March 14, 2021 Fourth Sunday of Lent
March 14, 2021 2 SAINT BERNARD
Most of us do not take the time to think about our memories. We are most concerned with what is happening now. But it is helpful to look back on our life and see where we have come from. What has happened in the past shapes who we are today. Today’s Gospel reading invites us into the middle of a conversation Jesus is having with Nicodemus. In the previous verses, Nicodemus acknowledges that Jesus has been sent by God. Jesus tells him that in order to enter heaven, a person must be born of the Spirit and be from God. Nicodemus does not understand—the past, being born, has already happened. How can a person be born again? This is more than just repeating history; it is physically impossible. But Jesus explains in the passage we hear today. We have new life through our Baptism, which draws us into the life of God and makes us members of the Body of Christ. We are made new creations, cleansed of our sin and saved through the sacrifice of Christ. Throughout the history of the Israelites, God had promised to send a messiah, one who would save the people. God remained faithful to his promise and sent Jesus as the way of our salvation. We know that God is faithful to us. When we look back on our own lives, we see time and again how God has remained faithful, even when we might not have. The words of Jesus we hear in today’s Gospel reading remind us that God loves us. So much, in fact, that he sent his beloved son, Jesus, to save us. Jesus didn’t come to count our sins, but to love us and show us the way back to him. After all this time, after all this forgetting, God is still faithful. Lent is a time to remember when we have sinned, but also to see that through the lens of God’s faithfulness and love. Yes, we do not always live up to God’s great calling in our lives. The Gospel reminds us that people sometimes prefer darkness to the light. However, it is never too late to turn back to God. We can reflect on our past and move forward, into the light of God’s love.

Confirmation Candidates “Works of Mercy” This Lenten season, the 2021 Confirmation candidates of St. Bernard Church will be doing their “Works of Mercy” project in
support of the non-profit organization “Sole.” The organization consists of two NYC high school students who refurbish sneakers for homeless people in our city, including 18, 368 homeless
children. Many of their recipients do not have clean socks or even a pair of their own shoes. Through the kindness and creativity of these two high school students, 2416 pairs of refurbished sneakers have been
gifted to people in need since November of 2020. Please consider donating to our Confirmation candidates’ 2021 Works of Mercy fund, which directly supports our New York City community.
Help support the efforts of our Confirmation Candidates at the weekend
Masses with a minimal donation. March 13th- 5:00pm and March 14th- 8:30am, 10:00am & 11:30am
We are extremely Thankful to our Confirmation Candidate Families and our Parishioners for their donations last week. We collected over $2,000 so far.
That supplies sneakers and socks to 100 children in need.
A leaf has been added to our Tree of Life In Memory of
Antoinette Zarcone by St. Bernard & CFC Friends If you would like to add a leaf “In Memory of” or “In honor of” your loved ones,
forms are available in the church & rectory.
The Lenten Season provides a great opportunity for deepening our faith, hope and love through prayer, penitential practices and works of charity.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT I will be their God and they shall be my people.”- JEREMIAH 31:33
What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our family, our neighbors and for people we don’t know, just as God cares for each of us.
Join us every Wednesday, Friday at 8:30am and Sunday at 11:30am for live streaming of Mass on our
facebook page @stbernardrc, on our website at Saintbernardbrooklyn.com

The Diocese of Brooklyn is made up of people like you from 178
different parishes bonded together in the love of Christ. Part of being a responsible Catholic is looking after others, particularly those in need. As St. Paul says, “When one member suffers, we all
suffer. When one rejoices, we all rejoice.” That is why we have
the Annual Catholic Appeal. The goal at St. Bernard is
$57,669. Once we exceed our goal, we will then receive 100%
of all funds raised above this figure directly back to our
parish. For questions regarding the
Annual Catholic Appeal, or to schedule an appointment to
make a gift to the parish, please contact the Parish Office at
718-763-5533 Ext 15 WE ARE THE CHURCH,
TOGETHER
Q: What do the contributions from the Annual Catholic Appeal support?
A: Simply, PEOPLE. Our greatest
challenge as Catholics is to play our part in loving and serving our neighbor. So many of our brothers and sisters are in need, and we are blessed when we freely share our gifts with others with God’s Love, Compassion and Joy. The Annual Catholic Appeal is at the center of our efforts to put Jesus’ love to work. By making a pledge commitment, you make possible the work which go beyond any one parish alone; outreach to those in need through our diocesan social ministry programs; increase our Church's efforts in recruiting and training candidates for priesthood and religious life; Support Faith Formation; enable Catholic Charities to continue their multi-services in our community; support our retired priests; make chaplains available to hospitals, prisons and schools; and ensure that we are able to continue assisting the newest members of our community--immigrants.

♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet)
♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church.
♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people).
♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other.
♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctuary on ei-ther side of the altar and in the back of church by the dou-ble doors. You may put all your first and second collection envelopes and offerings in any of the baskets.
♦ There is not to be any gathering in the vestibule before or after Mass.
♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any questions or con-cerns.
♦ The Church will be sanitized twice a week, on Friday and Monday, before and after weekend Masses.
Receiving Communion ♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and consume the Eucharist and replace their mask.
♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distributed.
♦ Parishioners will come for Communion observing at least 6 feet of distance between them as they approach. The floor has markings on it.

If a parishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Communion line so they are the last ones receiving so that the Communion ministers can disinfect their hands if need be after each person receives.
