Hit man vs. Healer: implementing a Risk Assessment StrategyPresented by: John C. Kois, DMD, MSD

The fundamental rationale for a comprehensive treatment approach is a long-term strategy for dental health commensurate with an enhanced level of wellness for our patients. Understanding parameters of disease expression is sometimes confused because of misguided science or parameters that have led to patient adaptation. Formulating specific treatment needs based on an individual’s risk assessment has created new challenges for both the dentist and the patient. Until we have more objective data with better metrics, much of our clinical decision making will remain emotionally driven and empirical. This reliance, in turn, will make us more vulnerable to moral and ethical deliberations that are often confused with our inability to make a proper diagnosis. This program will reduce the confusion that has been created in our profession.

For example, our knowledge about occlusion has been based on gnathologic principles. These concepts are the basis of a mechanical system with focus on posterior determinants and mutual protection. If it is that simple, why can’t we predict when or why occlusal pathology develops or why can’t we always create a therapeutic occlusion?

Course objectives:Upon completion of the course, the attendees will learn:

• A systematic approach to treatment planning every patient in your practice.

• To focus on the four most important categories in order to minimize failures and maximize successful results.

• Biologic principles necessary for a functional occlusion.• New paradigms that enlighten participants about understanding

occlusal dysfunction.

About the presenterJohn C. Kois, DmD, mSD received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine and a Certificate in Periodontal Prosthodontics with an MSD Degree from the University of Washington, School of Dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics in Tacoma and Seattle and is an Affiliate Professor in the Graduate Restorative Program at the University of Washington. Dr. Kois continues to lecture nationally and internationally, is a reviewer for many journals and

is the Editor in Chief for The Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry. Dr. Kois is the recipient of the 2002 Saul Schluger Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from both the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is the past president of both the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, and a member of numerous other professional organizations. In addition, Dr. Kois continues to work with restorative dentists at the Kois Center, a didactic and clinical teaching program.

AM Presentation...

Stats, Facts, myths, and Downright Lies: Answering patients’ Questions About Their HealthPresented by: JoAnn R. Gurenlian, RDH, PhD

Are you ever caught off guard when patients ask you questions about their health? Ever wonder if what you are reading in the literature or hearing at scientific conferences is correct? Does some information sound too good to be true?

This course is an opportunity for us to review current health information and decipher it to determine what statements are true and which ones might be stretching the facts! We will discuss how to use current information in your practice setting to make oral health education and treatment relevant for your patients.

Course objectives:Upon completion of the course, the attendees will be able to:

• Discern fact from fiction in scientific presentations and literature.• Identify strategies to determine the extent to which information

presented at conferences and through published literature is true or false.• Reflect upon the value of dental hygiene and dental assisting

publications and continuing education programs.• Utilize information in health practice settings to provide current,

factual health education and treatment to your patients.

PM Presentation...

Diagnostic Devices for Detecting oral CancerIn the United States, approximately 40,000 new cases of oral cancer will develop this year and more than 7600 cancer deaths will occur. Oral cancer is more prevalent than cervical cancer and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. One American dies every hour from oral and pharyngeal cancers. Diagnosis of oral cancer is established twice as often at a later stage for the disease, resulting in a poor prognosis. The purpose of this course is to familiarize the oral health professional with various methods for detecting oral cancer. Advantages and uses of the head and neck examination, toluidine blue staining, exfoliative cytology, brush biopsy, ViziLite, VELscope, Identafi, salivary diagnostics, and surgical biopsy will be discussed.

Course objectives:Upon completion of the course, the attendees will be able to:

• Describe current clinical devices used to assess oral cancer risk in clinical practice.

• Discuss the benefits and limitations of using these devices for diagnosis and risk assessment in practice.

About the presenter: JoAnn R. Gurenlian, RDH, phD, has a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a master’s degree in dental hygiene from Columbia University, and a doctoral degree specializing in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. She is Professor and Graduate Program Director of the Department of Dental Hygiene at Idaho State. She is the President-Elect of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists and Past President of the American

Dental Hygienists Association. Dr. Gurenlian maintains a column entitled “Looking Ahead” in RDH Magazine, and is the co-author of a textbook, “Preventing Medical Emergencies.”
