MEET THE GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF... Head Coach Brett Petersen is in his 12th season as the head coach of the Gustavus men’s hockey team. Petersen entered the season with a 148-126-20 record in his 11 seasons at Gustavus. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice in his tenure, once in 2001-02 after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in 2009-10 after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC Title since 1993. Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in busi-ness administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State.

Petersen is assisted by Jared Phillips and Aaron Hoiland. Jared Phillips, a 2003 graduate of Gustavus, is in his third season as the full-time assistant coach with the men’s hockey program. Phillips, a Bemidji, Minnesota native was a two-year letterwinner for the Gustie hockey team as a goaltender from 2001 to 2003. He completed his master’s degree in applied kinesiology with an emphasis in sports management at the University of Minnesota in the summer of 2009. Jared also serves as the Athletic Department’s Compliance Coordinator.

Aaron Hoiland joins the Gustavus men’s hockey program for his sixth season as a volunteer assistant coach. Originally from Anoka, Hoiland is a 1992 graduate of Forest Lake High School. After grad-uating from St. Thomas, Hoiland earned his Master of Arts degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2003.

MEET THE HAMLINE COACHING STAFF… Scott Steffen, a 1997 graduate of Hamline University, returned to his alma mater as the head of the men’s hockey program in 2011-12. As the owner and head skating instructor of Steffen Elite Hockey Training Camps since 1998, he runs one of Minnesota’s largest hockey training camps. From 2001 through the 2010-11 season, Steffen was the head strength and conditioning coach for the prolific Hill-Murray High School boys’ hockey program. The Pioneers made seven MSHSL state tournament appearances – winning the championship in 2008 – while producing 17 NCAA Division I players and six NHL draft picks during that 11-year period. Steffen earned his bachelor’s degree in international business from Hamline in 1997.

Coach Steffen is assisted by Gordie Roberts, Tony Reineccius, Chad Rasmussen, and Sam Eccles.

hitting at 17-percent on the power play and killing penalties at a 74.7-percent rate.

Senior Beau Christian (Moorhead, Minn.) has been the man be-tween the pipes for 1075:37-minutes this season. Christian, who has recorded 48 career wins at Hamline, is 8-10-1 on the season. He has a 3.18 goals against average and a .903 save percentage.

AROUND THE GLOBE...The 2011-12 Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team features 22 players who previously played junior hockey on 14 different teams. Coach Brett Petersen’s squad features players from six states; Minnesota (19), California (2), Texas (1), New Hampshire (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), and three countries outside the U.S. in Canada, Norway, and Sweden.

LAST TIME OUT... The Gustavus men’s hockey team is coming off a three-point weekend at home against Concordia on Jan. 27-28. The Gusties skated to a 4-4 tie on Friday night before winning 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday night, the Gusties jumped out to a 4-0 lead heading into the third period on a pair of goals by Ross Ring-Jarvi and Zach May. The game proved that no lead is safe, as Concordia hit the back of the net four times in the third period to send the game to overtime and eventually come away with a 4-4 tie. Concordia completed the comeback on a Braden Rahman goal with just :36 seconds left play.

The Gusties came out looking to right the wrong of Friday night’s tie on Saturday. Instead of sitting back on their heels and playing not to lose like on Friday night, the Gusties kept the pressure on in the third period, holding on to a two-goal lead to win 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. Ring-Jarvi and Gustav Bengtson scored Gustavus’ goals in the contest. John McLean recorded his second shutout of the season in a complete-game, 24-save effort.

THE SERIES... This weekend’s series marks the 111th and 112th meetings between Gustavus and Hamline in men’s hockey. Gustavus holds the advantage in the all-time series with a mark of 91-18-1 for a winning percentage of .831.

Gustavus looks for redemption this weekend, as it was Hamline who knocked the Gusties out of the MIAC Playoffs last season. The Pipers cruised to a 3-0 victory, riding a hot Beau Christian who stopped all 36 Gustavus shots in the game.

The recent history between the two schools has been an exciting one over the past four seasons. With home-ice advantage not being a factor, its anyone’s game on any given weekend. The series is an even 5-5-0 since 2007.

RINGO LINE HAS BIG NIGHT... In Friday night’s 4-4 tie with Concordia, The “Ringo Line” of Ross Ring-Jarvi (2G, 1A), Zach May (2G, 1A), and Andy Pearson (2A) had its biggest game of the season, combining for eight points on the night.

BIG WEEKEND... With a short-handed game-winning goal in Satur-day’s 2-0 win, senior Ross-Ring Jarvi finished the weekend with four points on three goals and one assist. The Anoka, Minn. native now leads the team in points with 19 (8G, 11A), ranking seventh in the MIAC. Ross’s short-handed goal tonight is Gustavus’ second of the season and the fourth of his career.

GOALIES WATCH.. After a hard-fought trip back from a lower body injury, Gustavus netminder Tyler Venne was between the pipes for the first time since Dec. 18, 2011 on Friday night against the Cob-bers. Although he deserved better than a 4-4 tie, the sophomore went all 65-minutes, allowing four goals and making 29 saves. Venne is now 1-1-3 on the year.

John McLean recorded his second shutout of the season after stopping all 24 Cobber shots on Saturday. McLean earned the 10th win of his rookie campaign and is now 10-4-0 overall with a .927 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average. McLean is the first Gustavus freshman goalie to tally ten wins in a season since Peet Moseley did so his rookie year in 1997-98.

COACH P GUNS FOR 100... After earning his 150th career win earlier this season against Bethel on Nov. 11, head men’s hockey coach Brett Petersen is now looking to pick up career win “100” within MIAC play. Coach Petersen is currently 99-72-16 (.572) against conference opponents over his 12-year career at Gustavus. Legendary coach Don Roberts in the only Gustavus men’s hockey coach in the history of the program to reach this milestone.

SESQUICENTENNIAL WEEKEND... The Gustavus men’s hockey team hosted its Sesquicentennial Celebration on Saturday. The day began with the team’s annual alumni game that featured 28 former Gustie skaters who were put into teams based on whether they graduated in an even or odd year. The night concluded with a program held for all returning alumni, friends, and family in the Heritage Room of the Campus Center.

In a tribute to Don Roberts and the rich history of Gustavus men’s hockey, the team debuted a new alternate uniform in Saturday’s game The sweaters, which are primarily white with black numbers, alternating black and gold stripes, and Gusties written in cursive across the chest (see above), are replicas of those worn by the first MIAC Championship team in 1966.
