It was described by the Evesham Township Library as a dog-a-bration when on the night of Dec. 29 dogs from Loving Paws, a localdog therapy group, visited the library to interact with families through reading. Two visitors who enjoyed the dogs were 4-year-old Lau-ryn Elkins and her 5-and-1/2-year-old brother Sam. With Lauren and Sam are Janice Wills Kingsbury and her 6-year-old ShetlandSheepdog and Collie mix named Lexi.

According to Brown, one of the

first projects the township finallyhopes to accomplish in the earlypart of 2015 is taking over respon-sibility for parts of Main Streetand Maple Avenue from Burling-ton County.

About six months ago, councilhad the township enter discus-sions with Burlington Countywith the goal of having the coun-

In the past, Brown has said tak-ing over responsibility for theroads would help with economicdevelopment, giving sole ap-proval of new projects along theroads to the Evesham TownshipPlanning Board alone, as well ashelp the township with planning

    seasonal, community-wide eventsalong Main Street.

Our goal for the new yearwould be to have full takeover ofMain and Maple, in the sectionsof which we outlined, in Janu-ary, Brown said.

Whether the township is givenfull control of Main and Maple inJanuary, Evesham will already beresponsible for plowing snow on

those, and all, county roads in thetownship in 2015 as a result of adeal made with the county lastyear.

No matter what, were goingto plow those, Brown said. Wehave that deal anyway. Weregoing to plow all of Main andMaple, and the county will reim-burse us for the areas of whichwe wont have ownership.

Moving into a little later in2015, Brown said the ongoing de-velopment of a redevelopmentplan for the vacant Tri-TownePlaza along Route 70 is goinggreat. In October, the township

and Tri-Towne owner RichardBirdoff, of New York-based RDManagement, publically an-nounced an agreement to redevel-op the 180,000 square feet ofempty buildings into a mixed-usecommercial and residential site, bringing new jobs, stores andmarket rate apartments to thesite.

Were now up to plan 32, 32nd

revision were at rightnowweve got to get a redevelop-ment plan done first, and thenhave Tri-Towne at a planningboard (meeting) in the first quar-ter of 2015, Brown said. Itsgoing great. Really, the coopera-tion is outstanding.

Brown also said another planfor the site is the creation of awalking path through the 150-footbuffer between the Tri-TownePlaza and Route 70, which thetownship has already received ap-proval for from the state Depart-ment of Transportation.

We did get approval for the

front from the DOT. We did get ap-proval on the easement, Brownsaid. Youre going to be able towalk from the other side of Ply-mouth Road where TD Bank is.Youre going to be able to walk viacrosswalks and the walking pathsfrom there all the way down toMain Street and 7-Eleven and be

Although school districts oper-ate on a yearly schedule similarto that of their students from Sep-tember to June, Evesham Town-ship School District still has sev-eral areas to look ahead to for thecalendar year of 2015.

According to Evesham Town-ship School District Superintend-

ent John Scavelli, one of the firstupcoming events for the districtwill be the presentation and adop-tion of a tentative 2015-2016 budg-et.

Our timeline is similar to theprevious years. Early in Febru-ary, we are looking to hold at leasttwo community meetings to pres-ent preliminary budgetary infor-mation, Scavelli said. At the endof February at the February

board meeting, Feb. 26, we shouldhave the tentative budget presen-tation and the board will meet toadopt the tentative budget.

Scavelli said if the timelinefrom the state Department of Ed-ucation remains similar to whatit has been in previous years, then in early May, the board willhold the public hearing and voteon the completed budget.

The 2014-2015 budget was set at

$75 million in total appropria-tions, with the average Eveshamhome assessed at $270,000 seeing ageneral fund tax levy increase of1.25 percent or 2.72 cents.

As for the potential outline ofthe upcoming budget, Scavellisaid the No. 1 thing he and the dis-trict would be looking at, as hesaid the district does with any un-dertaking, is to ensure everythingis sustainable.

Any initiatives we take on, wewant to ensure that they will belasting into the future, Scavellisaid.

Scavelli said the district alsowants to maintain reasonable ele-mentary class sizes, which hecalled important to the district, and the district will also work tomaintain and enhance the in-structional and educational pro-grams it already has.

