1. Introduction Mastiff Ethernet Reader is Reindeer’s advanced RFID Reader with Ethernet connectivity.
As Ethernet infrastructure is ubiquitous in office, factory and ware house environments, this
reader can be easily connected to the existing intranet or Internet. The reader works at 865-867
MHz, which is a license free frequency band for RFID applications in India. The reader has a relay
which can be used for access control applications. The relay operates once the compatible tag is
read by the reader.
2. Product Overview
Figure 1 shows the Mastiff Ethernet Reader. As the name implies this device has Ethernet
communication capability.

To Power up the Mastiff Ethernet Reader, a Separate DC (12V) supply can be given through the
DC Jack provided. The block diagram of Mastiff Ethernet Reader has been shown in Figure 2.

The Block Diagram shows that Mastiff Ethernet Reader has a main Processor, which sends
the data to Web Server through Ethernet. Another Processor is dedicated for RF functionalities.
The RF processor sends the data to the main processor once the tag data is received. The Reader
Device will act as a HTTP Client and gets connected with the configured server. The server IP and
port number (in most of the cases for HTTP, it is 80) will be given through user configuration
utility to Ethernet Reader through USB port. This configuration information is stored in the non-
volatile memory. The Reader also has a Real Time Clock (RTC) with battery backup to keep date
and time. Periodically the tag data along with the date and time (the transaction data) are sent to
the TCP server. During the network disconnection, the tag transaction data are store in a non-
volatile memory. Once the reader gets connected to the TCP server, these transaction data stored
in non-volatile memory will be transferred to server.
An auto reset circuitry is included in the Ethernet Reader device to reset the device in case
of any software upsets either in main Processor or RF Processor. The auto reset circuitry
switches off the Power to the processors and its peripherals on any Software failures. The power
is switched ON which resembles the ‘Power On Reset’ for the processors. This device comes with
a unity gain Omni directional 865 MHz Antenna. The Mastiff Ethernet Reader has a Low Noise

Amplifier (LNA) which amplifies the received RF signals so that the tag to reader communication
range can be higher.
The various configuration parameters can be stored in the non-volatile memory, for
permanent storage. A mini-USB Port from the main controller is used to feed the configuration
data from the PC as well as to read the configuration data into the PC. The Configuration of Mastiff
Ethernet Reader has been explained in detail in section 6.
Mastiff Ethernet Reader has three bi-color LEDs. LEDs can glow either in red or green. One
LED (labelled as LAN) is used to indicate the Ethernet operation. The blinking of this LED for
every second indicates that the TCP/IP Stack is running correctly in the Ethernet Reader Device.
The middle LED (labelled as RF) is used to indicate the RF reception. The RF LED toggles when
the Mastiff Ethernet Reader receives the tag information. When the green LED blinks every 5
seconds it indicates the firmware is operating correctly. The third LED (labelled as PWR) is the
power LED which glows in red when the reader is powered ON. Relay operation is indicated by
the green glow of the power LED. As the red color LED already glows to indicate the power, the
power LED glows in yellow during the relay ON State. Ethernet circuitry supports 10/100 Mbps
connectivity.
Once the tag has been read, the relay operates and the relay’s common terminal will be
connected to NO (Normally Open) terminal. This connection (of Common and NO) will last for a
particular time period (Relay ON period) which is configurable. After this Relay ON period, Relay
Common terminal will be connected to NC terminal as the relay coil is no longer energized.

4. Mastiff Ethernet Reader – User Configuration
Mastiff Ethernet Reader comes with the option to configure few parameters by the user.
This user configuration options gives the flexibility of usage to the user.
Mastiff Ethernet Reader parameters can be configured by the user. Here in Ethernet
Reader, it is wired configuration which is done by connecting PC/Laptop to Reader through mini

USB cable. The Reader (USB Device) will be enumerated as a virtual COM port in the host. The
Mastiff Ethernet Reader configuration utility has been shown in Figure 3. The configuration
parameters for the Mastiff Ethernet Reader are Device ID, a unique alphanumeric ID to identify
the Reader, IP address of the server to which the Mastiff Ethernet Reader is going to
communicate, Port number at which the server is listening, RF baud rate, RF Channel and
sensitivity level at which the tags are transmitting its ID. In these parameters, RF baud rate and
RF channel in both Ethernet Reader and the tag has to match for the RF communication to
happen. RF baud rate and RF channel options are similar to that of Mastiff Tag. The Ethernet
Reader’s RF Reception Sensitivity Level has to be kept as high to increase the read range. Relay
ON Time parameter is used to fix the ON time for the relay. Server Update Interval is used to
configure the time interval between successive Ethernet Reader update (Periodic data) to server.
The user can click ‘Ctrl+D’ shortcut button to get default settings.

