Gases in most stacks or ducts are often comprised of small amounts of volatile and potentially toxic compounds, in addition to the major gas components of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Most compounds, at parts per millions level, that have boiling points below water usually exist in a vapor state. Prior to collecting the gas in a sample container or collections vessel, a glass wool plug or filter is often used to screen out particulate matter from the gas stream.

XC-6000EPC mErCSamPlErThe automated XC-6000EPC MercSampler for Sorbent Trap Monitoring Systems is designed for continuous dual sampling of vapor-phase mercury emissions from stationary combustion sources, in accor-dance with the U.S. EPA Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR) published in CFR 40, Part 75, Appendix K, Part 63 PS-12B and to conform to new expected regulations. Performance Specification 12B: Specifications and Test Procedures for monitoring total vapor phase mercury emissions from stationary sources using a Sorbent Trap Monitoring System.
The purpose of performance specification 12B (PS 12B) is to evaluate the acceptability of sorbent trap monitoring systems used to monitor total vapor-phase mercury (Hg) emissions in stationary source flue gas streams. These monitoring systems involve continuous repetitive in-stack sampling using paired sorbent me-dia traps with periodic analysis of the time-integrated samples. Persons using PS 12B should have a thorough working knowledge of methods 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 30B in appendices A-1 through A-3 and A-8 to this Part 63.
Power generation utilities will be able to measure and obtain accurate and reliable mercury emissions data in order to determine emission levels and develop control strategies. Power generation utilities may choose from either Continuous Mercury Monitors or Sorbent Trap Monitors like the Apex XC-6000EPC for Mercury Emis-sions Monitoring.

XC-6000EPC MERCSAMPLERThe XC-6000EPC MercSampler meter console captures all data necessary for paired sorbent trap sampling according to Appendix K and Method 30B. The meter console controls the sample flow rate proportionally to the stack flow rate and determines the standardized volume extracted through each sorbent trap. To collect the samples, two diaphragm vacuum pumps which work with the proportional valves and mass flow sensors, pull the samples through sorbent traps. Paired samples are extracted from the flue gas for the desired time period, from several minutes to several days. There are optical encoders mounted inside the gas meters to provide digital data for the volume sampled. Samples are then analyzed to determine time-averaged emissions.

hg Calc Capabilites:Application used to import XC-6000 sample run data and trap analysis data to perform calculations for Appendix K. Sold separately.
The hgCalc Software uses sample run data and trap analysis. The sample run data from the MercSampler XC-6000 is imported into the application, where total mercury mass, hourly and total mercury emissions are calculated. The software insures the specifications in 40CFR, part 75 are met. The software will also verify QA/QC specifications regarding Section 2 breakthrough, relative deviation, and Section 3 spike recovery as shown in Appendix K, table K-1.
When all calculations are complete and data verified this can be exported currently in Excel, Comma Separated Values (CVS), Text/PDF format and will be available in an XML report format in the near future.

The heart of the Apex Instruments manual system is the XC-260 Source Sampler, a precision meter console used for collecting Hg emissions. The average mercury concen-tration for the sampling period is determined by using the sample volumes measured by the dry gas meters and the results of the sorbent trap analysis.
Two flow rate configurations are offered; 0.2 to 2.4 litersper minute or 100-1000 cubic centimeters per minute.

Appendix K Alloy C276 Probes
Appendix K and Method 30b Probes come in standard lengths of 4’, 6’ and 9’. Appendix K Probes are constructed from Alloy C276 for long-term use in extremely corrosive conditions. Type-K thermocouples are used to monitor, trap, stack and probe temperatures. Method 30b Probes come standard in stainless steel with Type-K thermocouples to monitor trap and stack temperatures. Both probes are designed for two 10 mm diameter traps (smaller trap adapters also available). The paired sorbent traps are inserted at the inlet end of the probe, using leak tight compression fittings before inserting directly into the flue gas stream.
The probe is heated to prevent any liquid condensation in the sorbent traps. An insulated, powder-coated aluminum probe head enclosure minimizes condensation at the junction between the probe and the heated umbilical/sample line.Accessories on next page.

VOST ANd METhOd 6 TYPE SOURCE SAMPLER CONSOLEThe MC623 Source Sampler Console (MC-623) is applicable for U.S. EPA Methods 4, 6, 11, 18, 26, VOST, and Methods 0030 and 0031. It can be used for any method requiring accurate volume measurement of low sample rates, typically 0.3 to 4 liters per min-ute. The console features a small lightweight dry gas meter fitted with an optical encoder and resetable digital volume totalizer. The internal diaphragm pump is corrosion resistant and rated for up to 6 liters per minute free flow. The gas meter temperature, and up to five remote temperatures, are measured with Type-K thermocou-ples and displayed with a digital temperature display (LED). Three digital temperature controllers are standard for accurately maintain-ing probe and filter temperatures and auxiliary heater temperature (when applicable). The source sampler console is housed in a sturdy lightweight vented aluminum cabinet featuring all stainless steel hardware and three carrying handles. The console is easily serviced by simply unlatching the front panel latches and sliding out the chassis, allowing full access to all components. Standard with all stainless steel fittings and quick connects.

MIdGET GLASSWARE & ACCESSORIES (METhOd 6)Midget glass impingers feature unground double O-Ring 24/40 taper joint and 12/5 O-Ring ball joints. Bottle capacity is 40ml. The Insulated Sample Tray with drain Valve (MSb-1) can hold a Midget Glassware Set (MGN-CGS) and two nontoxic Ice Packs (ICE-20). The ice packs allow quick turn around. At the end of the run simply remove the ice packs and drain the water before purging. Set includes impingers (plain and orifice), U-Tubes, Connectors and Clamps.

The Apex Instruments Method 6 and Method 26 Sampling Kits are normally used in conjunction with the XC-60 or Model 623 Source Sampler Console or alternative metering devices. The midget impingers
can be used for many methods, including NIOSh and OShA methods. The Method 6 Sampling Kit (SK-606) can be modified for U.S. EPA Method 26 with the addition of the SK-626 Kit.
