MALLO RAPID PROTRATOR
General
The Mallo Rapid Protractor (MRP) is a fire control instrument designed to aid the
Squad Leader or Fire Direction Center operator in plotting targets and computing firingdata. t consists of protractor and a range arm. This fire control instrument is a light
!eight" #er$ simple to operate" fast and accurate. t is easil$ adapted and suita%le to
use in the field under undesira%le atmospheric condition especiall$ for the maneu#er
unit.
Description of Mallo Rapid Protractor
a) Protractor
& is made of acr$lic plastic in a half circle form !ith a range armattach to the other side. The Range arm scale and deflection scale is engra#e in a clear
acr$lic plastic.& Deflection scale is engra#e at the outer side of the protractors arc
!hich is di#ided into equal parts" '*++ mils units of angular measurement. ,ne
graduation is '+ mils and la%eled in e#er$ '++ mils from '-++ mils to **++ mils. The
common (referred) deflection of this protractor is from '-++ mils to **++ mils. This is
the most practical Referred deflection used in la$ing the mortar or plotting in the plotting
%oard in the field.
b) Range arm& Rang arm Scale ('-/"+++ meters) is engra#e from the center of
the protractor (mortar position) out!ard and graduated in /+ meters and la%eled e#er$
'++ meters mortar position (#erte0) + to */ in hundred of meters.
c) Vertex
& 1erte0 is the point of origin or represent the mortar position
!hich the range start this point.

indi#idual squads directl$ control %$ the squad leaders. The squad leader o%ser#es thetarget area from the o%ser#ation post (,P) and control the fire %$ issuing fire commands
directl$ to the mortar cre!s %$ means of #oice or radio.

3hen enem$ is identified" the mortar cre! should %e in partial defilade. This
gi#es good protection from enem$ direct fire !eapon. The squad leader !ill
mo#e to ad#antage position and act as for!ard o%ser#er and computer for his
squad.
-Squad Leaders gi#es an order (%$ #oice or radio) 4Squad refer direct la$"engage enem$ camp direction '- ,5cloc6" range /++.

The gunner and assistant gunner !ill la$ the mortar to the target !hile ammo
%earers pro#ide securit$ for the squad. The gunner la$s the mortar for deflection
(7-++ mils) and ele#ation (''++ mils). Then announce 4 8988L:S 9P for
le#eled %u%%les" and ;9< 9P for gun is read$=

/Then he construct the emergenc$ firing chart on an$ flat surface suita%le to
accommodate the MRP and map pins.
The squad leader places the MRP at the center of the plotting surface.
? ,rient the MRP to the general direction as announce %$ the squad leader.
@Place a map pin in the #erte0 of the MRP. This pin represents the mortar
location.

3ithout mo#ing the MRP" esta%lish the deflection inde0 %$ placing the map pin
opposite to the graduation on the protractors arc that represents the
commonreferred deflection.

'- Mo#e the MRP to allo! the target grid rest to the plotting surface.
'7 Mo#e the MRP until the arm is against the pin mar6ing the target location.
'*2llo! the arro! (+&7-++ line) on the target grid so that it is parallel to the arm ofthe MRP. The head of the arro! should point a!a$ from the #erte0 of the MRP
along the ;un Target Line.
'/Place a pin opposite the target grid graduation corresponding to the Direction of
fire (Mounting 2Bimuth). This represents the north inde0 of the target grid.

Rotate the target grid until the announce ,%ser#er direction align to the north
inde0 pin. The target grid is no! properl$ oriented for the plotting of the
o%ser#ers correction" place additional map pin to fi0ed the target grid.
'?Plot the Left or and 2dd or Drop correction %$ measuring the num%er of squarefrom target location. :ach square on the target grid is equal to '++ meters and
can %e #isuall$ interpolated to the nearest '+ meters.

&' MRP & The Mallo Rapid Protractor is a fire control instrument designed to
aid the Squad Leader or Fire Direction Center operator in plotting targets and computing
firing data. t consists of protractor and range arm.
(' Target Grid & is a circular de#ice on !hich grid lines are printed. The
gridlines on the target grid the same as scale of the '-/"+++ firing chart" di#iding a
'"+++ meters square into '++&meters square. 2n 2Bimuth scale is printed around the
outer edge of the target grid. t is graduated in ' degree increments and num%ered
e#er$ / degrees. 2n 2rro! e0tends across the center of the target grid and used to
indicated the o%ser#er& target line. The target grid is la%eled Left or Right for lateral
correction. 2dd or Drop for range correction.
7. Grid #eet * is a plain sheet of paper or plastic (M$lar) on !hich equall$
spaced horiBontal and #erticals lines" called grid lines are printed ('- %$ '- squares).
The inter#als %et!een these grid lines !ill create '+++&meter grid squares on a scale of
'-/"+++. These scales pro#ide the %est compromise %et!een accurac$ and
con#enience.
*. Plotting Pins are used to mar6 inde0es and temporar$ position on the
firing chart. ,n a '-/"+++ scale chart" the thic6ness of the plotting pin shaft equals to
-+ meters.
/. Pencil is sharpen to a conical point and used to la%el and construct tic6
mar6s and to la%el deflection inde0.
Proced$re
Steps 2ction
'Choose a suita%le smooth surface on !hich the firing chart !ill %e constructedand place the grid sheet on this.
- Tape the opposite corner of the grid sheet do!n and ma6e sure that the tapedoes not co#er an$ grid lines.
7The grid sheet is num%ered to correspond to the map are of the Bone ofoperation in !hich the unit !ill %e operating. The first t!o digits representeasting and the second t!o digits represent the northing.
* Select the grid square at the center of the firing chart.

/Place a ;T2 on the firing unit location (Mortar psn) oriented to the grid north.Then insert a map pin" mar6 and la%el the mounting aBimuth (direction of fire)
on the outer edge of the ;T2
Remo#e the ;T2" insert a map pin in the #erte0 of the MRP and place on thefiring unit location" and slide the arm of the MRP against the mounting aBimuthinde0 pin.
?Place a pin opposite the deflection graduations of the MRP correspond to thecommon referred deflection. 2nd no! read$ to recei#e a call for fire.