After opening the Reader configuration utility, the configuration parameters have to be
filled in and then the COM port corresponding to the Reader has to be chosen. The COM port is
selected from the drop-down list box labelled as ‘Serial Port’. The button ‘Write to Device’ will be
clicked once all the values are entered. The configuration parameters will be sent to the Ethernet
Reader once the button is clicked and the application waits for the acknowledgement from the
Mastiff Ethernet Reader. The application shows ‘Write to Device Successful’ message once the
acknowledgement has been received. Otherwise the application shows ‘Write to Device Not
Successful’ message. ‘Update RTC’ button is used to update the ‘Real Time Clock (RTC)’ inside the

device with the system time of the PC/Laptop so that the RTC will reconfigure it with the given
system Date and Time.
5. Mastiff Ethernet Reader to Server – Data Interface
5.1. Interface Description
The Mastiff™ Ethernet reader sends the data to the server through HTTP POST request.
Here the reader acts as a HTTP client and giving the connection request to server. To give the
connection request, the reader should have the IP address and port number in which the server is
listening. This info can be feed to the reader through user configuration as stated in section 4.
The device gets connected to the server once it is powered on. The successful connection to
server is indicated by steady Green glow of Ethernet LED. Though the device is connected to the
sever, it will send the data to the server only after the configured time interval (Server Update
Interval).
When the server connection is lost and if the device receives Active RFID tags, then the
packets will be stored in the Non Volatile Memory (NVM) in the device. The device can store up to
1300 tag records (tag ID along with the date and time at which it gets captured). Once the
connection is re-established, then the tag data in NVM will be transmitted to the server. The
device has an RTC battery so that the Mastiff Reader’s RTC keeps the time always even if the unit
is powered off.
5.2. HTTP Post Request Packet Format
The data format has been designed to ease the data retrieval and parsing of individual
fields at the server end. As the data is given as HTTP POST request, a simple form handling web
page can be used to get the individual fields. Each POST request packet has the place holders for
10 tag data. If the number of tags read within the ‘Server Update Interval’, are more than 10, then
the device will send tag data as multiple POST request packets. The data from the Non Volatile
Memory (NVM) also are given to the server as POST request packet at a time. So it can be handled
as multiple POST requests by web server.

6. Troubleshooting
This section gives some troubleshooting tips which help the users to diagnose and solve the
problem by themselves. These problems may creep in when the user goes to install the system.
This section gives the commonly encountered problems with Mastiff Tag and Mastiff Ethernet
Reader and gives the possible solutions.

dongle has been selected. This can be ensured by
right clicking ‘My Computer’ icon and selecting
Properties->Hardware->Device Manager->Ports.
Check whether the COM port number for ‘USB
Serial Port’ has been selected in the user
configuration option.
3. Show the magnet near to the center of the
Mastiff Tag as the reed switch is in the center.
4. Check the voltage for the battery and if it is
less than 2.5V, then change the battery and try
the configuration again.
2 My PC/laptop is not recognizing
the USB dongle when it’s
connected.
The USB dongle uses FT232 for USB connection.
If your system doesn’t have drivers for FTDI,
then that can be downloaded from the following
link: www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. The
Drivers are given in the CD also.

server to listen for the incoming connection,
then it is better to run generic TCP/IP utility
(like Hercules TCP/IP Utility) to check whether
it is the device problem or the application

4. Check whether the Reader’s Ethernet LED is
blinking for every 1 second. This indicates that
the Ethernet stack is running in the Reader.
P6. Mastiff Ethernet Reader misses out some
tags while sending the data to the Reader.
S6. Check Whether the Server Update Interval is
at least three times the tag transmission time
interval. This will ensure that the tag will be read
by the reader within the Server Update Interval.
Note: Decreasing the tag transmission time
interval will affect the battery life time.
