PRICES AND PENDING PRICE INCREASES This is the last time we will be able to offer works by Marc Chagall at
these prices due to the impact of the collapsing Australian dollar.

A celebration of Marc Chagall’s art By the 1950’s Marc Chagall was a well established and successful artist
attracting significant public and private commissions. In addition to his
paintings and stained glass windows, his mastery of the lithographic
medium was in demand for the creation of important illustrated fine art
deluxe books including the iconic Teriade production of Daphnis and Chloe
(which attracts prices of up to US$300,000).
Marc Chagall’s artistic career to that point was celebrated in the 1957 book
‘Chagall’ by esteemed French art writer Jacques Lassaigne. Fifteen original
lithographs were created by Chagall for specific inclusion in this book. We
are pleased to present this series of 15 lithographs, which are referenced
and individually illustrated in volume 2 of the catalogue raisonne of
Chagall’s lithographs (numbers 192‐207) edited by Andre Seurat and
published by Fernand Mourlot.
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia (now in Belarus), the oldest of
nine children in a close‐knit Jewish family. This period of his life, described
as happy though impoverished, appears in references throughout Chagall's
work. As an artist, Chagall took inspiration from Belarusian folk‐life, and
portrayed many Biblical themes reflecting his Jewish heritage. He took part
in the movements of the Paris art world which preceded World War I and
was thus involved with avant‐garde currents. However, his work always
found itself on the margins of these movements and emerging trends,
including Cubism and Fauvism.
Chagall became a French citizen in 1937, and after a sojourn in the United
States during World War II he returned to France in 1949, working in
Provence. In 1973, the Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall
(Chagall Museum) opened in Nice, France. Chagall died at the age of 97 in
Saint‐Paul de Vence, France.
