It gives me great pleasure andcontentment to extend heartfelt greetings to thereaders of University Newsletter “Windows”,which I have been contemplating its come back,since I took position as Vice Chancellor in July2019. As we approach the New Year, KVASUaffirm its stride towards yet another era of newaccomplishments and commitments. The focusof faculty and students should be oriented

towards holistic development of livestock, poultry and allied areas ofanimal husbandry in realizing the needs of farmers, entrepreneurs andaddressing their problems. Faculty members are expected to follow andcreate new developments in the field, so their expertise and knowledge baseremain current. This focus in turn should place them as facilitators oflearning which would incorporate a broad set of goals for learners,particularly in veterinary professional field, the development of skill setsthat will enable our students to undertake career positions. The newsletterpresents briefly the news and reports of our recent achievements as well asthe activities of all stations and units under the University. We highlight thework by faculty members, student achievements, outreach, extension andentrepreneurship of our University, and I appreciate the team under Directorof Entrepreneurship for their cooperation and hard work in revival ofsubsequent issues of the newsletter.

Rare and challenging surgery done for
correcting vascular ring anomaly due to
persistent right aortic arch with left
ligamentum arteriosum in two puppies
Two puppies presented to the TeachingVeterinary Clinical Complex, Pookode were diagnosedwith vascular ring anomaly which resulted in theconstriction of oesophagus at the base of the heart, andsubsequent dilation of the oesophagus cranial to the
heart. Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA) with LeftLigamentum Arteriosum resulted in the vascular ringanomaly in both these puppies.A German Shepherd pup, presented from Kannurweighing six kgs was diagnosed of vascular ring anomaly.
A thoracotomy via the left 5 intercostal space wasperformed under inhalant anaesthesia and artificialventilation. The ligamentum arteriosum was identified,ligated, and cut to relieve the constriction of theoesophagus. The thoracic cavity with the size of just twofists was a challenge. The pup recovered and was activeand alert from the very next day.A similar case was presented; a French bulldog pup aged75 days weighing one kg with vascular ring anomaly.Open thoracic surgery was performed. The size of thepatient was challenging, first time the procedure beingperformed in the country for a small size pup.

Mannuthyon 27/06/2019. Mr.Jamsheertook his Diploma
in Dairy Science from KVASU. Starting with few cows
in an old cow shed,his hard work and dedication made
him a successful entrepreneur with around 25 milking
cows apart from other stock, goats and chicken.
Mr.Jamsheer P.C bagged the best Dairy farmer award
both at block and panchayat level. Mathrubhumi online

WORLD ZOONOSES DAY CELEBRATEDWorld Zoonoses Day was celebrated on 6th July,
2018 organized in association with Amrita Institute ofMedical Sciences, Cochin. The programme coordinatedby Dept of Veterinary Public Health, CVAS, Mannuthy,School of Zoonoses Public Health and Pathobiology(SZPHPB) and NSS Units of CVAS, Mannuthy, inassociation with AIMS was inaugurated by Dr. (Col.)Vishal Marwah, Principal AIMS. Dr. K. Vijayakumar,Professor and Head, Dept of Social and CommunityMedicine, AIMS delivered the welcome address. Dr.A.K.K. Unni, Professor and Head Dept. Central AnimalFacility, AIMS spoke on the importance of One Healthand exploring the possibility of AIMS and KVASU inworking together to control zoonotic diseases. Dr.Ganapathi Rao, General Physician, AIMS offered thefelicitations.Dr. K .Vrinda Menon gave an overview ofthe programme and Dr. Aswathy S., Professor AIMSproposed vote of thanks. FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATEDThe foundation day of College of Veterinary and AnimalSciences, Mannuthy was celebrated on 1st August, 2019to mark the 64th anniversary of this institution. Thefunction was arranged in the elegantly decoratedreception area of the college and was attended bystudents, teaching and non- teaching staff as well aslabourers. Dr. C. Latha Dean, welcomed the gathering. Aformal inauguration was done by Hon'ble Vicechancellor, KVASU, Dr. M.R Saseendranath, by lightingthe lamp along with senior teachers, Dr. C.B Devanad, Dr.Mammen J. Abraham and Dr. Usha PTA who were toretire within a year. In his address, Hon'ble Vice
Chancellor urged each and every segment of KVASUfamily to put in sincere and concerted efforts forimprovement of the University to serve the society in anexcellent way. Assam flood relief campaignAs part of the flood relief campaign for Assam essentialitems like packed baby food, sanitary napkins, babydiaper, first aid medicine, biscuits, rusk, tarpaulin sheet,torch, candles, match box, rice, salt, toothpaste, phenol,dettol, mosquito nets, mosquito coil, soap, dresses etc.collected from the students and staff was handed over tothe Goonj, a Non-Governmental organization. Anamount of Rs.9500/- was given to the Chief Minister'sRelief Fund,Assam account.
Hiroshima- Nagasaki Remembrance Daywas organized on August 7 , 2019 as a part of one yearlong Silver Jubilee celebrat ions of CDSTMannuthyDean, Dr.P.SudheerBabu, delivered thecommemoration speech. The documentary film on'bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and an Italianmovie "Life is beautiful" werescreened as part theprogramme.
