Executive overview GDSN Major Release 3 is a scheduled update to
theexisting GDSN standard. The May 2016 update affects 36,000+
companies, countries and multiple industry sectorswith
GDSN-supported supply chains. MajorRelease 3 is not backward
compatible, sosignificant activity is underway to help all
partiesprepare and leverage all its benefits. The GDSN standards
are the protocols used to support real-time electronic sharing
ofstandardised and accurate information between trading partners
using the GDSN data pools. In October 2004 when GS1 launched its
(GS1 GDSN), there were only 74,000 GTINs shared among trading
partners in 13 countries in the Global Registry. Today, over 36,000
companies have made the GS1 GDSN a cornerstone of their supply
chain initiatives in more than 150 countries across multiple
industry sectors. More than 18,000,000 GTINs are now shared among
trading partners. GDSN was originally implemented in the Consumer
Packaged Goods [CPG] Retail sector but is applicable to many other
sectors in the Global Supply Chain. The changes in this Major
Release are expected to greatly improve the implementation time for
new sectors beyond this core GDSN sector. GDSN Major Release 3

Laboratories Abbott has been delivering the enabling power of
health for more than 125 years.
A key to that longevity and success has been a willingness and
commitment to adapt and respond quickly to changes in the world
around us. We do this by anticipating health and economic trends
and then advancing practices in medicine, science and business to
keep delivering new ways to have impact on peoples health around
the world. A Small Sampling of Abbott Products
Abbott operates in threeGS1 sectors: healthcare, food service and
retail/CPG. Abbott GDS Story Our GDS is called GDSN Solution. It was
designed and implementedbased on our understanding of GS1 Standards
and where the globalmarket was heading. Abbott has created a
centralized data hub for product data requiredby our external
trading partners; i.e. customers. Customers are hospitals, health
clinics, health systems, grouppurchasing organizations, etc. along
with the U.S. FDA andeventually other country regulatory bodies.
Our strategy is simple.Implement a single enterprise
solutionallowing for divisional flexibility that can meet or exceed
the needsof our global customers. Our efforts had its roots from a
separate master data management program. Our GDS efforts startedin

Information Brad J. Depke Director, GS1 Programs Global Standards
& Serialization Office T E Healthcare needs are growing and
changing around the world, and we work to stay ahead of those
trends and respond with relevant, localized solutions. Countries
like China, India, Russia and Brazil are growing rapidly, with a
rise in middle class households. With that growth is increasing
demand for healthcare. We are living longer, too. By 2050, 40% of
the worlds population will be over 50 years old. With increasing
lifespans, the incidence of chronic conditions like diabetes and
heart disease is also increasing. Countries like India will have
the youngest population in the world as soon as 2020. Innovations
in science and technology open the way to personalized medicine and
smarter prevention and treatment of chronic conditions like
diabetes and obesity. Consumers are taking a more active role in
their healthcare decisions and associated costs, while other payers
seek to control costs. By understanding the challenges, tastes,
customs, and environments that impact thehealth of people in each
market, we target uniquely local problems. Today, nearly 40% of our
business is from regions and countries of the world wherehealth
care needs are great and growing. Contact Information GS1 GDSN
