General PTA Meetings

and Proposed

Programs for School

Year

2nd Tuesday of the Month,

6:30pm (Months designated

in Bylaws)

A Note from the President

I can hardly believe this is the last month of school. It has been busy. The teachers worked hard to prepare the students for the STARR testing and for End-of-Course exams and our students have responded with hard work

and determination.

Let’s remember to thank our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6th through 10th. We have

such great teachers, please take the time to send a small note of appreciation.

PTA would like to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Brenda Cerroni. Starting the Monday of STARR testing could not have been easy but she jumped right in and has been a perfect fit. Welcome to the Den, Ms.

Cerroni!!!

Thank you to everyone who donated books and attended the NEISD book sale. It was another huge success.

Shannon Grona and her group of volunteers did a great job. The English department should get their check very

soon.

I would like to thank the 2012-2013 PTA Officers and PTA Board for their dedication this year. It has been a

pleasure to work with each one of you. The 2012-2013 PTA year ran incredibly smooth due to your

commitment and hard work.

I would like to congratulate and introduce the 2013-2014 PTA officers:

Monica Pipes, President;

Nancy Thomas, 1st VP;

Tanya Gill, 2nd VP;

Cindy Zagrzecki, Secretary;

Stephanie Nemec, Treasurer;

Sandy Aguilar, Historian;

Gwynda Williams, Parliamentarian.

There are still a few slots on the PTA Board that need to be filled. Look for an article regarding the positions in

this newsletter.

The 8th graders will have their end of year party at Time Warner Park on the last day of school. An article with

all the details can be found in the newsletter. Should be a lot of fun.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone that supported the PTA this year. I have been amazed at the number of volunteers needed for the many PTA programs and activities. I especially would like to thank those of you

who responded to those last minute requests for help. Thank you all for being so willing to work and for being

so very flexible.

Let’s finish the year strong,

Sylvia Theissen

PRINCIPAL SHELTON’S NOTES

Dear Parents:

STAAR testing is drawing to a close for the school year. We have had several parents helping us

monitor the halls during the exams. We are so fortunate to have the support you provide. Our results

from the 8th grade reading and math STAAR test were among the top in the district. We are very proud

of our students and are highly committed to work with those who were not successful the first time

around. We are in the process of contacting parents of students who need to retake the exam. Algebra

students will be taking their EOC exam on May 6. Our schedule for final exams is as follows:

Electives – May 24 and 28

English – May 29

Science – May 28 and 29 (6th and 7th grade will take a benchmark)

Social Studies and Math – May 30 and 31 (6th and 7th grade social studies will take a benchmark)

Reading – June 3 and 4

Other dates that you may be interested in include the awards ceremonies. Please keep in mind that the

celebration in middle school for 8th grade is not a graduation ceremony but an end of the year party on

June 6 at Time Warner Park for all 8th grade students.

June 5th- Ceremony for 8th graders who receive notification (Ceremony at Johnson at 6:30).

June 6th-Ceremony for 6th and 7th graders who receive notification.

Times for the 6th and 7th grade ceremony will be in the invitation.

The awards and recognition criteria can be found on the website.

All students will be celebrating a great year on April 25 at our Schools to Watch celebration. We are so

excited about our recognition and all appreciate the opportunity to be a T-Wolf.

We welcome our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Brenda Cerroni, who started with us on Monday, April

22. She is doing a fabulous job and will be a wonderful addition to our Pack!

In case you have not heard, Tejeda won the academic UIL for the district. We are so proud of our

students and the work that they do. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. They have had a great year.

Thanks for your support in the Try-Athlon and thanks to Susie Blucher for a very fun morning. I have to

admit my ears really got cold after the swim! It was fun seeing all the students.

We have had many successes this year and continue to find it a great joy to be a part of the Tejeda

Family. Whether it be academics, athletics, fine arts, club activity or our daily activities at Tejeda, we

have had a great year. Thanks to all who have participated. We are looking forward to our end of year

activities and look forward to seeing you in attendance.

