Use of Renewable
Feedstock”.
As we have limited stock of petroleum oils we must focus on use of Renewable
Feedstock to prepare bio fuels. We can use any vegetable oil (or waste oil by
removing contaminants) or animal oil to prepare biodiesel by transesterification
process.
2. Preparation of Potash Alum:
Principle: Principle of “recycle and reuse” of material is used here.
We can prepare potash alum from waste Aluminum metal pieces. Potash alum is used
in papermaking, in fire extinguishers in food stuffs and in purification of water. It can
be prepared by treating Aluminum metal with aqueous KOH and then with aqueous
H2SO4.
Similarly you can prepare any useful chemical from waste materials/chemicals.

3. Purification of water:
Principle: Use any principle of chemistry to make your water suitable for drinking.
Processes like distillation, ion exchange, adsorption, absorption, filtration, osmosis,
electrolysis, etc. can be use and you can suggest any better one or combinations of
processes to make your water pure for drinking purpose.
Computer Science
1. Design calculator program using ‘C programming language’
With use of computer editor application how to develop instructions to operate
calculator operations for daily mathematical calculations
Editor name: turbo C
Application name: calculator in C
2. Design calculator program using ‘visual basic programming language’
With use of visualization editor application how to develop a user interface based
calculator with set of options addition, subtraction, multiplication and division &
write instructions to operate calculator operations with effective graphical user
interface based mathematical calculator.
Editor name: visual studio 2008
Application name: GUI based calculator
Section -II
Quiz Competition

and 12th
science syllabus (Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics and biology). Main objective of this competition is to test the students‟ ability
towards concept and application of respective subject.