In regard to Goals 2017 thedistricts six-year strategic align-ment plan that has mainly been ageneral set of directions for thedistrict from 2012-2017 Scavellisaid the continuing implementa-tion tasks are related to studentachievement, staff and profes-sional development and integra-tion of technology in the class-

    elcome to 2015! Another

year has come and gone, in

    seemingly speed-of-light

fashion. Out with the old, in with the

    new, as they say.

Last week, in our last issue of 2014,

we closed the door on the year with a

Year in Review. The end of a year is a chance for us

to reflect on all that has happened over

the last 12 months. It can be a sad time,

a happy time and a quizzical time all at

    once.

But the end also brings a new begin-

ning. With 2015 officially here, lets all

resolve to make our lives, to make the

lives of those around us, better. Lets be

a little more caring, a little more un-

    selfish, a little more polite.

Lets work harder and smarter, in-

    stead of longer.

Lets give a little more to those who

arent as fortunate as we are. Lets

learn from the mistakes of our past,

and make our future bigger and

    brighter.

Here at The Sun, we resolve to serve

the community even better than we

    have.

We resolve to be a better community

    business partner, be better reporters

and provide an even better product for

    our clients.

We resolve to improve the quality

and quantity of our content. We re-

solve to listen with open ears to yourthoughts, ideas and concerns.

To that end, wed love to hear from

you on how were doing, and what you

think we could be doing better. Please

share your thoughts via e-mail to

Help make our New Years resolu-

tions a reality by playing a part in

    your paper.

    room.With regard to technology for

the upcoming year, were lookingat replacing equipment and addi-tional software and supports fortechnology integration, as well asstaffing enchantments, Scavellisaid.

    Scavelli said another area of

Goals 2017 to be carried out wouldbe work toward the districts TierIII gifted and talent programs, mainly through program updatesand staffing, and work towardsummer programs for supple-mental literacy, specifically forsecond and third grade.

Another big event for the dis-trict in 2015 will be the first Part-nership for Assessment of Readi-

ness for College and Careers, or

PARCC test. The district participated in the

state pilot projects last year, andthe district has also upgradedbandwidth to prepare for thetests. The 2014-2015 school year isalso the first in which every stu-dent at the middle school levelhas access to a Chromebook, thelightweight laptop computer run-ning the Chrome operating sys-tem from Google, and in 2015, thestudents taking the PARCC test

will do so on those computers. In regard to questions about

PARCC that parents might have,Scavelli said the district is plan-ning parent nights, most likely inFebruary, to answer questionsand familiarize parents with thetest their children will be taking.

For children whose parents donot want them to take the actualtest, as has happened at other dis-

    tricts who participated in the

pilot program last year, Scavellisaid at this point, the plan is re-ally no different than anythingthe district has done in the past.

The biggest difference is thatthe children will take it on a com-puter, using a computer, so wewill address it the same way wehave done in the past if there arestudents who refuse to take thetest, Scavelli said. Were stilldiscussing those things and gath-ering information and getting

    ready for it ourselves.

safe the whole way. Its going to begreat.

Moving to another townshipproject, Brown spoke about Eve-shams work on the municipalowned and managed IndianSpring Golf Course, with councilrecently approving whats knownas the Municipal Partners Pro-

gram for the course, which allowsother townships to get their resi-dents discounts on rounds of golf

played at Indian Spring in ex-

change for promoting the courseon their township websites andsocial media pages.

With the township having beenin charge of managing the coursefor a full year, Brown called theimprovements there so far amaz-ing, and said 2015 would bringmore of the same.

Really, what we want to do isincrease outings. We absolutelyhave to increase outings, Brownsaid. Weve increased fees some,

but were also increasing ourcommunity partnerships withthe Municipal Partnership Pro-gram. These are our short-termgoals.

Moving from golf to baseballand softball, Brown said for thespring and summer of 2015, thesix-month-old Diamonds at Ar-rowhead Park sports complex al-ready has some tournaments

    scheduled, fulfilling Brown and

councils vision for the fields.Weve already got some bites

on tournaments for July and Au-gust, Brown said. We alreadyhave that. Were trying to comeup with a couple partnershipswith some food service groupsthat can help us bring somemoney in also. Its working outeven better than we thought itwas going to.

Reflecting on the townshipsplans for 2015 as a whole, Brown

said he was still very humbled bythe residents re-electing him inNovember, and he would do whathe said then and simply work tomake Evesham a better place tolive.

I always said I do everything Ican to make Evesham a betterand safer place to live, and 2015will only be a continuation uponthat.
