The Point DECEMBER 2013 COMPASSIONATE TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOLISM and DRUG DEPENDENCY
Message from Dr. Manuel Guantez, CEO
Health Care Reform—what does it mean for Addiction Treatment? The past few years have seen significant changes in addiction and mental health treatment,
but none so sweeping as the historic changes caused by President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA). Through the ACA, insurers are required to cover “essential health benefits” – including substance abuse and mental health treatment such as that offered at Turning Point.
Services such as screening, early intervention, treatment and recovery support for substance use disorders will be provided in the same approach as those that suffer from diabetes, asthma, or other illnesses under this health care reform. That treatment for substance abuse is recognized as “an essential health benefits” demonstrates an acceptance that addiction is a chronic, debilitating, potentially fatal and treatable illness and brings us one step closer to reducing the stigma associated with addiction and mental health disorders.
In the State of New Jersey, Governor Christie has demonstrated his commitment to helping those suffering from the disease of addiction by proposing to expand Medicaid eligibility for behavioral health services, includ-ing greater access to benefits such as medications and behavioral therapies in the treatment of addiction, but only on an outpatient basis. Residential treatment, including Turning Point’s detoxification and short-term resi-dential treatment programs, are not—and will not be—covered by Medicaid.
The impact of health care reform on Turning Point’s residential programs has been a shift from contract to fee-for-service funding, and at rates far below the cost to provide quality care. Turning Point is weathering this shift and continues to adapt in an ever-changing funding environment. The one constant in a very dynamic time has been the commitment and financial support of our many donors. Your continued support of our mission is more vital than ever before as we continue to provide the best possible service to our clients.
Thank you for supporting Turning Point in our mission to treat those suffering from the disease of addiction and to reduce the stigma associated with this disease.
Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Turning Point’s 12th Annual Gala “An Evening of Magic” Raised Nearly $200,000On September 24, Turning Point
held its 12th Annual Gala at The Grove in Cedar Grove, NJ. This year, the gala raised nearly $200,000 to help treat those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.
Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the evening’s honored celebrity guest, hosted a VIP cocktail hour for 50 people, who had a chance to talk, take pictures and received a signed Laker’s Jersey from Magic. An impromptu Live Auction, where court-side Laker’s
tickets and boxed seats for a Dodgers game were donated, raised an addi-tional $50,000 for Turning Point.
Turning Point also honored John J. Clancy, Founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Community Education Centers. Mr. Clancy spoke to the 300 guests about his 40+ years of experience in the field of addiction treatment. Mr. Clancy has received over 30 community awards including the 1999 Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award and
the 1999 “Award of the Nineties” from the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence and is an inductee in the Essex County Democratic Hall of Fame.
“The venue, our honored guests, the entertainment, the entire evening was truly memorable,” remarked Dr. Manuel Guantez, Chief Executive Officer of Turning Point. “We have a dedicated group of donors and are grateful for their support year after year.”

Turning Point Clients Attend 14th Annual Women
of Distinction Luncheon
On November 9, 2013, the women in Turning Point’s short-term residential treat-ment program attended the 14th Annual Women of Distinction Luncheon. This event is hosted by Promises Delivered and held at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. This outing is made possible through the generosity of Susan Turner, Vice President of Turning Point’s Board of Trustees, who purchased tickets for the clients and staff to attend the event. Susan was also one of the women honored by Promises Delivered this year. At the Luncheon our clients have the opportunity to hear messages of hope and inspira-tion as they continue their own path to recovery.
Turning Point Participates in the 3rd Annual Passaic County Recovery Walk
Wearing bright yellow t-shirts with “Join the Voices of Recovery” printed on them, Turning Point clients and staff participated in the 3rd Annual Passaic County Recovery Walk on Saturday September 7, 2013 at East Side Park in Paterson. Hundreds of people turned
out to support those in recovery and to celebrate National Recovery Month. A former Turning Point client stated he walked “to be part of the solution, not part of the problem”. Thank you to Turning Point staff for your participa-tion and dedication to your clients.
Turning Point Featured in New Documentary Series Over the past year, Turning Point has been working with Pain Alternatives, Solutions and Treatments (PAST), an
organization that helps former professional football players receive treatment for physical and mental health issues, including pain and addictions.
Turning Point was recently featured in the second of 10 episodes of a documentary entitled, Casualties of the Gridiron. The second episode of the documentary highlights Turning Point’s pivotal role in helping these players break free from their addiction to pain medications. States Jennifer Smith, PAST Director of Player Initiatives, “we have to check them into our partner rehab facility, Turning Point in New Jersey, before we can even begin the process of addressing the brain trauma. This is being positioned to [our client] as a safe environment for him to get off all his medications because it will make his brain better”
