941MEDICAL NEWS.—MEDICAL DIARY.

ROYAL DENTAL HOSPITAL OF LONDON.—A courseof eight post-graduate lectures will be delivered in theSchool of Dental Surgery at the hospital at 5 P.M., betweenNov. 19th and Jan. 23rd next. The lectures are open to

practitioners, advanced students, and others interested in thesubjects. Admission is free, without ticket.

INSTITUTE OF HYGIENE.—At the recent annualgeneral meeting of the Institute at 33-34, Devonshire-street,London, W., the following office-bearers were elected :Sir Thomas Oliver to be President, in succession to thelate Sir Malcolm Morris ; Prof. John W. H. Eyre to be aVice-President ; Dr. Soltau Fenwick, to be Chairman of theGeneral Council ; and Mr. Robert H. Elliot, F.R.C.S., tobe Vice-Chairman. Mr. Grant Ramsay, who founded theInstitute of Hygiene 21 years ago, retired as Principal ofthe Institute at the end of last month.

ROYAL SOUTHERN HOSPITAL, LIVERPOOL.-A seriesof rooms specially equipped for electro-therapeutic treatmentand massage have been added to the orthopsedic departmentof this hospital. These were formally declared open byLord Derby on Oct. 24th as part of the commemoration ofthe jubilee of the hospital. Special features of the depart-ment include the apparatus for remedial exercises, baths,and arrangements for ionic medication. It is also intendedto form a school for the training of students in electro-therapeutics and medical gymnastics.UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS.-Dr. F. S. Fowweather has

been appointed to the Lectureship in Chemical Pathologyrecently instituted. Dr. Fowweather graduated with first-class honours in chemistry (first division) at LiverpoolUniversity in 1914, gaining the Isaac Roberts scholarshipand the John Willox exhibition. After a year’s research hewas awarded the llLSc. degree, and he is also a Fellow of theInstitute of Chemistry. Later Dr. Fowweather took up thestudy of medicine and graduated M.B., Ch.B. at LiverpoolUniversity in 1922, subsequently obtaining the Diploma inPublic Health. He has been in general practice inEllesmere Port, and has had chemical experience in industry.CANCER RESEARCH PRIZE.—The committee of the

Christie Hospital, Manchester, offers a prize of 2300 forcancer research. Candidates must be qualified in medicineor in science cognate to medicine and must submit evidenceof original research work bearing on cancer done andprojected, which shall in the opinion of the assessors qualifyhim for the prize. The object of the prize is to supportresearch work already in progress. The assessors will takeinto consideration promising work which might fail forwant of financial help. The successful candidate will berequired to send results of his work in a report ready forpublication, or to give a lecture in Manchester. The prizewill be awarded in two instalments. The competition isopen to research workers of any nationality provided thatall documents are submitted in the English language.Applications must be sent to the Chairman of the MedicalBoard, Christie Hospital. Manchester, on or before Dec. 31st,1924. The decision of the assessors shall be final, and theyshall have power to divide or withhold the prize as theythink fit.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE IN ENGLAND AND WALESDURING THE WEEK ENDED OCT. 18TH, 1924.

Notifications.—The following cases of infectious diseasewere notified during the week, namely :—Small-pox, 80 ;scarlet fever, 2165 ; diphtheria, 1091 ; enteric fever, 104 ;pneumonia, 698 ; puerperal fever, 52 ; cerebro-spinal fever,5 ; acute poliomyelitis, 28 ; acute polio-encephalitis, 12 ;encephalitis lethargica, 43 ; continued- fever, 2 ; dysentery,2 ; ophthalmia neonatorum, 114. There were no cases ofcholera, plague, or typhus fever notified during the week.Nine of the 12 cases of acute polio-encephalitis were notifiedfrom Liverpool. The cases of small-pox were reported fromthe county of Chester, 1 (Dukinfield) ; Derbyshire, 12(Derby, 4 ; Bolsover, 1 ; Chesterfield, 2 ; ChesterfieldR.D., 3 ; Clowne, 2) ; Lancaster, 17 (Ashton-under-Lyne,11 ; Hurst, 6) ; Leicester, 7 (Melton Mowbray) ; Lincoln,16 (Gains borough) ; . Northumberland, 7 (Ashington) ;Notts, 3 (Mansfield, 2 ; Mansfield Woodhouse, 1) ; Warwick,5 (Nuneaton, 4 ; Meriden R.D., 1) ; Yorks N. Riding, 6(Middlesbrough, 5 ; Eston, 1) ; Yorks W. Riding, 6(Rotherham).Two corrections are made in the return ; the reported

totals for encephalitis lethargica and continued fever forthe week ended Oct. llth should have been 44 and 10 respec-tively. A case of typhus fever shown for the week endedOct. 4th should have been a case of enteric fever.Deaths.-In the aggregate of great towns, including London,

there were 9 deaths from enteric fever, none from small-pox,9 from scarlet fever, 29 from diphtheria, 13 from measles,34 from influenza. In London itself the diphtheria deathsnumbered 14 and the deaths from infantile diarrhoea fell to 21.

Henry Arthur Maggs, of Haworth, hon. anaesthetist, VictoriaHospital, Keighley, who died in his seventy-third yearon Oct. 19th in a private ward at the Keighley VictoriaHospital, had recently retired after practising medicinefor nearly a quarter of a century at Haworth and was wellknown throughout the Keighley district. A student atCharing Cross Hospital he qualified with the L.S.A. in 1892,and for a time was hon. medical officer at Pimlico-road FreeDispensary, London. At Haworth he took an active partin all branches of public life and was for 18 years a memberof the urban council. During the war he was honoraryradiographer, physician, and anaesthetist at the KeighleyWar Hospital. He leaves a widow and one son.