Thank you,

Brenda Shelton

Teacher Appreciation Week

May 6-10, 2013

Teachers – the people who educate us and provide the vital knowledge

which we need to live our lives. They encourage, support, discipline and

prepare us for the road ahead and now it’s time for us to show them our

appreciation. Teacher Appreciation Week begins on the 6th until the

10th of May 2013, which will be the perfect opportunity for us to show

teachers how thankful we are for their support! Students, it’s time for

us to demonstrate how much our teachers mean to us, and say a big

THANK YOU to the people who work really hard so that we can have a

better future. Remember, it’s the thought that counts when it comes

to gifts! let’s make sure that we all celebrate Teacher Appreciation

week! Show your teacher how much he or she means to you and also

try to learn a little bit more about them. Take advantage of this great

opportunity to show your gratitude to your teacher!

Tejeda Dancers to Perform at Johnson

Our spring semester dance classes have been hard at work preparing Tejeda’s very own rendition of the “Barden Bellas” Finale performance from the popular movie, “Pitch Perfect!” On April 18th, 114 dancers auditioned for 55 spots to perform in Johnson High School’s spring dance show! All dancers who auditioned did an amazing job and deserve a huge “Congratulations!”

The show at Johnson is May 11th, at 3:00 and 7:00. Please come and support our Tejeda

Tejeda Middle School Hosts its 12th Annual History Faire

It was a free, family fun-filled Saturday at Tejeda Middle School as the highly anticipated History Faire and Culture Fest attracted over 3000 people for the 12th consecutive year. Open to parents, students and the community, the faire included hands-on activities, games, dancing, historical demonstrations, an archeological dig and tours of a Black Hawk helicopter. Numerous historical and cultural groups were also represented, including the Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers, Sons of the American Republic, WWI and WWII re-enactors and many more. Many student organizations sold refreshments, food and various items to benefit their school clubs or organizations. The event proved to be yet another success and plans for next year’s Tejeda History Faire and Culture Fest are already under way!

supporting the Book Fair and thank you to Mr. Green and the

fabulous PTA Volunteers who worked tirelessly all week to make

it happen!

WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative program of the National Center for Fathering focusing on the prevention of violence in our nation’s schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: 1) to provide an unobtrusive presence in the schools, and 2) to be a positive and active role-model for students at their school. WATCH D.O.G.S. was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR. WATCH D.O.G.S. serves to inspire and equip men to be the involved fathers, grandfathers and father-figures their students need.

For more information, visit the WATCH D.O.G.S. website at www.fathers.com/watchdogs.

A Reminder From Attendance

Please send a note with your student when he/she is absent. A

student has 2 days to turn in a Parent or Dr.’s. note to receive

credit for that absence.

Thank you!

Message from the Main Office by Marsha Stiles

The Tejeda main office would like to share a few procedural tips for making your

visits to our campus a pleasant experience. When the need arises, and your

presence is required at Tejeda, you will need to do the following:

1. No matter the reason for the visit, you are required to stop at the main office

first to sign in.

2. If you are only there to drop something off for your child, or to pick up a sick

child from the clinic, you must sign in at the main office counter and take the

yellow laminated pass found in the pocket of the sign in binder.

3. If you need to go anywhere else in the building, you will need to be signed in

through the Raptor system. Your driver's license is required for this

procedure. Once the license has been scanned during your first visit, you will

only need to tell us your name for any subsequent visits. However, you will

always need to show your DL to sign your student out at the clinic and/or the

attendance window.

4. It is extremely important that during the morning hours of 7:30-8:30

a.m. you understand that the front parking lot is closed for buses only.

The same applies to the afternoon pick up from 2:50-3:45 p.m. If you

arrive to pick up a student at 2:45 p.m. and park in the front parking lot,

please do not park anywhere in the circle drive. The middle section of the

parking lot is the recommended place to park. Parking in any other space may

result in your vehicle being blocked in by the school buses. Please also

be aware that if this happens, we are not allowed to ask the buses to move.

5. We will soon have a new Raptor system set up near the student drop off/pick

up area in the event you enter the building from the back parking lot during

the early morning times. Those badges will be printed from the ISS room/

C142.

Counselor’s Corner by Shawnda Christopher

Here is an excerpt from Parents Still Make a Difference. We hope

you enjoy!

“Tune in to Your Child’s Interests by Asking Good Questions”

Asking kids questions has many benefits. It shows children you care—you are

genuinely interested in them. It helps you tune in to your child’s needs. The

more you’re tuned in, the more your child will trust and respect you. Questions

can help you see if your teachings are taking root in your children. Asking

questions also models an important social skill—the art of verbal give and

take. So it’s good to have a supply of questions ready for asking. You can

make your own list starting with questions like these:

What class did you enjoy most at school today?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

How do you decide who your friends are?

