FIGURE / STUDYDrawings from the
Herbert F. Johnson
Museum of Art,
Cornell University
January 25 – February 2
Carlton Hobbs LLC
60 East 93rd Street
New York, NY 10128
The figural drawing has long served as a tool for both
students and seasoned artists for perfecting representation and
experimenting with the physical form. In their academic context,
these works from the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at
Cornell University serve as both art objects and as primary
research documents. This installation celebrating the ‘studious’
aspect of drawings will not only highlight the Johnson’s collection
of drawings from the sixteenth through twenty-first centuries,
but also elucidate some teaching contexts and conclusions
stemming from their study.

My first encounter with master drawings
as a graduate student found me speechless
before works by Rosso, Primaticcio, and
Cellini in the Uffizi, the Louvre, and the
British Museum. Ever since that introduction,
I have been continually astonished by the
outsized power and versatility of drawings –
the emergence of a breathing figure from
mere marks on paper; the revelation of
decision-making in a complex composition;
the daring of a high-stakes presentation
drawing calculated to snare a commission
or elicit a court invitation.
Giorgio Vasari, artist, thinker, and prescient
drawings collector, famously championed
disegno – drawing’s theoretical root – as
father to the arts of painting, sculpture, and

opens, my colleagues and I are proud to
present a selection of Cornell’s European
and American figural drawings from the
sixteenth through the twenty-first centuries
for this discerning audience. Among the
notable works in the exhibition is Cornell’s
double-sided sheet by Abraham Bloemaert, that
illustrates Vasari’s dichotomy of inspiration
and industry. On the recto, an unfinished,
ethereal Virgin Mary hovers, head bowed,
while on the verso, hand and leg studies await
activation by students – or by the master
himself. Rossetti’s drawing for The Blue Bower,
so different from the final painting, raises
questions about the nature of studies in an
artist’s process.
Our museum’s mandate to reach academic
disciplines beyond fine art and art history
requires a drawings collection to be able to
turn in many directions. The subject matter
of new acquisitions must evoke inquiry and
discussion, as students of literature ponder the
poetic motivation of art through interpretations
of Dante and Ariosto by Felice Giani or
Fragonard. A group of saints by Ciro Ferri
architecture. He characterized disegno as a
perfect idea envisioned in the mind and soul,
but one that can only be expressed by a trained
and practiced hand. We still seek this essential
balance of invention and manual skill in the
best drawings today. But Vasari also understood
drawing’s importance, not only for developing
a work of art from idea to execution, but
also as a tool for learning about the world
through the study of nature and of art, both
past and present.
To engage a range of students in the
university setting – and to train tomorrow’s
curators and connoisseurs – a collection of
drawings must accordingly express the artist’s
creative spark and model the material practice
of art. As Master Drawings New York 2019
squared for transfer to its place in the dome
frescoes of a grand baroque church spotlights
the intersection of art and architecture, and
engages engineers as well as students of art.
In a world that increasingly bombards us
with images, drawings stand as irreplaceable
records of personal expression, culture, and
history. Their intimacy calls for a measured
approach; every encounter offers the opportu-
nity for ‘slow looking’ and careful observation
crucial for honing critical thinking, regardless
of the beholder’s discipline or stage of life.
For all of these reasons, I look forward to this
week when, in the company of knowledgeable
dealers, collectors, and colleagues, I can
become a student again, looking long,
marveling at the manifestation of skill,
and seeking insight.
