4-H Prepares Michigan’s Children and Youth for the Future
KALAMAZOOO TEENS AWARDED
$2,000 MSU PRE-COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
Local 4-H members, Laecey Foster, a 9th grader at Harper Creek High School and Ankit
Mehra, a 10th grader at Portage Central High School for the 2013-14 school year, have
both been awarded a $2,000 Michigan State University Pre-College Achievement Scholar-
ship. Students in 8th to 10th grades for 2013-14 who attended an MSU summer pre-college
program last year were eligible to apply for this award last fall. Laecey and Ankit
participated in MSU Extension 4-H Exploration Days, one of six pre-college programs
offered by MSU Extension 4-H Youth Development.
MSU pre-college programs are great for helping youth explore possible career interests.
They are great fun, very educational, and help connect young people with university
faculty and other resources. MSU pre-college programs also help youth envision their
future so they can wisely choose their high school classes and prepare for college.
Selection for this scholarship is based on academic ability and potential, demonstration of
extra-curricular and community service experience, demonstration of leadership and team-
work skills, ability to overcome obstacles, teacher and program director nominations and
strength of student essay. The scholarship is applied toward the student’s first year at MSU
as a degree-seeking student.
The pre-college programs annually offered by MSU Extension 4-H Youth Development
are: 4-H Capitol Experience, 4-H Renewable Energy Camp (formerly 4-H Discovery
Camp), 4-H Exploration Days, 4-H Great Lakes & Natural Resources Camp, 4-H Animal
& Veterinary Science Camp, and the Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council. For
more information on these 4-H pre-college programs as well as other MSU pre-college
programs, please visit Spartan Youth Programs at http://www.spartanyouth.msu.edu.
You'll find a multitude of programs that can help youth develop valuable skills, make
new friends and taste college life.

URBAN PROGRAM UPDATE
The new Northside 4-H Community Club is set to begin programming this summer at the Northside Association for
Community Development (NACD) in the heart of Kalamazoo’s Northside neighborhood. This group will be renovating
and utilizing the NACD’s own greenhouse and community garden to grow healthy produce for the Northside residents,
as well as participating in the many community service projects that operate out of the NACD. We are excited to wel-
come these new members and volunteers into the 4-H family, and look forward to seeing them at the Fair!
The Kazoo School 4-H Filmmaking/Photography SPIN club celebrated their final meeting by showing their movies and
photographs to Kazoo school students and staff on Feb 19th. Afterschool programming continues now with the Kazoo
School 4-H China Art Exchange program, which began meeting on Feb 24th. This group will get to learn about China’s
culture, listen to guest speakers talk about growing up in the Chinese Countryside, learn painting techniques from local
artists, and even show off their artistic skills to Chinese students! The art pieces to be sent to China will be chosen in
early April, and sent to China in mid-June.
Finally, two new programs are ready to be announced for this summer: The 4-H Bee Hotel project group, and the 4-H
Urban Gardening program.
The 4-H Bee Hotel project group will be building a manmade structure made of wood, stone, bamboo, and many other
natural materials, designed to provide refuge and shelter for wild bees. This project group is perfect for anyone interest-
ed in learning more about carpentry, environmentalism, ecology, or just looking for a good community service project
for their group.
The 4-H Urban Gardening Program will also be meeting bi-weekly throughout the summer to design, install, and utilize
garden spaces in the city of Kalamazoo. Sites that have been donated for use by the club include the Riverview Green-
house site, the WMU student garden, and some KPS-owned property near the 4-H office. For more information on this
or other 4-H Urban Programs, remember to check the 4-H website, Facebook, and Twitter.

STRYKE FORCE ROBOTICS CLUB
The 2014 build season for Stryke Force is nearing completion with our first FRC competition scheduled for March 7,
2014 and March 8, 2014 starting at 8:00 am at Gull Lake High School. The 2014 game is AERIAL ASSISTSM.
Here is a brief description taken from the FRC website:
AERIAL ASSISTSM is played by two competing Alliances of three robots each on a flat 25’ x 54’ foot field, straddled
by a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor. The objective is to score as many balls in goals as possible dur-
ing a two (2)-minute and 30-second match. The more Alliances score their ball in their goals, and the more they work
together to do it, the more points their Alliance receives.
For additional information about the game, please visit http://www.firstinmichigan.org/index.html. Stryke Force is also
scheduled to compete on March 21, 2014 and March 22, 2014 at Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus
Those who qualify for state will compete April 10, 2014 through April 12, 2014 in Ypsilanti at Eastern Michigan Uni-
versity. The World competition follows in St. Louis, MO starting April 23, 2014.
Stryke Force’s FTC members (middle school students) are going to their World Competition on April 2, 2014 in Iowa.
Sincerely,
Tammy Wasserman

POULTRY PROJECT
Believe it or not-spring is coming and its time to dust off the brooder equipment and get ready for turkey
poults and chicks. We have a county poultry meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 18th at 7pm in room B at
the fairgrounds where we will talk about getting those chicks off to a good start. The breed chicks from
McMurray Hatchery are due to arrive the last week of March-I'll give you a call when they come. You can still
put in your order for market chicks at the meeting (or call Ann Hollister at 685-2301). We have found out that
Townline Hatchery will no longer be supplying geese and after looking into other hatchery options, the price
for goslings is going to be around $12 each. Something to think about when planning.
Plan to come to the Poultry Palooza 4H state poultry show on Saturday, May 3rd. Its is going to be held at
the Eaton County Fairgrounds in Charlotte. The entry form and show catalog are available on line at
http://msue.anr.msu.edu/events/4_h_poultry_palooza. This year, there will be a bird auction to
benefit the 4 H project and a bird swap where you might buy that next winning bird. Any questions??? Call
