METRIC MONSTER A fun, hands-on activity using:
metric measurements
conversion between millimeters and centimeters
creativity I have used this activity with fifth and sixth graders and they had lots of fun with it. They can make some pretty crazy monsters! While doing so, they practice in measuring in centimeters and millimeters. The finished products make silly classroom decorations. Use it at Halloween or anytime! Materials
1. one copy of instructions per student, with measurement grid and rubric on back 2. one copy of each of the measurement sheets (ears, eyes, nose, mouth, hair, head)
- copy each body part onto a different color paper for easy sorting (if possible) - cut each sheet into individual slips
3. six small containers for the slips, one per body part, for the students to draw their slips from
4. construction paper 5. scissors 6. rulers with metric measurements 7. glue or glue sticks
Teacher instructions Preparation
1. Photocopy back-to-back: a) student instructions and b) measurement grid/rubric (one per student).
2. Photocopy measurement sheets (one copy of each, on different colors of paper, if available).
3. Cut individual measurement slips (40 per body part). 4. Put measurement slips for one body part in a small container - basket, bag, cup, for
example. 5. Prepare classroom materials - construction paper, scissors, rulers, glue. 6. Make one (or more) sample monster head(s), labeling dimensions as per student
instructions.
© Mary Carr, 2012 www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mary-Carr
In class 1. Distribute instructions to students. Go over the instructions, show sample(s). 2. If necessary, review conversion between millimeters and centimeters. 3. Have each student randomly draw one measurement slip for each body part from
baskets (or bags, etc) - ears, eyes, nose, mouth, hair, and head. 4. Have students write their given measurements on the measurement grid on the back of
their instruction sheet. 5. Students turn in their monster heads along with their measurement grid/rubric. 6. Hang student creations in classroom, hallway, or wherever appropriate.
Notes
1. Only one dimension of each body part must have a measurement equal to the length on the student's slip for that part. For example, if the student's nose slip says 4 cm, then the nose can be any shape as long as one line segment through it is labeled and measures 4 cm. The exception is the head which must have two line segments that are labeled and measure the lengths given on the student's head slip.
2. The rubric is only a suggestion. You may change the point values, change the grading
criteria, or choose not to grade the project at all.
3. The materials included are for one class. If you will do this activity with multiple classes, adjust number of copies of student sheets and measurement sheets accordingly.
Alternately, the individual measurement slips can be collected from the class to be re-used with additional class(es), though they might not all be returned. If you will be collecting and re-using, it is really helpful to have the different body parts on different colored paper for easier sorting.

METRIC MONSTER
Instructions for creating your own one-of-a kind monster head
1. Obtain one slip of paper with measurements for each of the following parts: head hair nose eyes ears mouth
2. Record the measurements on the Measurement Grid on the back of this sheet.
3. For the mouth, eyes, ears, nose, and hair, there will be one metric length on each slip.
Using construction paper, cut out a shape that measures the given length in one of its dimensions (length, width, diameter, diagonal). Be creative. The body part can be any shape, as long as one of its dimensions matches the length given on the slip of paper. Lightly label that length on the body part.
4. The slip for the head will have two dimensions. Your head shape does not have to be a
perfect polygon. You may round the edges like the example, or somehow make the sides interesting. Again, use your imagination. Lightly label each of the two given lengths on the head.
5. Use different colored papers for the different parts for a more interesting and fun
creature.
6. Assemble all of the parts and glue together. If you would like to name your monster, feel free (school appropriate names only, please)
7. Your monster must have a head, hair, nose, two ears, and one or two eyes. If you
would like your monster to be one-eyed, that's fine.
8. Remember to label all of your required dimensions. Have fun! Example: Head: 13 cm x 100 mm Eye(s): 3 cm Ears: 5 cm Nose: 600 mm Mouth: 300 mm Hair: 17 cm
