April 7-13, 2019
National Volunteer Week, brought to you by Points of Light, is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their community. Their stories can serve to inspire others to find ways to take action that creates change. During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the impact of volunteer service and the power of change makers to come together to tackle tough challenges, and build stronger, more vibrant communities. In recognition of National Volunteer Week, St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging would like to thank all of our program volunteers for their dedicated assistance to older adults. Each year, volunteers provide over 10,000 hours of support to Office for the Aging programs and services! We will be holding a reception to honor volunteers on Wednesday, April 10th. The reception is a small way for us to thank the amazing volunteers who help our programs each week! We could not serve as many seniors without this support! You can measure the strength of our communities by the strength of our volunteers! We appreciate everyone’s help and support. For more information on volunteer opportunities, please call (315) 386-4730.
Office for the Aging Advisory Council Meeting Monday, April 8th, is the next public meeting for Office for the Aging’s Advisory Council. The meeting will be held at the Human Services Building, 80 State Highway 310, Canton, (2nd Floor Conference Room) at 10 am.
The public is welcome and encouraged to attend!
The Advisory Council meets five times a year to review programs and services provided through Office for the Aging. The Council advocates for needs of older adults and helps assure the development of the continuum of care within communities. For more information, please call 315-386-4730.

Some Superfoods for Spring! By Betsy Stephens
Power up your diet There's a food movement afoot: Eating well to look, feel, and perform our very best is hot. And as Jamie Oliver and Michelle Obama alike are showing us, this isn't a matter of choking down foods because they're good for you. It's about filling your plate with delicious fare. "Food, if it's chosen well, can reshape our medical destinies for the better," says David Katz, MD, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center. It can also improve our mood, focus, energy, skin, and metabolism. Here's how to graze your way to a supercharged you. Walnuts / Mood Walnuts are packed with tryptophan, an amino acid your body needs to create the feel-great chemical serotonin. Asparagus / Mood These spears are one of the best veggie sources of folate, a B vitamin that could help keep you out of a slump. Spring Garlic / Weight Loss The slim-you benefit of this seasonal treat lies in a compound called allicin, which gives garlic its pungent smell. "Allicin may keep you from overeating by stimulating satiety in the brain," says Tara Gidus, RD, a dietitian in Orlando, Florida. Spring garlic has a milder, sweeter taste than the dried white bulbs you buy later in the season. Enjoy it diced on salad for a fat-fighting side or lunch.
Legumes / Weight Loss Beans are one of your best bets if you're trying to drop pounds, says Joseph Colella, MD, a bariatric surgeon at Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh. "Your body has to work to break down the bean to get through the fiber," he explains, "so you're actually expending energy to digest it." Even better, Dr. Colella says, the protein in legumes
activates an "I'm satisfied" message in the hunger center of your brain.
Spinach/ Energy These tasty leaves are a great source of iron (especially if you don't eat meat), which is a key component in red blood cells that fuel our muscles with oxygen for energy. Artichokes / Energy If you've been huffing and puffing up the stairs, try these spiky-leafed vegetables. They're loaded with magnesium, a mineral vital for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body—including generating energy, says Forrest Nielsen, PhD, a U.S. Department of Agriculture research nutritionist. "If you're not getting enough magnesium, your muscles have to work harder to react and you tire more quickly." About 68% of us aren't getting enough of this mineral. For women, the goal is 320 milligrams (mg) per day. One medium artichoke provides 77 mg of magnesium (and just 60 calories!). Other top sources include nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Blueberries / Memory Eat them regularly and you may reap big brain benefits. In a recent study, people with age-related memory decline who drank roughly two and a half cups of blueberry juice per day for 12 weeks (the equivalent of eating a cup of blueberries) made significant improvements on memory and learning tests compared with those who drank a placebo juice. The secret component? A type of antioxidant called anthocyanins, says study co-author Robert Krikorian, PhD, a psychologist at the University of Cincinnati: "Anthocyanins have been shown in animal studies to increase signals among brain cells and improve their resilience, enhancing learning and memory." Spaghetti With Asparagus and Lemon
All you need are noodles, olive oil, and asparagus with a squeeze of lemon to create this simple, tasty meal of Spaghetti with Asparagus and Lemon. Want to keep your noodles from sticking together? Make sure to salt your water, and remember to stir frequently while cooking. Ingredients: 1 (1-pound) box whole-wheat spaghetti, 1 lemon, 1 (1-pound) bunch asparagus ½ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese (divided), 1 TBS olive oil How to Make It:
Step 1
Cook pasta according to package directions in salted water; reserve 1/2 cup pasta water. While pasta cooks, grate zest from lemon and squeeze 2 tablespoons juice into a small dish. Trim asparagus; peel into ribbons with a vegetable peeler.
Step 2 Return pasta to pot; toss with asparagus, lemon zest and juice, 1/4 cup cheese, oil, 1/4 teaspoon each salt and freshly ground pepper, and enough pasta water to make a thin sauce. Divide among 4 bowls; top each with 1 tablespoon Parmesan.

April 18th 11:30 AM - 1 PM: “Death Cleanings”
Guest Speaker: Elizabeth (Bess) Kirnie Before you let the title scare you off, we promise this workshop is Not about death. Death Cleaning addresses the many aspects of contemporary life that makes us most anxious. For those who feel they have accumulated too much stuff and that all of that stuff is getting in the way of their spiritual development, Death Cleaning offers a practical guide to begin de-cluttering. This workshop is intended to help you de-clutter your life - both materially and spiritually - and ties into the bigger message concerning getting your affairs in order. (Based on the ideas in "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Life-time of Clutter” by Margareta Magnusson)
For more information on our Lunch and Learns or to register for a workshop, contact Samantha Jones at (315)265-3105 or [email protected]
