Internal analysis:VALUE PROPOSITION
TO CUSTOMERS
We thought that Apollo’s problem may be due both to external and internal factors:
Focusing firstly on external factors, we acknowledge the fact that Apollo had to face:
1. Alternating trends in movie consumption – at present the trend is decreasing
2. Rise of multiplex and megaplex with their new value proposition: good and complete level of services offered and wider variety of movie types

3. Niche positioning of essay movies. The “true”essay movies tend to differentiate their offer from multiplex mainly in terms of movie and services type. Apollo’s “partner” Anteo differentiates itself by offering a unique value proposition, not only confined to high value movie contents. In fact, it offers its customers the possibility to live the moment of cinema as an intimate experience. We actually think that there is a problem of cannibalisation between the two partners of Spazio Cinema.
4. Rise of home video and digital cinemas, both with new value propositions that tend to increase the level of benefits offered to customers (ex minimizing efforts or by improving quality). We believe they represent valid alternatives to the traditional stream of consumption. The home video is already well spread in Italy and is rising at an average 14% from 2001 (rent is increasing of 20% while sale increases of 15%). The digital movie market is still in its early stages in Italy but it is rising in the developed countries.

1.2 Dealing with the problem (2)
We think that this is definitely an issue. However, we did not have enough resources in terms of time and data to clearly deal with it. Our decision was to focus on the internal viewpoint and come out with some reasoning on Apollo’s repositioning.
We made a few considerations on Apollo’s current positioning. Considering a graph with price and perceived quality (overall bundle of benefits), Apollo passed from being in a middle position (M) between the offer (and target) of multiplex and “true” essay to being stuck in the middle (SM). This is an unstable position as Apollo’s offer is likely to be worstly perceived (without it even moving a feet)*.

Management choices
Looking at the problem from an internal viewpoint, the focus is on the management choices related to the value proposition of the cinema. Our hypothesis is that Apollo’s offer is MEAN on the great majority of the aspects, meaning that it is not actually (perceived as) different or unique:
• As already mentioned, Apollo positions itself in the middleof an imaginary space involving quality of offer and price/ effort required to customers.
• The solution offered to customers is an average one: customers can rely on common services such as online booking, loyalty card, cafeteria, restaurant and bistrot (this one is very small) but there is nothing really innovative or thought for a specific target.
In order to give Apollo some suggestions in order to improve its current position we suggest concentrating on customers because the deep knowledge of customers’needs may lead to a significant understanding of the origins of the problem. This then would allow us to reason on the main solutions to the problem.
IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING THE CUSTOMERS
In order to deal with this internal view of the problem, we need to clearly state the OBJECTIVES

Il campionamento
• Elementi introduttivi
Campionamento casuale semplice
Stratificato
A grappoli
A due o più stadi
Sistematico
A scelta ragionata
The implementation of a market research can be summed up in the following stages:
• business goals• target population• fieldwork• questionnaire set-up• sampling • basic treatment of collected data• data analysis• presentation of the results
Quantitative Market Research Set-up Protocol
Target population Target population definitiondefinition
• We plan to target Milanese inhabitants (Italian and foreign) from 18 to 60 years old
• We chose to focus on the geographical area rather than on the origin as the French concept is internationally appealing
• We personally foresee that our real target population will be the people between 25 and 55 years old but in order not to bias our study, we prefer to extend this scale from 18 to 60 years old
• We assume that aspirations and financial means evolve along life cycle, therefore our study is based on four different categories pertaining to four life stages:

Choice of sampleChoice of sample• Only 100 questionnaires because we are foreign
students and we are aware that our network is not as large as that of Italian students
• If the output of our project reveals a significant business opportunity, we recommend to carry out a new and wider-ranging market research in order to gain more accuracy and statistical relevance

Sampling
The major aspects that affect the choice of the sample size are the following:
• Cost of fieldwork
• Time of fieldwork
• Degree of accuracy of the estimates:– Variability of the character investigated in the targeted
population– Sampling error– Sampling Design– Choice of the estimator
Sampling - Sample size
Practical tips:
• Sample picked by a Customer Database with regard to customer profiling analysis: 50.000-200.000 sample units (consumer)
• Sample picked with regard to ad hoc surveys: 1.000-3.000 sample units (consumer)
• Sample picked with regard to repeated surveys (Panel): 4.000-9.000 sample units (consumer)
