Ifyouareconsideringusingaconsultantexternaltoyourorganizationtointroducetype,considerthefollowingguidelines.(Inaddition,youmaywishtoreadthedetailedethicalguidelinesforadministeringtheMBTI®instrument.)

1. ThereisonlyoneMyers-BriggsTypeIndicator®personalityassessmenttool.Beforeusinganassessment,inquireaboutitsoriginsandaskifreliabilityandvaliditystudieshavebeendonesothatyouknowithasbeenproventomeasurewhatitsaysitdoes.

2. AllthosewhousetheIndicatorwitheitherindividualsorgroupsmustbeeligibleorcertifiedtopurchaseandusetheinstrument.Althoughsomepractitionersareeligiblethroughtheirgraduateeducation,theMBTI®CertificationProgramoffersin-depthknowledgeandunderstandingoftheuseoftheinstrument.

3. ThecoreconceptbehindtheMBTIinstrumentisthevalueofalltypesandtheimportanceofadiversityoftypesinanygroupendeavor.Oneofthepayoffsoflearningabouttypeisrealizingthatweareoftensurroundedbypeoplesimilartoourselvesandthusmisstheperspectivesofferedbyothers.Anypersonalitytyperesourceyouuseshouldclearlyrespectthevalueofdiversity.

4. ItisnotethicaltousetheMBTIinstrumentforhiringorfordecidingjobassignments.However,knowledgeoftypetheorymayhelppeoplerecognizewhytheymaybesatisfiedordissatisfiedwiththeirjobs,andknowledgeoftypealmostalwayshelpsteamsandco-workerscommunicatebetter.

5. AllMBTIadministratorsshouldbeveryclearthattakingtheIndicatorisvoluntaryandthatregardlessofscoredresults,respondentsarefreetochoosetheirownbest-fittype.IfsomeoneinyourorganizationdoesnotwanttotaketheIndicator,heorsheshouldstillbeencouragedtoattendtheprogram.Oftenapersonwilldecidetotaketheassessmentonceheorsheunderstandsitsapplicationsandisassuredofethicaluseintheircurrentenvironment.

6. AcoreethicoftheMBTIassessmentisthatresultsaregivenonlytotherespondent.Itisuptoeachindividualtosharehisorherresults.Theissueofconfidentialityistrickybecauseorganizationsmayfeeltheyarenotgettingfullvalueiftheycannotusetheresults.Oftenaconsultantcanrespectconfidentialitybutstillgivegroupprofilesorinformationinotherformsthatarehelpfultotheorganization.Ifindividualresultsarenotkeptconfidential,peoplemaynotbehonestandthebenefitsofusingtheassessmentwillnotbeeffective.

7. Regardlessofthepressuretokeeptrainingsessionsshort,personalitytypeismostbeneficialwhenthepractitionercanintroducetheconceptsandgiveparticipantsmeaningfulfeedbackwithinaminimumoffourhours.Ifpractitionersdonothaveenoughtime,theymayoffertolimitthesessiontoadiscussionoftypetheory,savingthefeedbackforanothertime.RememberthatfeedbackisarequirementofethicallyadministeringtheMBTIinstrument.