Who are the two greatest people you know? What makes them great?

What would you do with a million dollars?

Page 16: May 2013 WolfTracks

Library Lost & Found

Moms, does your kid’s wardrobe seem limited these days? Are

they sitting on the front porch when you get home from work?

Are they taking their lunch in a paper bag instead of the lunch

box you purchased for them?

If so, they need to stop by the library lost and found to look

for their sweat shirts, sweaters, house keys and lunch boxes.

While they are there they can look for any winter coats,

prescription eye glasses, P.E. clothing, shoes and many other

assorted items they may have misplaced. There is a huge selection so please

encourage your child to take a look if they are missing anything.

Thank you to Heather Gaudette, library volunteer, for organizing all the items. All

unclaimed items are donated.

COOPERATE WITH THE PACK

Have you noticed the icon on the bottom left side of the Tejeda web page? “Cooperate

with the Pack” is another way to report bullying issues at Tejeda.

In addition to the Bully Box, located outside the library, students can now click on the

link, type in their issue or concern and press send.

The emails will be checked 3 times throughout the school day. Urgent issues or concerns

should be reported to proper authorities immediately or to campus administrators.

MONEY MATTERS As of November 1, 2004, North East ISD has established the following policy for accepting checks and collecting bad checks: For a check to be an acceptable form of payment,

it must include your current and accurate name, address,

telephone number, driver’s license number and state. In the event your check is returned for non-payment, the face value may be recovered electronically along with a state allowed recovery fee. In the event your check is returned for non-payment, checks will no longer be an acceptable form of payment for the remainder of the school year.

What’s Up with the Tejeda PALs?

Our Tejeda PAL students have had another very successful and busy

semester! In addition to our weekly visit with both 6th grade PALees here at

Tejeda, the PAL students have continued to mentor their PALees each

Wednesday at Encino Park Elementary. The PALs have also continued to

mentor our Tejeda ALE students every Thursday. They enjoyed a day together,

assisting our ALE students in the NEISD Special Olympics Track and Field

meet as well! Outside of the school day, our PAL students have been very

busy volunteering their time with special events such as: Cibolo Green

Wellness Fair and Walk, stuffing Easter eggs at the Encino Park Community

Center, hiding eggs and assisting with the Encino Park Easter egg hunt,

working at both nights of the Elementary PE Showcase, and running a very

successful booth at our own History Faire!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our AMAZING Tejeda

PALs on a wonderful year of service and dedication to our school! As always,

you will leave big shoes for the next group to fill! Love, Mrs. Kloza :0)

Red Cross and TAB are partnering up to raise money for those affected by the explosion in West, Texas. We are holding a Penny War. "In a penny war, two or more groups compete to win a fundraising competition. Each group has a bucket for collecting coins or dollar bills. The value of any pennies collected by a group count positively toward that group's point total, while the value of other coins or dollar bills are subtracted." The competition will be boys versus girls! Of course, we welcome teachers to participate. Students can add coins to the appropriate jar at lunch during the week of April 29-May 3. The idea is to add pennies to the jar of your gender, while adding higher monetary denominations (nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars) to your opponent's jar. Regardless of who wins the Penny War, the victims of West will benefit. The flyer on the next page explains the Penny War Rules. Please hang the flyer somewhere that your students will see it each day and remind them to participate in the "war."

Thank you for your support and prepare for "battle" Red Cross and TAB Sponsors

Tejeda Middle School Competes in Public Forum Debate

Public Forum debate can be seen in the Denzel Washington movie, The Great

Debaters. This type of debate is a team event that advocates or rejects a position

posed by the resolution. A central tenet of the debate is that the clash of ideas

must be communicated in a manner persuasive to a member of the American jury

or “citizen judge”. This year’s resolution is: The costs of a college education

outweigh the benefits.

Tejeda would like to commend the these students for participating in the Public

Forum debate competition that took place on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Bush

Middle School. Ms. Stroud, Debate coach, would like to express how very proud

she is of her “Great Debaters” and how much she has enjoyed having the

opportunity to work with these talented students.
